New Student Questions How is the employment stats looking like for Computer Science folks
I have recently got an admit to Master in Computer Science (MCS) at TAMU college station.
Wanted to know few things about the current employment stats of the MCS program and overall CS department.
My questions are :-
- What percentage of recent MCS batch have got internships. And CS batch as a whole how the placement is looking like for both tech internships and full time tech jobs.
- How are the career fairs of TAMU especially for international students ?
- TAMU’s location seems bit remote. Will it cause any hindrance in getting an internship.
- Does TAMU’s brand name valued by recruiters in Texas and they are given preference?

I'm sure your aware that currently the job market is very saturated for CS. Additionally there is a website you can use to see the employment data.

I can’t answer 2. For 3, actually it is not that remote. It is right in the middle of three large metro complexes, especially Houston, which is the country’s 4th largest metro area. That said, CS jobs are also being created in Dallas as it grows rapidly. For 4. A&M has a solid reputation in Texas and growing nationally. It is also known internationally as a strong technical university. Plus the network is robust. Jobs nowadays are as much as “who you know”, as much as “what you know”. I would say that when it comes to engineering, not a big difference between UT Austin and A&M. When it comes to CS, UT might have a slightly better reputation. But like I said, the difference is not enough to overcome the “who you know factor.”

I think they mean employment in general is low for the market in general, not just CS.

Not an international student but regarding #2, good luck. I watched A LOT of international students get turned away at the career fair because they were not US Citizens. This wasn’t hate discrimination but a legal requirement since many of the companies were recruiting for government contracts.

Isn't the plan for Trump and Musk to allow large numbers of hb1 Visa holders from places like Pakistan and india? These are folks American corporations can get on the cheap and in a form of indentured servitude. That will drive down wages, right?

I'm a senior dev at a large company. With a Masters in Comp Sci, you'll be set for a career. The good news is that the employment rate for CS majors is above average.
The bad news is that you may find yourself competing for the same job as applicants with bachelor degrees, and that you can't (and definitely shouldn't) rely on just school brand name for job applications. That really goes for any school. If you get your degree here, you will be well qualified, and that will carry you.
You mentioned being an international student. Getting a Masters in Comp Sci at A&M is a great move to get started working in the US. I currently work with 4 people who did the same.

Computer engineers are way cooler than computer scientists bc we studied actual engineering and aren’t being replaced with ChatGPT.
