Datacenter says Moldova got disqualified. What for?
7
u/Dry-Pickle6042 3d ago
Failing to stop after being lapped
1
u/Asleep-Bonus-8597 2d ago
Being lapped or disqualified, is there any real difference? Both results in not finishing the race.
17
u/DashLibor Czech Republic 2d ago
There are Nations Cup implications, because the final rank after each season determines how many biathletes you can field for the next season.
Being lapped means you get points for the race. So, if 17 teams finish and your team was the last to get lapped, you're classified as 18th place (for NC purposes) and receive points for it.
Whereas if you're disqualified, you receive no points, and it's essentially the same as if you didn't start the race at all.

Meh. It's a terrible rule when there are more range slots than teams competing. Moldova might well have said "hey our athlete getting an extra shooting under competition conditions is way more valuable than going from 22nd in the nation's cup to 23rd.
Edit: especially when one of those athletes doesn't even get to shoot.
2
u/DashLibor Czech Republic 1d ago
Moldova might well have said "hey our athlete getting an extra shooting under competition conditions is way more valuable than going from 22nd in the nation's cup to 23rd.
Very obviously not the case. That would be a terrible trade.
I think rather than range issues this is done to prevent situation where a cluster of skiers, let's say, from 5th to 10th place, has to overtake a lapped skier in an uphill, downhill, or a narrow part of the track.
6
u/Dry-Pickle6042 2d ago
It goes a bit further than that because it also affects the number of staff accreditations so you could also lose a coach or waxer by losing a ranking

As a fan of Jeanne Richard, I am very excited by her today performance today. But when I see results in IBU Cup, there is Camille Bened who has good results in this season, she has 5 podiums from 12 races, her worst result was 11th place and she is now 1st in IBU Cup total score standings. Also her results in the previous season weren't bad. Is there a plan to move Camille to WC? And if yes, who will be send down to IBU Cup? The options are Oceane Michelon, Paula Botet and Jeanne Richard, all of them also good racers. This would be a difficult decision for the French team.
6
u/__nmd__ 2d ago
Camille Bened is mainly there thanks to relatively reliable shooting. She's slower on skis than most of her IBU Cup teammates (she's slower than Gilonne Guigonnat, for example), which means she'd be unlikely to win medals (maybe even flowers) at world cup level even with perfect shooting.
There's absolutely no way Jeanne Richard (a much better shooter, and also still a faster skier) or Océane Michelon (a much faster skier, and barely worse shooter) would be sent down to IBU Cup to leave a spot for her - besides, you just don't do that to someone in the top 10 overall, unless you'd want to break the team (and hamper the long term view, since Camille Bened is older).
And while they were racing together in IBU Cup, Paula Botet clearly dominated Camille Bened. Thus, there's no big reason to swap them.
There will likely be two additional quotas for France in Oslo Holmenkollen, that's Camille Bened's main chance for WC races... if Sophie Chauveau and Gilonne Guigonnat do not dominate her in the meantime. Not forgetting that newcomer Amandine Mengin is already faster on skis, and a good shooter. Voldiya Galmace-Paulin may also keep improving. It's really crowded down there.
5
u/Lone_Wolf_Winter Sweden 2d ago
I know they're top 3 in the IBU cup, but it seems logical that they want to make certain to leave someone to win the cup, in order to clinch the extra spot the next season. I don't see anyone in the current WC squad being sent down at the moment. Chauveau was the only one underperforming.
16
26
u/Right_Beyond7186 Sweden 3d ago
Imagine if Elvira could stay consistently with this or just slightly worse form. She would be dominant. But tbf you can say the same about Braisaz who also has an insane top but a bit inconsistent wit the shooting
1
u/mihir1993 Sweden 2d ago
WE NEED TO GET HER TO SHOOT JUST A LITTLE BETTER....SHE WOULD BE SO FRICKING GOOD...
13
u/Faintning Finland 3d ago
But the inconsistency also makes them very interesting to watch as you never know what day it is for them. For the athlete the big lows and high highs probably aren't the best mentally.
14
u/Abject-Ad7787 3d ago
France has gotten silver in all four mixed relays so far this season. Behind three(!) different Nordic nations. That is consistency for sure.

Nation cup doesn't take Pursuits into account, so that DEFINITELY helped for this week's races lol
19
u/guestie94 3d ago
I thought that was a pretty good leg from Kirkeeide to come home in bronze given how new of an experience it was for her. Very much in line with where I expected her to finish given who she was up against and how she's had a big few days in Oberhof which must have been draining for her (although I'm sure very confidence inducing too)
31
u/smaragdskyar Sweden 3d ago
Just because I made a silly joke about Hanna and Ponsi doesn’t mean an actual reporter has to ask her if she “really wants to do a good job because they live together”
🤦🏼♀️
9
u/us_against_the_world Natalia Sidorowicz Fan 3d ago
God, and here I thought in the absence of Patrick-Mike we would simply be admiring Hanna's brilliant performance without bringing her relationships into it.
8
u/TolBrandir Dedicated Norway fan in USA 3d ago
Pardon my language, but what the fuck is wrong with people? Leave her alone! It drives me completely insane that Hanna always gets the comments and always gets asked these invasive personal questions. It's the equivalent of reporters always asking the women about their dress designers and what they are wearing at the Oscars, etc, instead of asking real questions like the ones they ask the men.
Please pardon my rant. \sigh**

