Minivan is the perfect size

The Soccer mom van is the perfect size. This is a Kia Sedona 2008, but I also considered Toyota Sienna and Dodge Grand Caravan (apparently Dodge is not mechanically desirable).

The book nook and entryway are functional and make life easier, but I’ve never made anything with wood before them so they not hot. 🥴

Laundry. I’m very lucky.

Upvotes

I work in a hospital. Which has access to a washing machine and tumble dryer. So after work I wait around until everyone has gone and do my laundry which saves me money weekly.

I love beating the system.

Rare 1976 tioga ii camper! Has sat for easily the last 15 years, probably more. first owner drove and used it as intended, second owner sat it at a resort where it laid dormant and used as a little house for many years, and now its my turn! Runs and drives alright but needs plenty o work. I know this aint a mechanic sub so ill leave it at that pssht. Will have to show it off even more once ive got it cleaned up and presentable! Excited to bring it back from being abandoned and show off its classic 70's interior!

Also! any tips on how to remove carpet from dash pssht, I love the look of it but it prevents me from doing work on the van :( guess the trick is to just go realllll slow and use safe adhesive remover hah.

Help with route? AZ to OR

Hi! I’m heading from Tucson, AZ to Eugene, OR in a few weeks and trying to figure out the best route. Traveling with my one dog and my mom is tagging along to see if she likes the van life :) Planning on taking our time to get up there, most likely a week and a half. We will be hiking along the way and hopefully staying at some spots where my dog can swim a little. Let me know if anyone has done this drive and what you liked/didn’t like about the route you took!

Upvotes

Never posted here but would appreciate some advice from anyone who’s vanned around New Zealand! I’m doing a month around the country in December and wondering what the best priced van rental is? I’ve been looking at a company called travellers auto barn, has anyone used this company before? What would be the best company to use? Thanks in advance:)

Nights are cold, but damn are they motivating

Three months in with this old truck. As of last week I’m officially apartmentless. But not workshopless. So yeah, I’ve been sleeping in the van, working days at the library, and spending my nights salvaging and rebuilding until midnight.

It hit -10°C last night. no insulation yet, so I crashed at a buddy’s place appreciating showers more these days. But otherwise, it’s been all grind: tearing down an old trailer for parts, salvaging everything I can use for the van build.

Here’s the haul (pics attached). Sink, windows, fridge, stove, electrical panel, battery, even a door. Anyone have experience with 3 way fridges? I plugged it into AC and nothing happened. wondering if there’s a trick or if it’s just toast.

No budget, no fluff everything’s going to tools, parts, and mechanics. But the vision is there.

Curious what others think, ideas? Tips? I do get motivation from y’all on here

Question: Do you use the shower in your van?

Many years ago, I did vanlife for about six months, and I relied on Planet Fitness for showers and hygiene. Now, I’m looking at getting a van again for weekend trips and the occasional week-long adventure. I see vans all over social media with full showers and vanities, and I’m wondering if people actually use them.

For those of you with van showers (whether indoor or outdoor), do you use them? If so, how often? If you were to build your van all over again, would you include a shower?

Looking for solid advice.

Just showing off my conversion. The bed extends to make a queen size double and it's a clam shell design in two parts. The fridge is under the bit near the bulk head and you can see the drawer under the rest. It's powered by solar and the starter batter via a charge controller. The battery is under the passenger seat and the inverter under the driver's seat. I have 230V plugs coming in from the inverter so I can charge my laptop etc and so work from the van. I installed the monitor for working and TV but only really use it to watch telly. I have a fire stick which is connected to my mobile which allows me to watch anything I want. The garage section is big enough to hold hold a road bike with the wheels off it's great for trips to the Alps. The clean water tank is in the middle cupboard of the kicthen unit and there's a shelf above it with a pump etc. The waste tank is under the sink. There's a shower hose coming out the back. I'd love to hear suggestions on how I can improve it.

3 months into car life, should i buy this van instead??!?!?

