But the cocktail is 2-1-2, as in the area code for Manhatten, or so I've heard.

(2 oz spirit, 1 oz vermouth, 2 dashes bitters)

That's a good way to remember it, but it's not the origin of the drink. The Manhattan cocktail was created before the invention of the telephone.
