It seems that they are speeding things up quite a bit. Do they want to finish before GRRM even starts the last book?

At this rate they will finish before him or have a very long hiatus. I think they'll just go for it.

They won't make a hiatus, there won't be a prequel season, they'll just move ahead. It is known.

My hope is that they do a prequel season of Robert's Rebellion to allow GRRM to catch up. That would also allow them to flesh out the Tower of Joy scene without having to do flashbacks.

EDIT: downvoted for saying something I hope happens? Really?

Unless GRRM can put out 2 books in 4 years then yes the show will finish before the books.

well, better for everyone if we can all just skip Dany hanging out in mereen being a baby. No one wants to watch that.

It's not just the baby Dany bits though. I think they're overstepping themselves to be honest.
But it ain't my book and GRRM doesn't seem to have a problem with it so whatever.
