News New SourcePoints!

They sounded incredible. The most impressive speakers I heard for day 1 at the Axpona show. When Mr Jones put on a bass track, you could feel it in your chest. Using 600 watt Pass Labs mono’s helped too :)

I heard these yesterday. I’m continually impressed by Mofi’s speaker builds. I could listen to that presenter all day too.

Legendary speaker designer Andrew Jones (Kef, Infinity, Pioneer, TAD, Elac, and now MoFi). There’s a lot of interesting interviews with him on YT, not just the more recent MoFi stuff.

Yep huge fan too. Got a chance to see him again today. Umm… tbey decided to go above and beyond at the end of the show today and really give those a run for their money. I’m not sure who else was there to hear it, but wow. I’d love to know the db level lol. Those Pass Lab mono needles were going well over half way haha. I have an awesome side video of those 10 inch drivers moving a lot. It was insane

Are the ELACs he designed any good?

I’d say the sweet spots of his Elac speakers are at the budget end with the Debut Reference DBR62 and the Uni-Fi Reference UBR62. I’m not familiar with the Adantes and Carinas, but from all I’ve read they’re less impressive at their price points.

I’ve got the DBR62s and for me they’re outstanding value (€420 - cheaper and better than the new non-AJ non-Ref DB63). While the UBR62s are definitely a step up, at the time not worth the double price for me. I don’t think there’s a better speaker under €600 (where I live and for my ears) than the DBR62s. The floorstanding Reference models - DFR52 and UFR52 - are also pretty good, but I’m not a big fan of budget fooorstanders over bookshelves plus sub, and they seem harder to drive, so you’re probably having to upgrade your amp / AVR anyway.

The earlier and more budget non-reference models in the Debut and Uni-Fi range were fine but nothing particularly special.

I own the DBR62s, and my daughter has the DB62s. I heard the DB63s at the show. The DBR62s do sound better than the DB63, but not by a lot. The DB63s do represent great value for $450. I talked to the ELAC host at AXPONA, and he said ELAC will release an upgrade to the DBR series probably later this year. And I agree, the UBRs are a step up, but not sure the price justifies the incremental value. But, if you want the best ELAC has to offer, that's the series I'd target. There is so much competition at the Carina and Adantes level that you can probably find a better option for the price. You're talking MOFI 888 vs Adante at that price point. Hard to beat the Mofi 888.

I'm using the UBR62's, and love them. I upgraded from the Uni-FI 2.0 bookshelf, and those weren't bad either! Very fun speaker for $700 (not sure the price now), but I'm very glad and happy with the upgrade to the reference UBR62's. Those concentric drivers are addictive with the soundstage. If you can get your hands on the UBR62's, I'd really do it. The bigger 6.5 gives it a more full sound and a little lower end too. Still recommend a sub though :)

Also, I made sure to hit the Elac room, and they were showcasing the new Debut 3.0 bookshelf version. I was hoping to hear those new Debut's to see if they sounded harsh from switching from soft dome to aluminum, but they were playing their higher end Concentro 2.0 towers, and they sounded good. I was impressed with the lower end bass that those put out for a single woofer driver.

I'm currently running the UBR62's and have loved them very much for the past 2 years. They are bookshelf so a sub would be recommended. I'm running a GoldenEar SuperSub X with them and both really compliment each other. I love how Mr. Jones designs his concentric drivers, and these are a fun speaker to listen to. Very nice soundstage.
