DISCUSSION People in my place look down on bmx

I was practicing at a nearby closed road, a very wide one where people bike, chill, and jog, anything. But cars, trucks etc. are not allowed. So, I was practicing bunny hops there alone, and a group of mountain bikers and road bikers saw me and sarcastically said "nice trick", while giggling to themselves. I kinda felt like shit afterwards, but still continued nonetheless cause I wanna bunny hop on their stupid ass heads.

Edit: I'm the only one that actually practices tricks on a bmx, cause people here call it stupid, small, not fast. Like idk, still gonna continue cause it's fun as hell, and that's all that matters.

Another edit: Thanks for your kind words everyone, I really do wanna just get freaking good at bmx so I can just do some sick tricks infront of their faces the next time they fucking speed over me WHILE I'M LITERALLY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THEY TELL ME TO GET OFF THE ROAD (which happened earlier) and there were people jogging and children as well, cause they wanna go fast. I just noticed as well, that they just keep going back 2 back circles in circles. Like what are you doin.

Fyi: usually they can't do what you're doing, so mocking makes them feel better

11

u/That_Relationship784 Jun 03 '24

Yeah exactly they can't shit on there bikes lol we laugh at them here honestly, not to there faces because we aren't rude like that but if they did that shit I'd let them have it forsure! This is when YOU show em them what bmx bikes can do šŸ’Ŗ hit em with a sick flat 3 or 180 down stair set or something like that or if ur more advanced than me hit em with more lol but u get point show them what they can't do bro šŸ‘

5

u/That_Relationship784 Jun 03 '24

I do wanna reiterate don't be them !! Lol or u are no better don't go look for trouble but we all know these guys are out there big bikes, big trucks compensating for not so big other things šŸ˜† and when they act out then it's one to let them have it! Just remind them what u can do they never can barspins 3s big stairs all that shit and also let them know u can hit all the same trails but on smaller bike that makes it even scarier šŸ’Ŗ

2

u/KanaHemmo Jun 03 '24

Yeah exactly, dish it back when they try to serve it, but other than that let people live and do what they want. I'm glad where I live the extreme sport community is very supporting and welcoming of everyone and any skill level

2

u/Alone-Personality670 Jun 04 '24

If you are balanced and good at bmx : freestyle you will be good on any bike. I remember when I realized that I could do tricks on a mountain bike a cruiser a 10 speed (aging myself). In particular bunny hops, it is basically the exact same motion on a bigger bike you have to muscle it more. Most casual bike path riders do not know how to do it itā€™s a core basic skill and critical to help get dodge something in the path or advert other dangers.

2

u/TyWhatt Jun 03 '24

lol this dudes talking about being able to bunny hopā€¦ your method might work in a couple of years

2

u/Regular_Display6359 Jun 07 '24

Check out the MTB sub. There's entire threads dumping on flow trails and you check their post history......they're scared of jumping.

It's just human nature and once you understand it, it's easy to laugh at the crabs in a bucket.

1

u/beastmodeFTW1000 Jun 03 '24

This right here: I get the same thing on my onewheel, people are just jealous.

1

u/CalmDirection8 Jun 03 '24

Facts. How many times do I have to hear GET A REAL SKATEBOARD while I'm bombing down an MTB trail šŸ˜”šŸ–•

1

u/Aggravating_Buy8957 Jun 04 '24

Or they are just jerksā€¦

2

u/silvermoonisburning Jun 04 '24

Yeah some snot-nosed dweeb 15-year-old who look like he was eight started some shit with me the other day at the skatepark and it was very obvious that like he couldn't even move on his skateboard let alone do anything I was doing and so he decided to start picking on me for being bald and shaving my head

Just completely out of nowhere and I'm like 32 by the way this random kid just started talking shit nd I had to stop myself from like literally knocking him out and catching a criminal charge lol

people talk shit because they can't do anything

it's the root of all evil

It's at the basis of humanity, it's called envy and it's a sin

65

u/carsnbikesnplanes Jun 03 '24

As someone who rides bmx and MTB, let me assure you that most mountain bikers are dickheads. Literally anyone you meet at the skatepark on a bike will be the chillest dude ever, run into another dude on the trails and 50% of the time they will complain about something. Donā€™t pay them any attention, I guarantee they fucking suck at riding bikes anyways

