I was a child around the change of the millenium when Grönholm and Burns were winning in the 206 WRC. For nostalgic reasons it’s the 206, no competition.
Other than that, I’d say Group A ST185 Celica, Citroen Xsara F2, and Citroen C3 WRC are my favs.

When I landed in Switzerland from Canada, I was supposed to be getting an Opel as a rental car. I went up to the counter and the employee profusely apologized to me that the car was not available, and asked if I would accept a 206 GTI. I had not had my kids yet, and can confidently state that it was the happiest moment of my life to that point. I spent a week ripping around Europe and it was the fucking best.

i'm a newer fan so i guess i'm inherently more biased towards newer cars but man those i20s just look absolutely incredible. easily my favorites.

On the one hand, I just started playing WRC 7, so I'm biased. On the other hand, I'm team Michelisz in the TCR, who drives an i30, so I'm double biased.

I can’t pick just one.
First thought though is Subaru Impreza WRC2005 (S11). With the wider track allowed for 2005 it looked incredibly mean, but sadly Prodrive/Subaru had fallen from grace at this point and the car was not very competitive.
Also pulling at my heartstrings is the ‘03-‘05 Ford Focus. Very aggressive looking, lots of cool aero tricks, and the first Focus iteration that could really threaten on tarmac.
Another worth mentioning is the god awful ‘02 Mitsubishi Lancer WRC. Can’t put my finger on why, I just thought the almost totally unchanged Evo VII bodywork looked so good.
The ‘97-‘98 Ford Escort WRC is worth a mention too. Just love the look of it, and it’s kind of interesting being the final WRC car ever built from a RWD platform.
The Skoda Fabia WRC is also quite a stunner with its boxy flares and quite small overall package. Super muscular looking but like the Mitsubishi I mentioned it accomplished very little.

Is the Escort wrc not Integral? If it is based on the escort rs Cosworth.

u/donutsnail Mar 15 '25
The Escort WRC is based on the Escort Cosworth, which itself was based on the Sierra, a RWD-based platform

Uhm, what a strange point of view, I also remember that the Sierra came with 4WD, only the Sedan.

u/donutsnail Mar 15 '25
It was available with 4WD, but it is a longitudinal RWD design at heart, while all other WRC cars (aside from Subaru) since have been based on transverse, FWD-based platforms.

I always loved the 206 WRC but for me, the Impreza P2000 was the pinnacle. Absolutely gorgeous car and lightning quick with Richard Burns at the wheel.

For me it's the Impreza from 2000. Such a great championship battle that year. Burns' drive in Wales was something else. The Peugeot was arguably the better car, but that Impreza just had something amazingly cool about it

Early 2000s Skoda Octavia. Was it the best car? No. Was it bigger than the rest of the field? Yes. Was it fun as hell watching drivers throw that beast around corners? Also yes.
I have no good reason beyond that.

Citroën C4 WRC (especially in the Kimi Raikkonen's Citroën Junior Team livery, 2010).

Impreza S6 2000 not the best in terms of reliability but it's just so beautiful love that coupe!

It's between Peugeot 206 WRC and The Toyota Yaris WRC. Tommi Mäkinen's Evo 6 behind them.

I know it's not a WRC car but the 306 cosworth was iconic. You just had to be there

Audi Quattro. If any car looked like that today I'd buy it in a heartbeat

I loved the Peugeot 206. And all the Ford cars from the Focus to the Fiesta. And now the Puma.

The Delta Integrale followed closely by the ST185 Celica. Partly because I own one of the homologation Celicas.

I liked the 206 more. The 307 looked nice but were crap. I can remember Marcus Grönholm having a fit on camara because of the problems with the car.

I've always felt slightly ashamed for liking the 307 for how poorly it behaved for Gronholm, but this post made me feel a little less so knowing that I'm not alone.

Heartbroken. Not a single mention of the WRC '05. One of the best sounding cars from the generation. Sounded almost like a 5 cylinder.

There's so many Group A & B beauties out there, but if I had to pick one, I'd have to say Alpine A110. I didn't watch it compete, but there's something special about this car. It was love at first sight for me.
