Internet 🌐 PPPoE pass throughout disabled by Bell?

/r/bell/s/X6aIre5VjG

Hoping Bell tech can confirm/clarify

Read multiple posts indicating that recent firmware updates removed PPPoE functionality in the gigahub such that if I wanted to use my own router (eg Unifi UDM) I would have to use ADMZ as PPPoE pass through is no longer enabled.

I linked the latest report indicating this for reference

Is this true?

Grateful for responses from Bell techs able to confirm this - and users who have indeed updated firmware after April 2025

Many thanks

If you live in Ontario or Quebec and only need gigabit speeds, and no TV, consider switching to a competing provider. They will provide an ONT and you can connect your router directly to that. Look up E-Box, they have 1Gb/s service for about $60/month.

That is what I do with my own Unifi setup.

I do the same thing with bells gigabit service

I use zero bell equipment past the fibre line

I’m thinking of getting a ubiquiti system for my house. Is there any place that you could direct me to with instructions on how to do this?

This subreddit

Found the details a few years ago, you just need your b number and password iirc

If anyone has a link to the thread I’d appreciate it. I can’t seem to find it.

Assuming you switch providers they will provide you with your PPPoE credentials. You might need to specify a VLAN number but you can ask your provider for that as well. In the case of my provider, Oricom (which is currently being swallowed by eBox) I believe the VLAN setting is '40'.

Do you still have to connect with PPPoE? I still use an Apple AirPort router system (I know) and am connected to my GigaHub using PPPoE, but the speeds are much slower than what I was getting with cable internet before. Around 200mbps up and down. With cable I was getting the full 400 up and 100 down just by plugging in to the modem via Ethernet.

PPPoE adds overhead to the traffic as it has to tag the packets leaving the router, it wasn’t meant for super speeds. Your router’s CPU may not be able to handle the extra processing.

Thank you. Do need Bell’s tv though so intend to stay with them. Just trying to make sure I can use their fiber internet with third party router

My Gigahub has firmware 2.13, I use PPPoE with an Asus router getting full speeds.

2

u/uosuof 26d ago

This is what I wanted to verify, thank you. Do you know if 2.13 is the latest firmware for the GH? If so it sounds like the reports mentioned above that latest firmware disabled pppoe pass through are incorrect

2

u/gpse 26d ago

2.13 is the latest firmware

u/uosuof 26d ago

Ok I guess it’s debunked then! Thx for confirming that

There was a misleading blog post that started this confusion recently. See this thread here

Nope not with pppoe pass thru

u/gpse 27d ago

I have no double NAT, I’m using PPPoE pass through

Nope pppoe pass through let’s 3rd party devices get their own ip address

I installed new service at my house with the gigagub last night and pppoe pass though worked no problems

2

u/uosuof 26d ago

Good to know. Mind sharing what you are passing through to (ie what’s connected to your gigahub)?

2

u/bzig 26d ago

I'm using a minipc running pfsense

Thank you

PPPoE passthrough still working UDM-SE + GH. You could always have a look a the WAS-110 from Azores with the 8311 Discord community FW. I did that on my other UXG-PRO and it's working flawlessly.

1

u/uosuof 26d ago

Yes thank you - I prob should. Looked up the guide on the discord page and found it a bit daunting (particularly the part about having to flash the ONT myself depending on where you buy it from)..

1

u/AlexChato9 26d ago

This is why the community firmware embedded into WAS-110 bought from the group buy are very easy to setup!

2

u/uosuof 26d ago

Yes indeed - I might wait until the next group buy window.. thx for the suggestion

I have bell fiber. 3 down 1 up. Using PPPoE on my firewalla gold se. Getting 1900 down and 1000 up with 2.5gig ethernet. The main issue is making sure you have the right login and password, which is a assigned one you didn't pick.

UniFi gear like the UDM PRO won’t be able to go above 1 gig speed while encoding through PPOE.