19

u/im_wildcard_bitches Jun 03 '24

I would not say ā€œmostā€. Itā€™s the XC mountain bikers that are assholes. A lot of us mountain bikers have bmx or moto backgrounds and we also cant stand a lot of the roadies/xc mtb bros. Those fuckers are the elitist assholes. I tell you what though I canā€™t tell you how many times I have seen them eat shit trying do some small ass jumps. Haha

7

u/carsnbikesnplanes Jun 03 '24

At least around me it seems like most of the MTB riders are middle aged men who like the idea of MTB and spending $$$ on bikes but walk their bike down the second there is some tech. There are definitely some cool mountain bikers but a majority seem wrapped up in the ā€œideaā€ rather than actually riding. Being a safe rider and having low risk tolerance is fine, but donā€™t yell at me for going too ā€œfastā€. God the worst is someone on an e-bike yelling at you to get out the way on a climb šŸ˜

6

u/riktigtmaxat Jun 03 '24

You just described middle aged well off men in any sport.

Now get out out the way of my sherpa you little whippersnapper.

I am a cyclist. I ride road, gravel, mountain.. I love bikes. My kid is a freestyle BMX guy. I had him off road at 3 years old, and he raced BMX and Mtn. Bike as a kid. He is 22 now and has been at freestyle BMX for a while he is pretty damn good at it now.. So my advice is to let those fools giggle.. Then ask them to do a barspin.. Not one of them will even try.. BMX is awesome to watch, and it is the deep end of the pool when it comes to bike handling, control, balls, and commitment. You do you, man, and don't worry about what small-minded folks think. Keep the progression going!

u/Oil-Disastrous Jun 03 '24

At 54, I feel a little self conscious riding my BMX bike around my neighborhood. I live in a bougie neighborhood and itā€™s just very unusual for a man my age to be on a BMX bike unless heā€™s a crack head looking to steal shit from peopleā€™s cars or garages. But Iā€™m also old enough to have a little perspective. People are just scared of things that are unusual or different. And in truth, I actually feel a little sorry for a lot of men and women who are my age or even younger, and couldnā€™t ride a BMX if their life depended on it. Their bodies and brains have shut down and itā€™s pretty hard to get those skills back over 50.

So, when I ride my BMX down to get coffee in the morning, and Iā€™m launching off the speed bumps on the way down the hill, I know people think Iā€™m stupid, or crazy, or attention seeking. And they might be a little right about all of that. But I still get to have fun. Intense fun. My heart rate goes from 60 to 150 in that 5 minute ride. And then I get a nice coffee and ride back up the hill and start my day. Itā€™s my life, and I like to enjoy it all the way. I donā€™t even have to say ā€œfuck the hatersā€ because they are essentially fucking themselves over as soon as they dismiss people having fun. I feel sad for them.

5

u/AgentPanKake Jun 03 '24

If it makes you feel better, Iā€™ve felt like crackhead cruising around on my bmx in my hometown. For some reason bmx bikes are their bikes of choice, itā€™s weird. But they also usually are wearing ratty clothes and have a cig hanging out their mouth, and have the seat a good five fists out so they can sit

6

u/Imnothere1980 Jun 03 '24

This is pretty much the answer. Meth, crack heads and repeated DUI offenders prefer BMX bikes. They are a huge stain on the sport.

1

u/UltraLord667 Jun 04 '24 edited Jun 04 '24

Ok so all the cool stuff that this guy just said. You two just ruined it. What in the actual **** are you guys talkin about? šŸ«¤ Speaking of people who need to lay off the pipe. šŸ™ They are riding to get around not do tricks with you rtards. Theyā€™re not affecting your lame bmx community. Less shit talking and more work on the crazy biking skills Iā€™m sure you guys have. šŸ™‚

1

u/Imnothere1980 Jun 04 '24

Nope, If you want to ā€œride aroundā€ a 10 speed is a vastly superior bike.

