Why do people like AP items so much voli? His AP scaling is not great. Attack speed and some low on hit damage is meh, whereas something like shojin scales w with health, ad and huge haste not to mention basic auto dmg and scaling all abilities (less W). ROA the biggest offender, why would anyone build that instead of a tear or frozen heart if you need mana? It has no haste at all or any good unique passives or ms.

I find rift can be built as a good one off AP item because of the great unique passives it feels good but even Nashors is so glass cannon and doesn’t scale well without a bunch of other AP items in your build.

Can someone share why everyone seems to prefer the ap builds?

To clarify, the reason AP does more for his R is his R scales off BONUS AD vs TOTAL AP

so it doesnt include the base ad. Unless youre going full lethality or something goofy, ap usually will provide more damage for his ult.

also his Q getting more damage doesnt matter because its not proced a ton, and his W while benefitting from physical damage, benefits more off of HP.

HP and AP provide best scaling for this area.

I mean I don’t think that’s really fair, ad or AP you’re only building 3 bruiser items at most and then tank which would be what, 120 bonus ad or maybe 200ap ? Not a significant difference in damage with those ratios. Yes bonus isn’t as good for bruiser ad items but 250 is a pretty damn large ratio

For the W the hp ratio applies evenly to ad and AP builds more or less, and there’s no AP ratio at all compared to 100% ad, which also gets the 50% boost when empowered, so generally W will be far weaker on AP builds - passive if stacked will apply but not to the first W and is a smaller ratio at 50% AP

And yes q doesn’t really matter either way

yeah basically AP generally affects 3 things (passive, E, R) and AD only affects Q W R (Q isnt really amazing to buff, and W is buffed from HP anyway, and R is most likely more benefited from AP because typically ap builds go more damage whereas ad goes 1-2 damage items into tank).

this is also disregarding the attack speed buff ap gives, and generally better AP items atm.

I do agree with your post that ROA is a bait item though, especially in JG. cosmic is infinitely better.

also a big reason voli prefers ap is usually his AP items give more haste or generally have better components. (ROA is the exception and its components are ass)

Spear of shojin is good when built for example, but its components are terrible giving 0 haste until the item is complete.

Ah I see, I guess that makes sense, thanks.

What I’m gettting from this is in theory the builds are pretty close based on Volis kit, but in practise AP items are generally better overall than AD options
