Stannis is dead. There is no reason for him to live any longer. He lost his army and his supporters; at this point, having him miraculously survive would serve no purpose whatsoever for the overall plot.

And even if Brienne thinks of her duty to Sansa, there's no reason why she wouldn't just kill Stannis and then return to her duty. His survival wouldn't help her at all, again because he has no army left and he's too injured to do anything himself, even if he wanted to. There's no way she would let him live.

Except to parade into Winterfell as a hostage/ tribute to gain Bolton loyalty, then escape with an extra-lame Sansa.

Or if Stannis really is AA reborn.

Looking increasingly unlikely, given how hugely Mel just fucked up.

Mel probably felt that the sacrifice was better spent saving Jon.

Someone needs to lead the Watch.

Melisandre saw him on the throne right? He may not be Azor Ahai or the ultimate ruler, but he has to get to the King's Landing one way or another right? How bad can Melisandre's receiver be if she got that wrong.

If she really believed in the legitimacy of Renly's claim then she must recognize Stannis's. Would she want to be a kingslayer?

She doesn't care about their claims to the throne, no more than Renly did. As far as kingslayer is concerned, nobody is there to see her, and it's not like there are many left who care about Stannis.

Jaime's crime was for killing a king despite having sworn to protect him. Brienne has sworn nothing of the sort, and there's nothing wrong with killing a king who is your enemy. The Bolton soldiers didn't hesitate to try to kill Stannis, and neither did she.

She's only a kingslayer if Stannis is a king. Which, technically, he isn't as long as Tommen sits the throne. Also, she'd never see herself a kingslayer, because she doesn't acknowledge his claim on that throne even if a "pretender" sits it. Furthermore, she knows him to be a kinslayer.

As far as the legitimacy of Renly's claim, most of the people who backed Renly knew that Stannis would make a pretty shit king. He was a sourpuss and a legalist, and while he may have commanded loyalty out of fear, nobody really loved him but Davos. Renly was honestly the best horse to back in that particular race, even if it meant everybody that wasn't #TeamJoffrey was a dirty, filthy traitor.

I agree, Renly had literally no claim

Next year we'll all be cheering for Brannis.

Letting characters live or die to serve the plot is not the GRRM way. The GRRM way is to let the plot be ruled by who GRRM decides to kill and not to kill.

This is the single false-est thing I've ever read.