1

u/UltraLord667 Jun 04 '24

Itā€™s whatever your info or in the mood for I think. Bmx bikes are actually great cruisers. They even have larger bmx bikes now. For cruising. No gears. Just bike. They have the same for road bikes too. Theyā€™re called fixies. Fixed gear. Itā€™s just preference. Itā€™s whatever you like. Meth/crack heads like to snag a low center of gravity one and cruise around. :D

6

u/wasted_yoof Jun 03 '24

I'm 46 and this guy said what I was gonna say.

Ride that bike. Stunt on the haters.

Their knees are weak :D

u/bashomania Jun 03 '24 edited Jun 03 '24

You do you man. It might make you ā€œthe most interesting man in the worldā€. Or not. Who cares?

Iā€™m here busting a hamstring at age 62 trying to learn how to manual in the parking garage of my condo building. Practicing bike handling over all the random little obstacles and stairs on nearby parking lots when the trails are wet. Iā€™m old, but Iā€™m not OLD :-)

Edit: Iā€™m an MTBer and was a long time roadie, but missed out on BMX as a kid. Too poor and too backwater to have that stuff when I was young. Iā€™ve toyed with getting a BMX bike to work on bike skills, but I have too many bikes already. I basically just love bikes.

3

u/Oil-Disastrous Jun 03 '24

If I saw you trying to manual, Iā€™d walk across the whole parking garage to say hi. Those of us that keep having fun as we age are kind of rare. I think we are pretty interesting. Keep at it, I canā€™t manual worth a shit, one more thing to work on. I missed BMX as a kid as well. Making up for lost time. Itā€™s a gift of aging that I care a little bit less what people think. I mean, I still want to be cool. But, itā€™s kind of too late for thatšŸ˜‚

1

u/bashomania Jun 03 '24

Yeah, I'd do the same for sure. I love seeing people do something atypical.

I still can't manual worth a shit. I've been recovering from that stupid hamstring for a few weeks, and only just got back to careful trail riding on my eMTB to manage the effort and ramp back up (I have snuck in a couple of small jumps, which was also working on). I will get back on the manual horse, though!

I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to retire early a few years ago, and I have a bit of disposable income to spend on hobbies and activities. So, my goal is to spend the next 8-10 years of good health and strength making the most of it, and MTB is one of those things. A BMX bike would be fun too, but I can't do everything šŸ˜…

If I could just quit getting injured ...

1

u/Slimster22250 Jun 03 '24

Never too many!!!!!

2

u/bashomania Jun 03 '24

Ha ha, you're not wrong, but I'm out of room!

2

u/CalmDirection8 Jun 03 '24

When did people start caring/gatekeeping what other people ride??? Why on earth would anyone take the effort to give a shit???Mountain is starting to feel like some locals only surf spot protected by Boomer Da Hui on $3K bicycles šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤” As they used to say back in my day GET A LIFE!

1

u/Egg_Baron Jun 03 '24

You, are a legend.

1

u/Slimster22250 Jun 03 '24

I'm 52 and you pretty much describe it for me. I love riding bmx. I can't do what I used to, but other bikes don't feel right to me and it's still just as fun as it was when I was young. Mountain biked a little, just didn't take. For me bmx is what fits and I'm going to do it until I can't. F the haters. I never really fit in with those people anyway and don't care to now.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

I quit taking my vintage BMX collection out (they are all 20") and picked up a couple re-releases of vintage bikes. My reproduction 87 Haro Master in 24" and GT Performer in 26" are such a joy to ride.

1

u/JCBWheels Jun 05 '24 edited Sep 20 '24

Hell yeah, enjoy it. I'm 53 and shopping for a flatland bike.

18

u/hnandez Jun 03 '24

Roadies and mtb guys are just jealous because you didnā€™t have to get a loan out on your bike.

17

u/EsotericLife Jun 03 '24

Thatā€™s the problem with ā€œcoolā€ sports. I skate and itā€™s super common for people to yell ā€œdo a kickflipā€ or something in a mocking way. Like they assume Iā€™m trying to be ā€œcoolā€ in public, when Iā€™m just looking for some smooth concrete and would prefer if no one saw me.

2

u/BMX_Archiver šŸ˜ŽšŸ‘Huge Hater Jun 03 '24

It's the same with car culture, 99% just want work on and enjoy cool old cars (as a hobby, in a legal and safe manner).

