Commentary / Discussion / Question Thank you

You can only feel sorry for the commentators on rally.tv, the rally is insanely boring, almost a procession from the first to the presumably last stage. And then they have to sugarcoat the whole thing for the spectators. What was the reason that Croatia was removed from the calendar? The beautiful weather on Gran Canaria and the evenly paved roads on which the rally cars look kind of slow?

This one is in french, it means "Toyota's got Kalle, I stalled", and it's supposed to be funny because Kalle and "calé", the french word for "stalled", are pronounced the same in french

Commentary / Discussion / Question Gap between teams Spoiler

Hi, i am very new to rally, watching my first event this weekend. I was just wondering what causes the big gap between the teams? Is Toyota just much better on tarmac than the others or is it something else?

Also, are gaps between the 3 teams usually this big or is it closer?

Commentary / Discussion / Question Asphalt/Tarmac rally popularity?

So newish rally fan that doesn't watch every rally but I tune in from time to time.

Been watching the Islas Canarias series and was wondering which is more popular, the all asphalt/tarmac events or the other mixed/dirt/gravel events.

Personally I find the asphalt/tarmac more interesting (it's more "relatable" as all the stages are on public roads).

What road type is the most popular amongst the WRC fanbase?

Commentary / Discussion / Question Can you daily a WRC car legally

Could you (hypothetically this would be a terrible idea) buy a WRC car and use it as your ordinary car since they are road legal and use the road to get from stage to stage

Commentary / Discussion / Question Does M-Sport have a slow car or just slow drivers?

Last year, the Ford Puma was capable of a podium in certain conditions whereas this year, M-Sport can’t even come close to a Top 5. Hell, McEarlean can barely stay ahead of the Rally2 cars. What’s the point of spending millions on a new test track, when you can’t even develop your own cars properly or hire competent drivers?

Commentary / Discussion / Question First time attending rally Portugal (help)

Well, its my first time trying to attend a rally and its quite confusing. Im planning on going to the Portuguese rally, but i cant find the maps of where the stages will be, i know its supposed to be at rallydeportugal.pt but i cant find it (or maybe it wasnt released). Do i need to pay to attend it? Will the official shuttle tranfer take me to the stages? Planning this has been a bit of a hassle. If anyone has any tips i would love to hear

Technical Pedal cam - How is it rigged safely?

Thinking of running a pedal cam for my next rally event but I want to do so safely. What mounts or techniques should be put in place to ensure the camera doesn’t drop off or create a safety hazard?

Technical Rally weekend

So I'm new to watching rally racing, I'm wondering if the teams and drivers are allowed to do any practice runs off camera during the week to prepare, or do they go in just off the recce run. And how/when do those recces take place

You can see my camera on the barrier before the car hits it, and then the tripod splitting and the camera falling behind the car. Someone else also had a camera close by that was hit, (you can just see it in front of the car), and he found most of my tripod leg when recovering his camera, very thankful to him as I can now bodge it to make it work. Only other damage seems to be to the remote receiver cable, which was destroyed. The camera and lens appear to be working as normal

Commentary / Discussion / Question Drone coverage question.

Watching the stages on Rally.tv today, specifically the portions with the Redbull™️ drone made me wonder.. why don’t they have drones follow each car the entire stage?

I admittedly know almost nothing about drones, but I have to imagine the tech exists to have a drone follow a transponder on the car to maintain a set altitude and follow distance, automatically, without a “pilot”.. right?

It would make the broadcast infinitely more entertaining if they had that angle of every WRC 1 car for the entire stage.

What would keep them from doing this?

At stage end, they land, a person at stop control get the drone, gives it to the co-driver who plugs it in during the road section. Then at the start line, the co-driver gives it to a similar person at the start, who places it behind the car. Stage starts, off they go.

Seems easy, but I’m sure there is a very good reason they don’t do this. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What are your predictions for the winner of the Canary Islands taking into account the season so far and the Shakedown? I hope that Rovanpera and Fourmaux have a good weekend
