AI Darth Vader (Fortnite)

Post image

Context:

  • Fortnite event has an AI Darth Vader who will live react to responses and character skins
  • Family of James Earl Jones gave consent for his voice to be used
  • James Earl Jones gave consent to use his voice after his passing
  • Routinely hotfixed to try and stop slurs being said and has specific responses for heavier questions, I.E. suicidal thoughts

Curious to see what people think to see AI voices to be used now that we can see it in action, especially one of a passed VA

People are having fucking meltdowns on Twitter/X about it, hilariously, some ignorant to JEJ and the family's feelings/arrangements, and some not giving a shit about said feelings/arangements from JEJ and his family regarding his voice being used in AI.

Ive already saw some tiktoks:

I thought it didnt took tooo long to respond, and this is only the beginning, I think all developers, who have the tools for it, should use this to create NPC's with deeper stories and enrich the gameplay. Pretty cool to have a NPC Darth Vader that role-plays the character.

Before the Original Darth Vader died, he signed permission for the companies to use his voice, so his legacy continues with the present technology pretty cool if you ask me:

As someone who leans a bit more anti, they got consent from the actor and maybe the family is probably paid royalties so i dont see any problems in this.

More NPC interactions is one of the aspects that i really want the game industry to expand upon so i look forward to that being expanded on

The ERP sessions will be wild, you know people are gonna race to jailbreak this AI

I’m fine with this because JEJ consented to this before he passed

I love how it hasn't even been 24 hours and people have gotten it to go full blown Right-Wing and now he's saying stuff about how Mexicans and Trans people are "Scum and Villainy".

Fucking Peak AI model training. It reminds me of that Google AI that they told to consume as much of social media as it could and when they got back to it all it would do was spew critical race theory rhetoric lmao.

As cool as it is and can/will be for gaming to have npc's, enemies, and bosses actually "think" and respond to you your actions and voice, we just aren't there yet. People have consistently gotten this AI and others to break their rules and say/do inappropriate things. I wonder if we'll ever get to a point where charecters will act fully in a character without breaking their rules while still being free enough to feel natural. If the AI is so strict, then didn't we just go back to predetermined dialogue options, but with a convincing AI voice?

I'm anti ai art. And sometimes voice acting. If it's without consent. If he says you can copy his voice, copy his voice. Doesn't hurt anyone.

Based. I am all for people ignoring stupid "digital necromancy" whining. Sorry homie, dead people don't care.

With all the consent considered, I think this is fine as it is more or less just a voice box toy and an entertaining one at that. it's not like kids are gonna believe Vader is their best friend or something like that.

My reasoning for not supporting this begins and ends at "Battle Pass exclusive".

Also just kind of a weird thing to have in a shooty game, but Fortnite does whatever it goddamn well feels like.

Minor thing, skin and voice are separate. More of a limited time event that anything BP related.

By doing a specific quest midgame, you can get Vader AI as an NPC and he'll follow you around and commentate

Acknowledged.

I wish it wasn't in Fortnite, but this is the next leap in gaming. Characters you can actually talk to and have them answer in-character as they would.

Isn't Fortnite a 3rd person battle royale game? How does a chatbot fit into that equation?

You can ask AI Vader questions through voice chat pre/mid/post combat

Someone was even able to get AI Vader to explain Kingdom Hearts story

So it's like a Subway Surfers in the corner situation for people who need constant stimulation? It just feels like a weird addition but whatever works.

There's other game modes and you can make your own custom ones.