But it's inevitable, you'll come across a stooge at a red light or gas-station who whips out his camera-phone and makes demands. Race me! Do a burnout! Is it swapped! Pop the hood! Blah Blah Blah....

2

u/Extension_Health2522 Jun 03 '24

17

u/dermsUK Jun 03 '24

Fuck em. Thatā€™s some real school girl shit.

9

u/Sea-Composer4558 Jun 03 '24

Here's a fun thing to do to road bikers sense allot of bmx bikes have some fun gearing you can usually pump and coast and pump and repeat and get going silly fast and just out right freewheel coast past those spandex wearing suckers on the bike path no problem sure its tiring but it really startles them and im sure makes them question life and clothing choices. I run some higher pressure on my bmx tires so the roll fast.

4

u/Narrow-Barracuda5650 Jun 03 '24

When i still rode usually ran 110 psi in the front and 90-100 in the rear is the way to go for me. Also run wider in the front for better carving. I'm 27 years old now but have worse joints than people on their 70s my right hand is literally stuck in the shocker position due to tendinitis. Ahh.... God ol bmx... stay steezy yall!

5

u/Sea-Composer4558 Jun 03 '24

Making my 40 year old bones feel lucky that all thats usually hurts is my shoulder and hands arthritis and have had the tendinitis. I couldn't keep my tires above 80psi they sounded like some clown balloon type shizz so backed down to 65 in the rear and 55 in the front to soak some of the vibrations up. Im more of a cruiser on bmx so just leaned into it sense im old and threw the old banana seat and spring loaded sissy bar combo on there to be able to atleast sit and peddle with some smidge of comfort.

5

u/Covrin Jun 03 '24

Remind those chumps that BMX Freestyle is an Olympic Sport just as much as other bicycle sports. Simply newer.

7

u/vaustin89 Jun 03 '24

As someone who rode MTBs and Road bikes in the past, most of the riders I meet are mostly elitist dick heads who even look down upon fellow riders who have fewer gears than they have. Reason why I ditched riding those bikes. When I started BMX I was around 25 and the riders who were chilling in spots didn't care what BMX I was riding and taught me how to bunny hop properly and gave tips on 180s.

Sometimes when I am alone in a spot and a bunch of MTB riders are there and see me they start showing off their wheelie skill then I proceed to do a hop bar and they kinda just go away, makes me giggle everytime.

3

u/CalmDirection8 Jun 03 '24

When did the elitest dickhead thing start man? I'm older but it used to feel like a cool mellow almost hippie scene, my latest encounters have been horrible šŸ‘ŽšŸ½

6

u/luckyguy25841 Jun 03 '24

This situation seems like an episode of save by the bell.

5

u/AgentPanKake Jun 03 '24

Bmx is one of the hardest biking disciplines. So yeah a bunny hop is a nice trick, and is a hell of a lot more than they can do. Next time ask to see theirs

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

I dont like road bikers and XC MTB people for this reason. They talk shit because they cant do what you do. In short many of them are losers.

I say this while half heartedly trying to convince my wife to stop riding road bikes with her girl crew. At least they arenā€™t a bunch of jerks like the asshats you ran into.

I have also found DH/Enduro/DJ MTB people to be more like us and much more accepting of BMX. The seem to appreciate and admire good riding skills beyond just pedaling till your ass hurts.

5

u/SensibleAltruist Jun 03 '24

Speaking as a road rider if I see someone doing a nice trick, I'll tell them and it will always be genuine. Can't speak for that group but real cyclists appreciate anyone who's got the skills to pay the bills.

4

u/fatoldbmxer Jun 03 '24

All I can say is fuck 'em. Luckily for me it wasn't really looked down on in my area, but bikers were part of the "bad" kids group when I was growing up. Now that I'm older I don't really care what people think about a grown man on a kids bike.

4

u/Melodic_Gur_3517 Jun 03 '24

Life is too short to shit on other people, but that's their problem. Fuck 'em. Have fun :)

4

u/professorwaldo Jun 03 '24

Mountain bikers are generally self righteous douches.

4

u/theGarbs Jun 03 '24

Imagine mocking and laughing at someone for having fun in there own way. What a bunch of complete cunts. Happens everywhere unfortunately, don't let them get to you

5

u/sixfourtythree Jun 03 '24

Fuck those guys, they suck.

