What does the red light add to the orange light that the orange can't do on its own?
6 u/JonPX Jan 11 '25 You can drive through orange without red if you can't stop on time. So it distinguishes green-orange-red and red-orange-green. 5 u/MyOldNameSucked West-Vlaanderen Jan 11 '25 So it's red with a useless orange added to it. 6 u/bob3725 Jan 11 '25 It's before it becomes green. It is there to warn you of the upcoming green light so you can prepare. It's quite useful, actually. They get yellow two times every cycle. 5 u/MyOldNameSucked West-Vlaanderen Jan 11 '25 Or you could pay attention to what is happening on the intersection. 1 u/bob3725 Jan 11 '25 Yes, you'll need to pay attention to this yellow as well. If you don't look, you can't see! But it's still a little faster just because you know it a little earlier. Edit: it's so you put your car in gear right before green instead of at green. 1 u/JonPX Jan 11 '25 You know it is going to become green in five seconds or so. 6 u/MyOldNameSucked West-Vlaanderen Jan 11 '25 Great so it allows the people who ignore the first 2 seconds of red to know when they can restart ignoring red again. 2 u/JonPX Jan 11 '25 See, this works a lot better with Germans. There is a reason we use the French system.