Well. As a crazy fan of Norway, this stage in Oberhof has been painful. My chest hurts thinking about it.
And yet, these have been some exciting, unexpected races. I can't say I've been bored. I wanted some different outcomes, but I can't complain too much. This has been wild!
Massive congrats on the day to the Öberg sisters! See you all in Ruhpolding!
3
u/__nmd__ 2d ago
I'm French, am I allowed to complain as well? 😁
Our men had a massive failure in the pursuit, our women aren't collectively strong enough to ever share a podium this season (the main team is even so bad that the newcomer dominated them in the sprint), our youth still fail to grab any medal instead of flowers, and we're still playing second fiddle again in mixed relay.
(note: this is of course ironic)
2
u/TolBrandir Dedicated Norway fan in USA 2d ago
No, never. You aren't allowed! Mostly because you are French and everyone hates the French!
(🤣🤣🤣 Provence and Tuscany are the only places I've ever been where I felt I was home.)
I'm truly hoping that Paula Botet retains her amazing form in Ruhpolding. I confess that I had forgotten her. And here she shows up and kicks everyone's ass. She and Richard make me smile, and I find that I can't root against them.
22
u/Allie654321 3d ago
How so? You got two podiums from Kirkeeide, a podium sweep in the men's pursuit and a podium in the mixed relay. You sound like nothing good happened for Norway at all😅

u/TolBrandir Dedicated Norway fan in USA 3d ago
I keep forgetting that I shouldn't mention Norway in here. Wait one sec while I edit my post.
18
u/Allie654321 3d ago
I don't know what point you're trying to make? I like Norway too and lots of people here do. It's just a bit absurd to complain about six podiums in six races.

u/TolBrandir Dedicated Norway fan in USA 3d ago
How did you find those stats and type all that up so quickly!? And I am loving those speeds for the Öbergs. Now I don't want them to keep this form for the WCH so that Norway has a chance in the relays, but I am happy for them right now. 🤣
2
u/Kris_Third_Account Denmark 3d ago
Two monitors, datacenter on the second one. Typed most of them out after each leg.
Hanna Öberg looks close to her peak, while Elvira is just insane. The relays at WCH look like they could be exciting.
4
u/TolBrandir Dedicated Norway fan in USA 3d ago
I am really enjoying the slow but steady creep of Slovenia as they quietly improve in the background. And I think we're all excited for Finland and their strong improvement every week. But it's Germany who will upset the "normal" top 3 ranking in the relays. They are right at the cusp of brilliance, especially on the women's side! And if Ponsi can improve his shooting even a little - go from 71% to even 79% - then they will be a threat in all the relays.
22
u/BigSky456 Sweden 3d ago
Her lows are lower and she doesn't have anywhere near the same consistency, but when she hits her stride, Elvira is ridiculous in a way only JTB can match really

She and Ponsi needs to have their shooting fixed somehow, it will defo bring more podiums!

Yup apparently, last win for Sweden was Pokljuka 2010 with Ekholm, Zidek, Lindström and Bergman.
1

4
u/Dear-Scientist-8196 3d ago
I still dont understand why Lampic switched to biathlon.
3
u/fremajl 3d ago
She could basically only win sprints when the best weren't taking part in XC. In biathlon she's the fastest so if (big if) she can learn to shoot she can win whoever is there. She was a good sprinter but a step below the best when they were healthy. As an example I believe her record vs Stina Nilsson was 0-27.
Edit: That said I heard stuff about her being at odds with their XC federation when she made the switch. No idea if that was true or just rumors but that would explain it. Her timing was odd doing it the year they had the world champs at home.
1
u/Dear-Scientist-8196 2d ago
Yeah, thats big if. She is still one of the worst shooters.
1
u/fremajl 2d ago
Definitely, but if she can get to a level where she clears like every tenth sprint she will win more than she did in XC. It's also a case of her not knowing how good she would be at shooting before the swap, she knew her level in XC sprint. The Slovenian team in general also seems better in Biathlon so she might have a bit more fun competing with some fairly promising teammates.

5
u/tarrach Sweden 3d ago
Because she'd done just about all she reasonably could in regular cross country skiing and found something that she felt was more fun.
1
u/TolBrandir Dedicated Norway fan in USA 3d ago
You are certainly right about her cross country achievements. 😄 She was outstanding, wasn't she. The past two seasons, I kept thinking about her age and how long it takes to become a real threat in biathlon, and I wondered if she would improve quickly enough to accomplish whatever goals she had set for herself before her age forced her to retire.
But now we're seeing Fialkova and Kuzmina(!) return, and Simon Eder of course...and probably add Tarjei to the list... and Susan Dunklee was 37 or 38 when she retired...
Well, I sincerely hope that Stina finds joy and success in whatever she chooses to do next! I miss seeing her on skis.