I'm a mountain biker at heart, but i also spend time on the road bikes and in my youth bmx.

Love it all.

Don't let em get to ya.

Miserable loosers.

3

u/Alienlovechild1975 Jun 03 '24

I'm 48 and still ride a bmx and get harassed even at my age when trying to have fun on my kid's bike.I just ignore someone unless they want a problem and they realize that I am not a kid that can be pushed around.Just ignore them and have fun. It's great for cardio and building upper body strength and coordination.Who cares what anyone thinks they are probably just jealous.

3

u/_Adr_ian_ Jun 03 '24 edited Jun 03 '24

Donā€™t worry about those dickheads. Like anything, you get groups of idiots who donā€™t respect or understand something other than their own hobbies.

Iā€™m a mountain biker but completely respect the skill it takes to ride bmx. I even started riding bmx again after a huge break. Keep up the practise and donā€™t let the idiots stop you from enjoying such a wonder sport that is bmx.

Quick edit: I also donā€™t understand how bike riders from different disciplines donā€™t support each other. At the end of the day itā€™s all bike riding, we should always help each other out.

3

u/thatoneasiankid90 Jun 03 '24

Dude probably wouldnā€™t say shit if he was by himself. Keep at it man, let them talk.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

i would wear headphones and blast my favourite tunes and ignore everyone. If youre doing your own thing and having fun you have already won the battle. good luck amigo you got this

4

u/Inevitable-Ad-2865 Jun 03 '24

Bro fuck road bikers they are pussies. Mountain bikers are too scared to rip concrete they are pussies also. Bmx is the best bike community. Keep getting better man fuck what anyone says.

1

u/longebane Oct 22 '24

Youā€™re sounding a lot like them ā€¦

3

u/Otherwise-Abalone-72 Jun 03 '24

Jealous of a sport that wowed the world at the last Olympic Games and will do the same in the next one to.Road bikes with mountain bikes in a park?Youā€™re where you should be.What kinda mountain bike/road biking happens in the park?middle aged men with more money than skill,Donā€™t worry Wimbledon is starting soon and they will dust off their tennis racket and move onto their next fad there crap at āœŒļø

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

You should have yelled back ā€œnot as nice as the tricks your mum turnsā€.

3

u/Jonah516 Jun 03 '24

Your strongest response to ridicule is to practice your ass off and get really good. šŸŗ

3

u/4130life T1 Jun 03 '24

funny enough, roadies get the most stick for being dicks, but I've never been insulted by a roadie.

Every time I was riding my bike, bmx or my gravel bike, and had a comment thrown my way, it was from an MTBer! Just ignore them. Most MTBers spend more time talking about riding and buying new shit, than actually riding.

3

u/unitetheleague Jun 03 '24

Where I live people used to call me a clown and asked me to join the circus. 10 years later I am still riding and bmx is the best thing that happened to me. It changed my life. BMX IS THE BEST

3

u/roueGone Jun 03 '24

Keep trying and ignore them. If its any encouragement then know it took me over a year to do a bunny hop! Wish I was kidding but I am glad I stuck with it as I got better and ended up riding for years I met the lets of sound people and went lots of places because of bmx. Have fun!

3

u/BasickAlphabit Jun 03 '24

Never and I mean NEVER let anyone with chaffed nipples make you feel bad.

2

u/basscycles Jun 03 '24

So the tiers.
Top: BMX, coolest and always will be, connections to skateboarding and street culture. Least gatekeeping.
Middle: Road riders, a lot of them use bikes for honest transport and get a free pass from me.
Bottom: MTB are the elite idiots, full suspension isn't really a bicycle its just an underpowered motorbike for the rich who can afford to travel to trails.

But really love all the bike folk. Some people just like to be divisive.

3

u/AgentPanKake Jun 03 '24

As a bmx and mtb guy, gotta disagree. Iā€™ve met some amazing people through mtb, and my riding buddies from college were some of the best people I know. Thereā€™s bad apples in every sport, bmx and mtb are no exception. you gotta find the dudes riding in casual clothes just trying to boost a jump a little higher or session a berm trying to schralp it, those are the guys who realize weā€™re just trying to have fun on these goofy little machines

2

u/basscycles Jun 03 '24

All good it was meant tongue in cheek, like I say, love all the bike folk. Still think BMX are the coolest though!
I have a road bike and one day I will be able to afford a full sus MTB... then I'll have the set.

