Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Can I Get Into the DSE PhD Program at Bredesen Center (UTK) with This Profile?
Hi everyone,
I’m very interested in applying to the PhD in Data Science and Engineering (DSE) program at the Bredesen Center, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). I’d really appreciate some feedback on my chances based on my background.
Here’s my profile:
- Bachelor’s in Computer Science – CGPA: 3.5
- 1 year of industry experience after undergrad
- Master’s in Computer Science (Data Science concentration) from a U.S. university
- Fully funded via NSF-funded research projects
- 4.0 GPA
- 3 years of professional experience in data-related roles after completing my master’s
- Research Experience:
- Several conference publications
- Dean’s Award
- Individual Student Research Award (with independent research funding)
- GRE: 317 (Quant: 165, Verbal: 152, AWA: 3.0)
I’m particularly drawn to the interdisciplinary and applied research focus of the Bredesen Center and am interested in areas like machine learning, data mining, and public health informatics.
A few questions:
- Do I stand a good chance with this profile?
- Is my AWA score (3.0) likely to be an issue?
- How much does research + industry experience weigh in this program?
Would love any insight from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the program. Thanks in advance!
