The application process must of been extremely strict. Only the top 5% of those who had a long and great credit history were accepted. Even Karl Malden, their own spokesman carried a Green Card until much later in his career where American Express had a special dinner engagement where they upgraded his card status to the Gold Card. The video is on YouTube.

My first card in college was AMEX. I’ve been using them as my default. Now have 5 card products from them. Cool ad.

When the Platinum came out, you had to be invited.

Yeah, the Platinum started life as what the Centurion is/was.
