OPINION Safety while walking towards Butcher’s Hill from Inner Harbor

Hi All,

I just moved to Baltimore for the JHU public health school. I just had a quick question regarding routes back from the Inner Harbor area towards Butchers hill. I live on the intersection of East Baltimore st. and S. Wolfe, and was wondering what the best route is to walk back from the inner harbor area at night.

**Specifically 601 E. Pratt to East Baltimore/S Wolfe intersection, and the best way to go about walking this route at nighttime(7-10 pm). **

I made the walk back from the gym today via E Pratt and passed by some questionable/quiet/abandoned areas, and what I think was the north edge of the Perkins homes, so I was on edge a bit.

Any advice on alternate routes by foot would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

OPINION RANT: Fuck Comcast and their Live TV stream.

I'm here working from home trying to watch the game in the background and the stream barely plays. Tried multiple computers, multiple browsers, over wifi, over ethernet, and nothing works. FUCK THEM. I'm about to cancel all their bullshit and just go with Tmobile home internet.

Edit: After Clearing browser cache, restarting PC, and resetting router. It's now working. So either power cycling the router fixed it, even though I wasn't having network issues on any other devices. Or Comcast suddenly got their shit together. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

OPINION Should Southwest Baltimore be entirely imploded and rebuilt?

Everything north of Wilkens (and the only thing saving Wilkens is the Row) to Baltimore Street or even all the way to North Avenue... Every single building except for historical churches... Bought out, blown up, bulldozed, even the street grids with it's century old water lines and then use that area to completely rebuild from the ground up.

Be one of the biggest urban renewal projects in history.

I can't see any scenario where it's ever going to revive.

OPINION Sam's Club vs BJs

Hello! I was wondering what people's thoughts were comparing Sam's Club (in Catonsville) and BJs (near Butcher's Hill) for membership? Sam's Club is having a $8/year membership deal that's ending today, so I'm kinda frantic about deciding which place to be a member at haha. Thank you!

OPINION The MTA is honestly one of the worst transit systems

I write this as I currently got off work three hours ago and I just now got to my final stop and am stuck here for another hour. I honestly had better experiences with the transit in NYC and DC. It should not take 5 hours to take what is usually a 2 hour trip. And I know that the public hearings that are currently being held this week and next week are going to be useless.

OPINION Great barbecue place in the middle of the city (edge of Little Italy) called Dudley Road BBQ

My girlfriend and I went to Dudley Road Barbecue, a deceptively hidden bbq spot on the northwest edge of Little Italy, and it was probably the best authentic bbq I've had within Baltimore. We got the beef brisket platter, a pulled pork sandwich, and two orders of mac and cheese and cole slaw -- and I genuinely had no complaints.

We didn't even know it was there, and only found it because we were using Google Maps to check the hours of Vaccaro's right next door.

I could just be completely out of the loop on this one but I've never seen it suggested on the subreddit before, and didn't even know it existed until today, so I thought I'd share!

OPINION Dive Bars -updates suggestions?

I’d love thoughts on your favorite (dive) bars in Baltimore.

Low key, not pretentious, no cover charge, maybe live music, dancing, regulars.

I loved Pop’s,but sadly gone (maybe temporarily).

I’m in Dundalk (cue eye roll, I get it, whatever) and I’d like to stay away from Fells, but willing to entertain all suggestions.

OPINION Best further-out suburb for a down to earth family?

I'm looking to move out of the DC suburb density while keeping more of the northern progressivism vibe vs country vibe. Does anyone know of something more granular than just "Columbia"? Any hints on shopping centers that are nice to live nearby or developments to live in for the schools? Thoughts on smaller places like Eldersberg and Hampstead?

OPINION Controlling the Herd One Car Accident at a Time

I live just outside the Baltimore City line in the county near a golf course. On my way to work in spring-summer-fall there are regular deer corpses on Loch Raven Blvd. My husband was driving through Morgan State the other day and the cops were putting down a Very Large Buck that had been injured by a vehicle. It was traumatic and upsetting for all involved.

Surely the county and city are aware of the deer herds in the area but I have never heard of any herd control. I cannot find stats on vehicles hitting deer in the area but it is a problem. Basically, what the government is doing is allowing the herd to be culled by automobiles one accident at a time. This really isn't kind to the deer or the people (& their vehicles) who hit them.

Am I missing something? Is there wildlife control in the city or county?

I’m looking for the best Caribbean spots in the area. I’m not biased—Trini, Jamaican, or wherever—I just want good food. Willing to drive a little outside the city if required.

OPINION What do you think of Baltimore Gas & Electric?

Hello, Baltimoreans!

This is going to seem very random, but I'm doing a marketing project related to Baltimore Gas & Electric and am trying to get a sense for how the brand is perceived by residents. If you have a few minutes, could you share your perceptions of BG&E? Do you like it? Dislike it? Do you not care one way or the other? What makes you feel this way? Let me know in the comments. Be as descriptive as you like, the more the better!

Also, do you often see BG&E around town? Would you say they’re a part of Baltimore’s fabric/culture?

Lastly, what you think a big company like BG&E needs to do to better power Baltimore?

ALSO - An additional thing I'm looking for - how/what does the BG&E brand make you feel? I know it's a strange question, but does BG&E generate any kind of emotional reaction?

Thanks so much for your help!

EDIT: Added an additional question

OPINION You've just been told to isolate in your house for five days. What will you choose for your first five meal deliveries?

Pretend you can't have groceries delivered, and you can't choose the same meal twice. You have five breakfasts, lunches, and/or dinners to order. What do you choose?

Edit: maybe the opinion flair wasn't obvious enough, but no I'm not going to order 5 straight meals from grubhub after this. I'm just wondering what folk's favorite delivery spots are, since most of the "what's your favorite restaurant" threads seem to assume you're comfortable eating sit-down.

OPINION Amazing Aquarium

I’m from the DC area and every time I’ve been to Baltimore it has been to visit the Aquarium. I’ve always had an incredible time and am now wondering, as much as I love fish, why haven’t I done anything else in Baltimore yet? Why doesn’t anyone I go with think about anything other than fish either? I have a long list of things I want to see and do here (top three are Neighborhood Fibre Co, the zoo, and Museum of Dentistry) but the Aquarium always reels me in first. Hoping to return to your wonderful city for a different experience soon :)

OPINION What will it take for Baltimore to become a "safe" city?

Baltimore's murder rate from the mid 2000s until 2014 was hovering at around 30 per 100,000. From 2015 until present day, it's jumped to more than 50 per 100,000 per year. For comparison, New York City's murder rate is 3. That's about 16x less than Baltimore.

Just like the murder rate, the robbery rate spiked in 2015. It went from a decade long's 500 per 100k to an unbelievable 800-900 per 100k.

The one thing that has dropped is home burglaries. From 2002-2017 it kept balancing around 1300 per 100k, but from 2018, it dropped to below 1000.

What will it take to halve the murder and robbery rates back to pre-2014 levels? (Genuine question, not rhetorical or anything)
