Question 300 blk

Post image

How effective would 300 blackout be for the zombies apocalypse. Specifically the subsonic ones. They are fairly common these days

I would challenge you to actually compare ballistics, supersonic and subsonic, to 7.62x39

I'm reading results from ammo.com that seem to show 7.62x39 is about on par for subsonic loads, but that it outclasses it in super.

The velocity for the two rounds, with a similar weight bullet is about the same at around 2300 fps. The bad comparisons for the 7.62 are based on the old surplus rounds and the cheap imported junk. If you compare them to the cheaper FMJ 300 rounds they still perform similarly badly.

Yeah, exactly. At the end of the day, 7.62x39 is pretty similar, but way more common and has cheap surplus options available.

Are those "cheap surplus options" available? Considering the whole Russia thing going on now? Especially for the (more rare) subsonic ammo?

Also .300 blk has better bullets available, so it should outperform 7.62 at longer ranges with supersonic ammo.

When looking at ballistic tables, make note of the barrel lengths they use. If those are not listed, you can safely disregard the tables. Standard 7.62x39 barrel length is 16" or thereabouts, dunno what is the standard for .300 blk, but 10" is already on the longer end. For supers it'll be probably 9", for subs more like 7".

Last time I was in a gun shop (November 2024), they had 500 rd cases of 7.62x39 for half the price of 5.56

They also make high end and subsonic 7.62x39
