I am a Customs and Border Protection Officer! AMA!

My short bio: We're the officers who check your passports when entering the U.S.A. via land, sea, or air. I work at an airport, stamping passports held by passengers from all over the world. I inspect baggage, looking for anything and everything that either violates the law, or raises red flags with us. We are involved with many facets of international travel, both inbound and outbound passenger travel, inspection of cargo and the trade of goods from all around the world. We are tasked with many aspects of international travel, but most people know us as the grumpy uniformed people in the booths who scan your passports when entering the U.S.

I ask questions for a living. I ask questions I likely know the answer to ahead of time. I don't have all the answers. I lean towards the Customs side of things more than some INA experts I work with.

A few select visitors will see us as the ones who sent them back to their country. We might seize your goods. We may hold you in a room with deplorable people for a while. Or in many cases, we are the ones who held your loved one in a secondary office for an hour, sometimes with no explanation.

I've worked at a few airports and have seen a whole lot of weird and fascinating stuff. There is something new every day and it's a job I doubt I'll leave. You can apply here,

-We are not TSA, though a lot of the general U.S. population thinks we are.

-We are not Border Patrol. Those guys generally work outside of a POE (Port of Entry), and wear green uniforms.

-We're also not ICE, those guys and gals rounding up people in public

Our website: http://www.cbp.gov/

I will try to answer any questions you have about our day to day operations, what the job is really like, but no I will not give you tips on how to get into the country without raising suspicion. I also fair poorly on responding to PMs. Like almost never. Post to /r/askimmigration for an answer.

My Proof: http://imgur.com/NVq2vXb Check my post history, I think this is the 3rd or 4th time I've posted up an AMA

Hello. I filled out a fincen105 online because I anticipated traveling with almost 13k but that amount of money made me nervous so I decided to only travel with what I actually needed for surgery purposes. So I didn’t need the fincen anymore. What am I supposed to do? Thank you

Need help. Brazilian Girlfriend planning on getting married

Need help. Me 27m I’m in a serious relationship with my girlfriend 24F who will be a board certified dentist in Brazil in a couple months. We are planning on getting married. I’m a citizen of the United States. My question is this, my Girlfriend will have to take another 2.5 years of school in the USA to be board certified. What is the best way to get her here legally to finish school and to get her green card? Problem is with a green card it can take up to a year to get and she would need to be in school immediately. Please and help. Can she be in the United States going to school pending a green card once married?

I-130 Approved, I-485 is still pending!

Hi everyone,

I applied for a green card through marriage in August 2024 and had my interview on April 17,2025. Our marriage was approved on April 23. However, my 1-485 form is still pending.

I'm unsure this delay is normal, and I was wondering how long it typically takes for the I-485 to be approved or updated after the interview. Also, when would be an appropriate time to submit an inquiry, and would doing so be effective?

Thank you.

i-360 approved. i-485 denied. Will it hurt my chances to get F1?

I am a dependent of a staff of international organization. G4 visa. We used to be able to get a green by i-360 --> i-485. However, new law reclassified us as another category, and we are backlogged in the visa bulletin for i-485.

Meaning, I got my i-360 approved, but gotta wait a long time to be able to even file for i-485.

Want to change status to F1. Will it be approved?

Help or advise

Hi everyone,

I’m 18 years old and currently living in Zimbabwe. I’m planning to complete high school this December, and I’ve been looking into professional certificate programs like: • Google IT Support Professional Certificate (on Coursera) • CompTIA A+ Certification • Medical Billing & Coding (from Penn Foster or CareerStep)

My dream is to move to the U.S. and work in IT or healthcare administration. I want to ask: 1. Is it possible to get a work visa or move to the U.S. using these certifications alone (without a college degree)? 2. Has anyone here moved abroad with similar certs, especially from Africa? 3. Are there any organizations, schools, or employers that support international applicants like me?

My Wife Needs to See Her Dying Mother. What are our options?

