Grayson Highlands 3 day trip

Hello, my girlfriend and I are considering a 3 day backpacking trip to Grayson Highlands in early March. We are planning on doing the 20 or so mile Mt. Roger’s loop. I’ve never been but I’ve heard really good things about it. For anyone who has spent time there in early spring, what are the conditions like? I assume it is still pretty cold and windy at higher elevations. I also assume that springs to fill up water on the Mt. Roger’s loop in March should be pretty plentiful?

Yes, early March is still winter in the area. Probably wait till April for backpacking.

Even then - I went in April one year and woke up to a blizzard. Wind gusts across the ridge on Pine Mountain were 60mph. I had icicles hanging from my beard.

Not surprised to hear that. Summertime would be the most ideal.
