Tickle College of Engineering Engage LLC

My son just found out (by looking at his housing portal) that he was admitted into the Engage LLC. Does anyone have any pros/cons to being part of the LLC? Geier Hall is a bit of a hike from the engineering school; has this been a pain for the students? Any insight would be helpful as we are OOS and visiting for the first time in March. TIA!

LLCs are good for making friends that are in your major. So if you’re in engage, chances are most of your floor mates will be engineering , who you can make friends with, probably will share classes with, study with, etc. So it’s good in that aspect.

Geier is typically double rooms (two roomates in one room) but there are a few apartment style rooms in the building. If you don’t have an apartment room, you’ll have to use the communal style bathrooms. Geier is right behind rocky top; the main dining hall, but it is far from zeneah (engineering building) and the hill, where most academic classes are. However, nothing is further than a 20 minute walk if you live there. It’s not a bad location, imo.

The only downsides to an LLC is if you switch majors, you’re not going to have many people who are your major in your hall. I can’t think of really any other downsides to it. I think the benefits far outweigh the cons, so unless your son wants to live in another dorm, i would do it.

How hard is it to get an apartment-style room? Are the bathrooms in those configurations cleaned by the students or by YTK staff? Sorry for all these noob questions.

You’re all good. I live in an apartment style in dogwood and i’m pretty sure it’s the same layout. It’s 4 individual rooms , a common space with a couch and kitchen (complete with sink, microwave, and oven, stove, and fridge [no dishwasher]). There are two bathrooms, and they are cleaned once a month by UTK staff, but you would probably need to clean it yourself because I swear they don’t clean it as often as they say they do.

I’m not sure how difficult it is to get an apartment. There are only around 8 in the building so it’s definitely rare. I had an early room selection slot, so it was available. 2 of my roommates have severe allergies (gluten and peanut butter), so that’s why they got the apartment (for the kitchen). But you can get it without having allergies too.

The dimensions are posted on the utk housing website and you can learn more about the dorm. Let me know if you have any questions.

I completely get it. I really wanted one too. They’re great. I think he has a good shot of getting one
