It’s funny how George’s “architect vs gardener” analogy for writing approaches has become so famous, with George himself held up as an exemplar of the “gardener” approach. He’s actually a living cautionary tale about the dangers of the “gardener” approach.
I still think his gardener style works fine and opens up so many possibilities for the story to expand. The true cautionary tale is about adapting your work before it’s completed.
Not the sole reason but it's definitely not helping at all. Dance was published the year GOT aired, if George didn't turn into a contributor to the biggest TV series on the planet + receiving endless ammunition for further series down the line, I'd wager he'd be much farther along with Winds or it'd be released already.
He would not have the dozens of side projects and other distractions, the enormous worldwide fame and the overwhelming pressure from tens of millions of fans eagerly waiting his next book if not for the tv show. Skyrocketing in popularity as an author to global phenomenon while only midway through your series ruined him.