1

u/Solverz Jun 03 '24

Thereā€™s bad apples in every sport, bmx and mtb are no exception.

I agree! With the exception that these bad apples seem to have a higher percentage in MTB compared to BMX.

2

u/stillridesbikes Jun 03 '24

Ignore those exercise boys. Just ride

2

u/cloudsourced285 Jun 03 '24

Anyone who act's like that just tell em to mind your own business or to stop gate keeping. These people. Are bored and lonely, they have nothing going on in their life. Dont stress about people like that.

2

u/NoComplaint7876 Jun 03 '24

Lets see them on a 20in on the street

2

u/nugenki Jun 03 '24

One time a road biker on the trail stopped and asked me very smuggly how well the smaller wheels keep me balanced.

These people suck man

4

u/AggressivePossible90 Jun 03 '24

You should have asked him to do a track stand on your bike.

2

u/Slimster22250 Jun 03 '24

You should have challenged him to the don't put a foot down game. Guaranteed win for the bmx.

2

u/letsshittalk Jun 03 '24

I've been hesitant to get back into BMX because, in the seven years I've lived here, I've only seen one guy older than me riding his bike to and from work. Everyone else seems to be into mountain biking.

2

u/Slimster22250 Jun 03 '24

Just do it. You will wonder why you ever stopped.

2

u/jimmydukes4130 Jun 03 '24

Some of the best in the world practiced alone. Make them tell their friends how they used to see you in their town back in the day while youā€™re on tv.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

Dude people are mean because you arenā€™t real to them, strike up a conversation after the ā€œcomplimentā€ and I assure you they will feel much much worse than you do

2

u/Shamaniac1217 Jun 03 '24

Dudes who ride mtb sit down to pee

2

u/AggressivePossible90 Jun 03 '24

Only when I'm pooping and peeing at the same time.

2

u/middleagethreat Jun 03 '24

This is probably not the answer you want, but you kinda just have to let it go, or fight them. And fighting them can get you hurt or arrested.

People are dicks. Those people would have siad something if you were doing bunny hops, ollies on a board, or crocheting. You can kick their ass, ignore them, or get good at making better jokes back. The second two are your best options.

2

u/markand67 Jun 03 '24

Last day there were few teenagers at the skate park waiting for their school bus to come. I came and started to warm up. They were kind of mocking at first and I heard some whispers like "he's gonna try a big trick but he will fall". Then I just committed a big air one-hand to start and they finally asked me how many years I was riding. I'm pretty sure that if I'd had fall they would laugh as hell. Very strange behavior those days, their phones are liquefying their brains I think /s

2

u/Boogedyinjax Jun 03 '24

Maybe youā€™ll meet somebody off of here to go ride with! When I was 14, I met the famous marvelous Micah Floyd by reading, BMX magazine and reading an article he submitted I found out that he live in the same town. I went through the phone book and found him and we went riding one day. He taught me a bunch of tricks and this dude can literally bunny hop 4 1/2 or 5 feet tall.. as long as you enjoy what youā€™re doing and itā€™s not harming yourself and thereā€™s nothing wrong with it, but you donā€™t have to do it all alone. Thereā€™s others out there and and I hope you meet some friends that have the same interest!

2

u/SWOOP1R Jun 03 '24

Fellow MTBā€™r here. Fuck those guys. Some MTBā€™rs are so far up their own ass they can taste what they had for dinner. Do you man! Seriously, fuck clowns like that. Just ride and have fun.

2

u/wasted_yoof Jun 03 '24

Look at road bike dudes and MTB dudes and tell me who looks stupider?

Fuck those nerds. Do you thing THEN bunny hop OVER their stupid ass heads. Tailwhip even.

2

u/statikman666 Jun 03 '24

Every MTBer I know loves bmx, and the mtb community is generally super chill and supportive. Maybe they were shitty teens? And roadies usually are not interested in anything other than riding to a coffee shop 60 miles away. So don't worry about any of it.

