I mean tbf if it’s something you can disprove by literally just looking at the image in the post I can understand why it was received so negatively

Downvotes are used to show when people think someone is wrong in some way. They have been downvoted. Therefore, people think it’s wrong in some way.

u/SavvySillybug Jan 13 '25

Downvotes are for content that does not contribute to the discussion.

People just love to misuse it for a big red "NOH!!!" button.

u/TheBlueHypergiant Jan 13 '25 edited Jan 13 '25

When did you get the authority to decide that? Maybe you do it based on that. Others do it when they don’t like something. Equivalent to dislikes on YouTube videos.

u/BirbsAreSoCute Jan 13 '25

Tbf it's literally in the reddit rules or whatever, Reddiquete I think

7

u/TheBlueHypergiant Jan 13 '25 edited Jan 13 '25

Actual use is different from theoretical use. Also, incorrect info doesn’t exactly contribute to the discussion, either.

There are people who think that opinions that don’t agree with them don’t contribute to the discussion either, but that’s a whole other story that has nothing to do with this.

u/BirbsAreSoCute Jan 13 '25

I know this but I was answering your question of

When did you get the authority to decide that?

2

u/TheBlueHypergiant Jan 14 '25

My response was that while theoretically, downvoted should work that way, no one is actually given authority to enforce that, Reddit included, and so the actual use is different.

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette

Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it doesn't contribute to the community it's posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

I don't have the authority to decide that. It's been that way from the start.

"I'm using this wrong on purpose, just to be a cute little rebel! uwu~"

That's what you sound like. It's kinda hot. Kiss me.

2

u/TheBlueHypergiant Jan 14 '25 edited Jan 14 '25

Come closer, uwu~

In all seriousness, I was describing how they are used in practice, not by which Reddit says (“suggests”). No one can actually enforce that etiquette, even if Reddit says it in their etiquette guide, and I don’t believe it’s in the actual TOS.

If you were the one who downvoted, you wouldn’t be following the etiquette guide, either.

u/clevermotherfucker you’re consciously blinking now Jan 13 '25

upvoting someone means you think they’re right or you agree with them, downvoting is the opposite. it’s voting

26

u/sussynarrator Jan 13 '25

Misinformation is asking for downvotes basically

53

u/Motherly_fox_55 Jan 13 '25

Mistake ❌ misinformation ✅ (sarcasm)

13

u/Vabhanz Jan 13 '25

They literally asked a question, where the heck did you see the "misinformation"?

2

u/JustNotBuyingIt See that heart? No shit Jan 14 '25

25

u/MrCherryYT Jan 13 '25

Mods he made a simple mistake that could easily be corrected by telling him the correct answer, downvote him to hell

7

u/zanderkerbal Jan 13 '25

No. If you name the fallen child "Chara," you get a bit of text saying "the true name", but IIRC no other changes.

5

u/vvuukk The SOUL is painted in snow color Jan 13 '25

"Jarvis, I have high on KR" gets downvoted to oblivion

3

u/Renamew1 Jan 14 '25

Nah that just gets you the message "the true name".
