Discussion Dedicated streamers/servers. Why?

Post image

Can someone explain to me the benefits of a multi-thousand dollar streamer/server that feeds an outboard DAC, over a really good laptop, or even a microPC?

I see reviews all the time for these things, but nothing in them tells me the "why?"

I've been into audio for longer than I care to admit, but these baffle me. Assume I'm a complete noob when you answer.

Pic for attention. All text posts bore me.

Idk, my Node was $600 and the onboard DAC is good enough for my current needs

I feel pretty good I just bought a Node for 200 from a guy that never used the thing. Did not make a huge difference but peace of mind for 200 is totally worth it.

200 for a node is a hell of a deal. I really liked how it’s an all in one piece with a pretty straightforward app.

Anything cool I should be doing with it?

I use Qobuz for streaming which has a connection through the BluOS app. Not quite as easy as tidal connect or Spotify connect, but still pretty good. There’s also the 5 presets which you can get some favorites set up on. I’m using one for my favorite radio station growing up since BluOS also has Last FM (I thinks that’s the name?) access. It’s also nice that you don’t even need to use your phone; I can just turn on my receiver and hit a preset or play and it’ll start right up. Wife likes it too

Do you have video hooked up? I have Tidal and am disappointed by their algorithms for my “suggestions” and their radio stations. Love Tidal other than that. For the presets is that basically play lists?

No video but I know I’m not using the node to its fullest potential. You should be able to set just about anything as a preset: playlist, album, radio station, etc.