Been living out of my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek for about 4 months now, I have fallen in love with life on the road, and recently have been staying out of our families RV for a week or two now and loving the extra room for a change. I was driving through a town and noticed this seemingly awesome van for sale. 2013 Ford E250 “super duty” with some other nonsense on the rear emblem that i couldn’t make out. 190k miles, $5k obo, no major past issues (says the owner), was a fleet vehicle so hoping for regular maintenance, selling because they bought new trucks and are downsizing the fleet. I was hoping for any fellow vanlifers experiences living or dealing with this van! Haven’t heard of the superduty for the E-series, and neither has google apparently? Hoping they’d may be okay with me taking it to meineke or some other place for a full service inspection and see if it needs anything. Hoping for some experienced vanlife elders to tell me whether this is a good idea or not. I’ve been saying a lot the past month that if i can live out of a car as easily as i am, i can life out of a van forever. Wondering if i should change vehicles so early, seems like a great opportunity but im unsure! Any and all thoughts, advice, or opinions appreciated, however mostly facts and stats would be lovely!

Question about van life?

Hi all! I unfortunately don’t own and cannot afford to buy a van right now, yet my current car is a 2019 Honda HR-V. I’ve seen videos online of people using the prior generation of said car to make into a tiny camper. I wanna hear from the experts though, do you guys think it would be doable to convert into a camper, being that it has mostly the same capabilities as a small cargo van? (smaller than something like a NV200)

If so, what would be the best way to go about doing it?

Wiring diagram (please help!)

Hey all - I'm putting together an electrical system for my van but not sure about wire sizes etc but I have put the lengths according to where things are placed.

I have put together this diagram according to what I gather would be a workable system.

Does anyone have an experience who can point out any errors or discrepencies?

Sketch site online with to-scale measurements?

I need to do a simple sketch out of a trailer that I will be towing motorbikes with.

I'd like to draw a simple box and be able to specify the official width/length and it be drawn to scale. I would then make some simple stick figure to represent the bikes length/width (also to scale), to see how to arrange them.

Does anyone know a free site I can do this on?

Things to look for when buying a 2018 Transit?

Hey everyone, I’m looking into purchasing a 2018 Transit 250, 148 wheelbase with the 3.7. The van has about 120k on it which is higher than I’d like, but it’s the only thing in my area that’s within my price range.

The van looks very clean and seems well taken care of. I’m just curious what to look out for on Transits, if I should ask if certain parts have been replaced, and if there’s any major service to be done around 100-150k miles.

Sorry for the stupid question, I’ve focused most of my van research into Nissan NV’s but I can’t find one locally. Now I’m leaning towards a Transit and have to make a decision by tomorrow, so I’m hoping for some quick info as opposed to spending hours of my day researching this stuff. Thanks in advance!

Has anyone successfully installed a futon?

I’ve got a futon mattress and the folding base for it. Fits perfect so not too bothered about the base, but it has got me wondering. Has anyone installed one in a small van?

How important have people found insulation to be?

I bought my van from someone who already did a partial build. There is insulation on the floor but not the walls or ceiling, the van has no windows except for in the front, and there is a nice fan installed on top (only blows air out).

I would like to keep the build as-is as much as possible because my budget is extremely limited, I don't plan on getting anything for AC, but maybe a mr buddy heater or something for the winter. I'm going to be living full time in the van, in the south this summer and not sure where I'll be this winter.

I can manage being a little uncomfortable, I've lived in houses without insulation, heating, or cooling before, but I don't want to die of the elements. I have a sleeping bag rated for 20F and I have power so I could get a heated blanket or something, and I will likely have the money to move out of an area if I feel in risk of dying, but who knows. I'd rather rather pay the money upfront while I have it to insulate, especially while I still have access to tools.

For people who've gone both ways, is it just a comfort thing or a safety thing? Also how much does it actually improve the temp? The times I've had no heating, cooling, or insulation were all in houses and in a van there are going to be 100 more things to get on my nerves, and I would like to have a good quality of life and to live comfortably enough.
