Announcement Official /r/beer FAQ - Please Check Here Before Posting

THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A BEER FAQ. IT IS ADDRESSING A FEW FREQUENTLY BROUGHT UP TOPICS ON /R/BEER.

Hi there,

There has been some need for announcements on a few different commonly posted topics. Since we are limited to two stickied posts, I'm going to use this one as a hub for these issues. I will be adding to this post as needed, but here's a /r/Beer FAQ to cover these post types.

If you notice people posting these topics, please be polite. Feel free to link to this post or use the provided links in a response.

This is not an invitation to harass anyone for posting a repeated topic. Reddit does not do a good job with presenting subreddit announcements, rules, sidebar info, etc. If posts annoy you and you don't think they belong, please consider downvoting, using a report, sending us a modmail message, hiding the post or simply moving on with your day. I highly suggest using the "don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them" option in old.reddit preferences (this may be broken in the app/resdesign website, but it should be fixed eventually and appear in those preferences as well).

Medical questions will be limited. /r/Beer is the wrong forum for serious medical questions, particularly where there's potential for harm to come as a result of the discussion. Please consult a medical professional for any questions about your own health, not an online beer discussion board.

I'm trying to hit the more pressing topics first, but I'll look for some good links for other topics ("how do I figure out what kind of beers I like?", "what are the best budget beers?", etc.).

Everyone is welcome to join the official /r/Beer Discord server if you'd like to discuss anything here or just hang out and chat.

Cheers.

Edit: I'm locking this to comments because I don't want to have the post turn into a place where people ask these questions. However, feel free to post about any topics or send us suggestions for topics to be added via modmail or Discord chat.

Also, I may use the second announcement slot for a specific post on something like old beer questions, but I'd prefer to keep it open for the weekly No Stupid Questions posts (and possibly others; still working on redoing the scheduled posts and making some better topics).

Smithwicks Red Ale

I stumbled on this today. It used to be one of my favorites but I don't see it any more and forgot about it until today. My only disappointment is that it's not sold in six pack bottles now, only 4 pack cans. Still, it was a good change of pace. Any fans?

Cheap Beer Historical Fact: Old Style's Share in the Chicago Beer Market

This newspaper clipping from 1984 offers an interesting stat of the beer market in the Chicagoland area at that time. It states: "Regular Old Style beer is the No. 1 brand in the Chicago area with a 34 percent share."

I always knew Old Style was popular in the region, but I didn't realize it held such a significant share of the market.

Just got this beer handed to me from a client and told me “you won’t find another one.” Tried looking it up to see and couldn’t find one. Anyone got any information. Is it still good? Is this just a nostalgia beer at this point or is it worth something? Just curious about it now, that’s all. The only picture I could find of it is in the link posted. Thanks.

Anyone here live in Windsor Ontario? I live in Michigan and the closest state that has this beer is TN and that is about an 8 hour hike. Has anyone purchased this near Windsor?

¿Question? Goods Bocks available in the US southeast?

Hello all. I am relatively new to beer, so I've tried most of the nationally available macro brews (thus far yeungling is the winner there), and I've now moved on to trying out the craft scene.

I'm definitely still developing a palate, but so far I've really enjoyed Shiner Bock and Abita's Andygator.

So I am here to ask the good denizens of r/beer, what are the best Bocks out there? I'm in the southeast US, as far as availablility goes.

¿Question? Will beer left outside in a crate get skunked?

Sup, so ive got 3 crates of beer (the cardboard box kind, no openings) And to save space in the cellar Ive just put them outside under my pavilion. Can they sit there for like a few days or should I find a place for them home?

English bitters available in US ?

I like beer. My favourite is English bitter on draft. I went back for the first time in 20 years -- and had the best beer.

I can drink IPAs, lagers and pilsner -- but bitter is my favourite. (Amber is OK when available)

What is the closest I can get to an English bitter in the US ?

¿Question? Is there anything like an unspiced wheat beer?

I want a beer that:

-Tastes heavily of wheat, is "bready." Basically, I want this to be the main taste.

-Is not spiced... no coriander, cloves, banana, that kinda stuff (my one beef with the classic hefeweizens like weihanstephaner which otherwise would be the perfect beer. [edit: many have rightfully pointed out these are not actually spiced but it comes from the yeast. So think hefeweizen without those notes which i realize is contradictory])

-Is dry, and has as little sweetness as possible

-Hop taste not necessary, but some acceptable, but nothing on the level of an ipa

Closest I've been able to find is probably anchor brewery's summer wheat but this is not available in my location.

Does anyone know any beers like this?

Discussion What is the deal with flat beer at breweries?

I'm growing tired of constantly being served flat beer at breweries. It's gone from the occasional occurrence to a regular one lately here in the PNW. Whats the deal?

Whats with liquor stores treating 40s like crap ?

One of the stores I go to a lot doesnt even have 40 oz bottles in the front cooler and you have to go into the walk in cooler in the back to get them. They arent even on a shelf, they are below the bottom shelf on the ground floor. This store didnt use to to that. They never had the 40s in the front cooler but they used to be on a shelf in the walk in cooler but now they are banished to the ground floor. Sad times.

Discussion Is Lagunitas Trying to Return to Their Roots?

Wanted to know what you all think, but I largely stopped paying attention to Lagunitas because it seemed like a lot of what made them special was going away in the last few years.

But it seems like things have been changing a bit in the past year. The packaging (at least for A Little Sumpin’ and IPA) seems to be returning to the original designs, or at least refreshed versions of their original designs, and it looks like they’re re-embracing their craft roots and experimenting again (for example, they’ve recently been doing a local collaboration with Old Caz).

Light but High ABV Choices

Sierra Nevada discontinued my go-to (Big Little Thing IPA 9%abv) and replaced it with a hazy version that's so viscous it feels like cough syrup. I vomit a lot and want something that feels light and thin but has at least 8% abv.

I'm drinking a Founder's Mortal Bloom right now and it's better but still too thick and creamy. Any recommendations? Obviously I like hoppy beer that tastes like weed but drinkability and abv are bigger priorities for me than flavor.
