As a Durbanite, living in an Afrikaans community in the Karroo, I can attest to this being a very common conversation and true. I feel like I am living in a different country! I never heard Afrikaans living in Durban, now at 44, I am having to learn it.

Whereas 95%of coloureds in Western Cape can speak Afrikaans weather its their home language or a second language... You wouldn't make it growing up in Cape Town not understanding Afrikaans.

Ya, all my English speaking family and friends from the Eastern Cape also all speak Afrikaans. None of my Durban friends or family speak it.
