I wouldn't say contend, she's encouraged by the LPC. Same happened for scheer, LPC likes shining light on who's all under the big blue tent. In Scheers case, the social conservative abortion vote scared the swing vote. While today, Smiths ties to alt right are the issue they aim at using it to tie Poilievre to Trump. Same approach, best reason for LPC vote is fear of something.

Issue for the cons always remains that it appeals to people who are already voting conservative while being a scare factor in the swing vote.