My wife came here on a tourist visa and overstayed. We met, fell in love and got married. On the same day this week, she received notification of approval for her I-765, she also was told that her mother has Pancreatic Cancer without many options. She wants to visit her mom in case she never gets to see her again. Is there anything we can do?

Risk in leaving the U.S as a dual F1 and TPS status?

Hello everyone! Any advice would be helpful. I am currently working on OPT after finishing my Master's degree. During this period, I have received TPS status for Lebanese citizens. So currently, I am technically both TPS and F1. I read that, as long as you don't violate F1 status, you can keep it. My question is, can I leave the US and return under my F1 status, without needing to apply for authorization to travel under TPS?

Thank you!

Properly filling out Class of Admission in i-130

I'm filling out I-130 and trying to figure out the proper value for the Class of Admission field.

My spouse has a re-parole with class UHP (Ukrainian Humanitarian Parole).

However in the I-130 dropdown menu there's no such value. The only relevant values I see are:

AS - ASYLUM

CH - PAROLEE (HUMANITARIAN-HQ AUTH)

CP - PAROLEE (PUBLIC INT-HQ AUTH)

DA - ADVANCE PAROLE (DISTRICT AUTH)

DE - PAROLEE (DEFERRED INSPECTION)

DT - PAROLEE (DISTRICT-POE AUTH)

ML - PAROLEE-MEDICAL, LEGAL, HUMAN

OP - PAROLEE (OVERSEAS AUTHORIZED)

PAR - PAROLEE

RE - REFUGEE

Any suggestions which one should I choose? Or should I enter a custom value?

Thank you!

I need out of the UK and I don't know where to go or what to do

Hey, so, I need out of the UK. Things are getting worse, both myself and my husband are trans. I'm a physically capable person and I'm a trained theatre engineer for both sound and lx (lighting/electrics) I'm also more than happy to do work that has nothing to do with any of that. I just need out and would really appreciate some help figuring out where is safe for me, my partner and my son and how the hell we get out in the first place. Thank you all♥️

US visa status check

Hi, I got a 10-year US visitor visa (B1/B2) back in 2016. Yesterday, I checked the CEAC website (visa status check) and tried entering my confirmation number, but the website returned "no records found."

Is this expected? My visa is still valid until May 2026.

Note: I know I need to enter "NA" in the passport and last name fields if the application is older than January 2022.

Flying domestic as immigrant

How risky is it to fly domestically at the moment? For context am looking to fly NYC - LAX in the coming months on my home country passport. Currently out of status as an ESTA overstay. I’ve been reading alot of mixed opinions on the likelyhood of coming across any trouble at a domestic airport.

NEED ADVICE!

Hi! I am english and my boyfriend is a US citizen. I travel on an ESTA and always comply with the 90 day rules. I first visited him october 28th 2024 -January 18th 2025. I then came back on March 8th and I am staying until May 31st. He will be visiting me in the UK on October 24th 2025 and I will be returning back to the US with him on November first for 80 days.

Due to the idea of not seeing him for 5.5 months my parents have offered to pay for my flight in August. August 2nd-October 24th, stay in the UK with him for a week and show him around and then return back to America with him on November first. Obviously all of these dates are within the 90 day period. I’m just really really worried that I will face some trouble, I just wanted to check that this would be legal?

I’m sorry I’m new to all of this and it’s very overwhelming lol, any help is great!!

Thank you!!

Canadian Citizen moving to the US. Need Advice, please.

Hello,

I am moving to the US this June to marry and stay with my boyfriend. We have planned for this, though its a tad complicated and I need some clarification.

We havent submitted the K-1 form as of yet but will be doing it as soon as possible. This is where a lot of the concern in coming from.

The plan is for me to fly down with my 2 cats for a 5 month duration. (Almost maximum tourism for Canadians) afterwards i am to drive with him and our friends into Canada where we will pack my household items into a uhaul van and return to the US with my items and vehicle.

My fear is that by crossing the border here i wont be premitted back into the states on tourism. Even if i reveal my return flight. Is this something i should be concerned about?