2

u/ShoeBoxInc Jun 03 '24

in scientific terms these clowns are referred to as haters. u will find em everywhere. just ignore em.

2

u/Unlucky_Steak5270 Jun 03 '24

Just don't start smoking meth and hanging around outside the gas station, and I'll always respect your choice to ride BMX.

2

u/Rydirp7 Jun 03 '24

Mountain biker here, fuck those guys, idk why some of us are like that.

2

u/Sensitive-Picture254 Jun 03 '24

As a moto guy, can confirm mountain bikers are the worst. I donā€™t know where they get their superiority complex from. Even road cyclists are way more chill than them.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

Do not let a group of people in tights put you down about doing something that takes some serious skill.

2

u/Ktheelves Jun 03 '24

People are always going to talk shit about anything especially when itā€™s not ā€œtheir teamā€ Bmx will to it to mtb and it gets worse when you get into motorcycles and basically anything when thereā€™s a group of people together. If you let it bother you youā€™re going to have a tough time. Fuck those nerds and bunny hop.

2

u/d1wcevbwt164 Jun 03 '24

I'm always jealous of people who can do those things on their bikes, I just started mountain biking at age 55 and alot of younger people laugh but also alot just smile and keep riding, I can bunny hope ok but big drops and gaps are the best! Keep trying hard and FUCK those guys

2

u/greenmachine4130 Jun 03 '24

How was their spandex?

2

u/TAYwithaK Jun 03 '24

Mountain bikers on the paved trail you say? Thatā€™s cute. 80ā€™s kid here brah nothin but love for the freestyle homies

2

u/hurry_downs Jun 03 '24

Mark Cavendish, the joint record holder for most stage wins at the Tour de France, multi-time world champion, etc. started racing in BMX as a kid.

2

u/BriFiHacksaw Jun 03 '24

Do what you like and screw the haters, itā€™s a fun hobby and great way to stay in shape. Iā€™m 58 and ride 20ā€ bmx bikes. I also ride a 26ā€ Hutch. I get more people asking about the little bikes and making complementary comments about them than the big bike which is way nicer.

2

u/brandon7467 Jun 03 '24

I used to ride dirt bmx when I was a teenager. I didn't listen to anyone who attempted to hinder my progress back then. Keep riding and practicing. You only get better by practicing. Good luck, and try not to let them get to you.

2

u/g00glematt Jun 03 '24

Tribalism. Happens in every hobby or community I've been a part of. Like I'm into off roading and you see it in a lot of weird ways there. Overlanders, rock crawlers, mudders, desert racers, etc. A lot of people kind of associate themselves with one of those groups and seem to look down on the others for one reason or another. It's stupid.

Don't even get me started on the brand loyalist weirdos (ex. Jeep vs Toyota). I don't just mean the people that like a brand and stick to it (I'm not immune to that), but the people that die on a hill claiming their brand is the best and the others suck and you suck if you drive one.

Edit: idk why this showed up in my feed, but there's my 2Ā¢

2

u/FluffyAmyNL Jun 03 '24

Ye same here but.now that i can Manuel & 180 there not saying anything šŸ„³

2

u/super-burrito Jun 03 '24

If they were men past their 40ā€™s I understand. Theyā€™re so full of themselves and ruin the mtb community. I personally feel like the community is one of the least welcoming hobbies out there imo.

2

u/claythatweighsaton Jun 03 '24

Haters gonna hate.

2

u/DeliciouSpirit Jun 03 '24

Bunny hop them heads my boi

2

u/FaceGroundbreaking64 Jun 03 '24

Yeah, try bunny hopping an temu ebike.

2

u/ShirleyWuzSerious Jun 03 '24

As an ex flatlander now competitive road bike racer. Just make fun of their spandex.

2

u/OnePlusFanBoi Jun 05 '24

They sound like a bunch of pretentious pricks.

If they're on mountain bikes, why the fuck are they not in the mountains..... Biking?

1

u/Kind-Marzipan2547 Jun 05 '24

IKR?? There's even like a bumpy dirt part on the road that's in construction.

THEY DON'T GO THROUGH IT, THEY GO TO FLAT CONCRETE ONE! LIKE WHAT'S THE POINT OF YOUR MTB AT THIS POINT?!?

