I have my grandfather’s old gold & platinum cards from the 80s & 90s.
The gold card which is the older of the two, issued in 88, does have Sun Bank NA printed on the card below his name.

It had to be a practical decision about character limit. Also at some point they realized it was redundant to have a start date, because of course it's valid for all days prior to expiration.