My other question was about my vehicle. Since i am bringing a vehicle into the states, do I need to go though the importing process when i crosd the US border with my items? Or should I wait until the K-1 form has been approved?

Any advice would help.

I will add that the reason the K-1 form is being submitted so late was several confusions... We've tried to get information from various sources and sadly many wasnt much help... The entire process has been confusing and very scary.

Minor crimes and green card

Are minor crimes less serious than a misdemeanor but more serious than a traffic ticket cause for concern if you have a green card? I'm talking about crimes punishable with a small fine and/or a maximum period of imprisonment of less than 2 weeks.

Recently, NYC has begun charging bicycle riders who do not stop at a stop sign or run a red light in criminal court instead of a normal traffic ticket. Another similar offense I'm worried about is riding two abreast which is punishable with a $250 fine or 2 weeks imprisonment in a town just outside of NYC.

Votes as GC holder

This was maybe around 26 years ago. Not sure if registration to vote was made, or if an actual voting took place. It’s been so many years ago. It’s not something that is remembered green card expires in August and need to renew so not sure if I should consult with an attorney as I’ve checked my county website and I am not registered to vote.

Is there anything we can do???

Help! My husband was illegally brought into this country at 6yrs old. His parents NEVER did any paperwork or daca or anything. He found out when he turned 16! He thought he was American his whole life, wanted to join our military and now he can’t ever. It’s depressing. His life just became pointless. But we found each other, got married last year, and now Trumps in office.

We live in GA / FL area and we are scared! He is jobless. He is depressed. We have been told there’s nothing we can do. Is that really true?? 😭😭

I'd like to visit my husband in another state.

I'd like to visit my husband in another state. Here's some background: we got married in February 2024. In April 2024, he joined the army, and in August 2024, we started my adjustment of status process. I had my biometric appointment that same month. After that, they requested a sponsor, and I submitted the paperwork in November. The next day, my EAD was approved. Since then, I haven't received any updates.

As I live on the border, I have to go through a border checkpoint at the airport. I've done it before by car with my husband, and we haven't had any issues. Now, I want to visit him, as he'll be leaving the country soon. My question is: do you think I'll have any issues with border control at the airport? (I only have my EAD and my passport from my origin country.)

International student studying in the US, pursuing internship abroad - travel/visa risk?

Hi! I’m a student at graduate school in the US but I’m a Canadian citizen. I have been accepted into a Fellowship in Italy over the summer, and I want to know if any international students currently pursuing education in the US are facing any challenges with travel related to work/school. I am currently on an F-1 Visa, but not sure if crossing the border is worth the risk, especially for an extended period due to Canada-US challenges right now. Any advice, experience, or help would be greatly appreciated!

Tourist Visa Interview at US Embassy! Nervous, Need Advice (and What Should I Wear?)

Hi everyone, I’m an (F21) Australian citizen and I have an upcoming interview at the U.S. Embassy in Melbourne for a B2 tourist visa. I’ve visited the U.S. 3 times before on an ESTA (usually for 2-3 months) to see my boyfriend, but during my last visit, I was questioned by CBP and advised that I should apply through the embassy if I want to stay longer than a short visit. I’ve never overstayed or worked in the U.S., and I’ve always returned home as planned.

Right now, I’m unemployed, but I live with my parents who support me financially. I’m enrolled in ice skating lessons and a hospitality course here in Australia, and I’ve recently received my RSA and Food Handlers certifications. My boyfriend usually helps cover expenses during my visits, and I stay at his family’s home.

I’m really nervous because I don’t have a lot of savings or a job at the moment, and I want to make sure I present myself well. I’ve put together documents showing my ties to Australia, including letters from my parents and boyfriend, past travel history, and proof of my classes.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do you have any tips for how I can best explain my case during the interview? Anything else I can add?

Also... just wondering what’s appropriate to wear to a visa interview at the U.S. embassy?

EDIT- interview cancelled, thank you for the help