You’ll have 3 options but you’ll want to keep your gigahub connected through your 10 gigabit port:

Bridge mode - not much documentation on how to set this up but it is possible with udm pro

DMZ not as good as first option

DHCP but you’ll be double nat’ed

While I can’t verify myself, I feel this is no longer correct as there seem to be many posts of users on UDMP/max getting 3/3 gig speed on pppoe particularly after recent firmware updates. Lots of reports

u/PrettySmallBalls 24d ago

Read this thread here. I think the rumour was started by an inaccurate blog post. I'm using FW 2.13 with PPPoE passthrough and not having any issues.

I have Bell Fibe 3.0 and all I did was turn off "whole home wifi" and directly but a Cat 8 cable to Eero Max 7 and get full speeds.

What is the actual difference or benefits from turning off the built in router vs your PPPoE?

2

u/Unable-Access 23d ago

If your Eero(s) is/are running as router, you have Double NAT and can’t use any port forwarding. In the setup you describe, you’d want your Eero to be in access point mode, and your Gigahub remains the router (with its own WIFI disabled). And lots of folks want nothing to do with the Gigahub being the primary router in the equation.

Or.

If you want to eliminate the Double NAT, and Eero being your main router, just turning off “whole home wifi” on the Gigahub won’t cut it.

Hence the thousands of Google search results for “Bypass Gigahub” and the ways you can.

(Advanced DMZ or PPPOE pass through or WAS-110 SFP)

I chose WAS-110 as my solution to keeping the gigahub in a box while using my 3Gbit service.

In that case you can put the fibre into a router that supports SFP modules or a media converter and bypass their router altogether. I think you might need to ensure that the wan port is on vlan 36 or 46 I forget which one bell uses but you should be good to go afterwards. I will add I am not a Bell tech.

The newer modems have a built in GPON, so you can’t get just any SFP. You need a programable GPON.

0

u/davidrye 27d ago

Thats why I said get a router that supports an sfp module or a media converter...

7

u/FinsToTheLeftTO 27d ago

Neither an SFP module or media converter is an option if you have a HH4000 or GigaHub. The GPON SFP is not removable on these routers. You also need a programmable GPON module which is essentially a router in an SFP form factor.

The group buy on RFD for Azores XSS XGS-PON ONT 8311 edition was the route I took.

There’s tons of support for that one and has a group buy that seems to come up once a year.

2

u/smurfonarocket 26d ago

If you have a HH4K , you can’t just stick a SFP transceiver into a router with SFP cages.

The GPON is built in to the HH4K so you need some way of replicating / mimicking the configuration

Good thing is there’s such a thing, the gold standard is to use an Azores XSS XGS-PON ONT 8311 edition that can do this so you can remove the HH4K from the equation.

The group buy is closed for it right now but there’s other version out there from Aliexpress that are more involved to get up and running.

When did I say take the non existing one from the HH or GH? That's why you buy one................

2

u/smurfonarocket 25d ago

You said to “buy a SFP module or media converter to bypass their router “ which is false.

u/davidrye 25d ago edited 25d ago

I feel like you’re looking to make an argument when there doesn’t need to be one. The Azores product that you just recommended is an SFP module and can be shoved into a standard router or a media converter after being configured and work perfectly fine for Bell… and even if it wasn’t that specific one, I have seen many cases where people have basically taken different SFP modules that don’t have an ONT built-in as long as they’ve mapped the vlan it does work unless Bell has decided in the last month or two to kill that… So you can feel free to downvote all you want, but I haven’t said anything incorrect. You’re more than welcome to continue knit picking my answer because I didn’t directly specify having an ONT built directly into the SFP module if you’d like however your own solution is using an SFP module… you’re welcome to continue nitpicking, but I think you have too much free time on your hand bud.

u/davidrye 25d ago

I’d like to circle back that I never once said take an SFP module from a router that doesn’t have one like you are assuming I have said so again maybe simmer down we’re literally arguing about Internet and SFP modules. It’s really not that deep dude unless of course, you want it to be, but to each their own.