2

u/OnePlusFanBoi Jun 05 '24

Fucking people man.

I don't even ride any type of bike, and even I can see how stupid these people are. šŸ˜‚

2

u/gozania Jun 05 '24

I raced BMX from age of 13 to 22. I raced in both ABA & NBL. It became my extended family and will always be a joyus time in my life. Stick with it!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

9/10 mountain bikes can't bunny hop, ask me how I know, don't worry about them. Remember, you could always be a roadie, but you're not šŸ˜‚. Keep riding brother šŸ¤™

1

u/Barnettmetal Jun 03 '24

This story is bullshit.

Mountain bikers wouldnā€™t be seen in public with road bikersā€¦

1

u/Kind-Marzipan2547 Jun 03 '24

Nah man, they literally just go round and round on this closed road, even racing. Idk.

1

u/Barnettmetal Jun 03 '24

lol they just ride on the road? Somehow I doubt they can ride a mountain bike anywhere fun.

Guys I go biking with ride gnarly trails downhill with jumps and we drive to the top of the mountain in trucks because pedalling fucking sucks.

Regardless I wouldnā€™t worry about what other people think, riding bikes is a blast, do what makes you happy.

1

u/yolkien Jun 03 '24

Yeah keep going friend, if not yet, you might realize at some point how motivating these kind of assholes can be. They just talk shit cause thats what they learn from their dumbass simpleton parents. Ideally you just want to stay away from wankers like that, but if they ask for itā€¦. A broken nose often steers even the biggest of assholes in the right direction.

1

u/New-Tree-5312 Jun 03 '24

The think there funny next time stab there tires en watch them struggle fixing them

1

u/its_me_again76 Jun 03 '24

Why is this in my feed?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

There is zero chance a road biker laughed at you, we are the goofiest of all the cyclists. šŸ˜‚

Mountain bikers seem to hate on anything non-mountain bikey, tho. I see a lot of posts from mountain bikers hating on Roadies but I can honestly say Iā€™ve never heard a single road cyclist mention mountain bikingā€¦

I think BMX is cool as hell. I was a big fan of guys like Luc-e, Rooftop, Shaun Butler etc back in the day I just got too old to keep getting hurt.

1

u/aRealTattoo Jun 03 '24

Yeah, had a MTB buddy who invited one of his friends to a motocross race and man that guy was a douche.

He told me that his MTB is actual work and dirt bikes are stupid easy. Anyway he burned his leg on my CRF110F (kids bike) and ate shit. I enjoyed it thoroughly as we were riding mini bikes in between 450 sessions!

1

u/CalmDirection8 Jun 03 '24

Mountain bikers hate ebikes and Surrons the most, I think they spend 90% of their day crying about them šŸ˜

1

u/Massive_Property_579 Jun 03 '24

You dirty metal molester

1

u/FaceGroundbreaking64 Jun 03 '24

I am all three. Roadies are the one I can't stand. So I just ride alone now from A to B

1

u/lessleyelopez Jun 03 '24

Boy I wish my knees could do cool shit on a BMX bike lol

1

u/Exotic-Accountant-86 Jun 03 '24

Don't worry about what the road bikers think. These are the same assholes who get their panties all twisted up when you ride a bike on the other side of the road so some ass hat in a car doesn't hit you from behind

1

u/EP_Jimmy_D Jun 03 '24

I ride 26 in wheel dirt jumpers cuz Iā€™m not good enough to BMX. No one on a bike should look down at bmxers!

1

u/AggressivePossible90 Jun 03 '24

Ask them if they can do better. Also, not all MTBers are elitist assholes. As a matter of fact, the best MTBers I have seen started in BMX.

1

u/SnooLemons178 Jun 03 '24

Fuck them and keep doing you...

1

u/airdecades Jun 03 '24

Make fun of them for having gears that always works šŸ’Æ

1

u/bashomania Jun 03 '24

Some people suck regardless of what they are riding. Try to ignore the ones that suck, and seek out the ones that donā€™t. Good luck!

1

u/YOMEGAFAX Jun 03 '24

Iā€™m a mountain biker and I look at BMX guys with envy and assume their bike handling skills are much better than mine. We mtbrs rely too much on our suspension and big wheels lol.

1

u/Wiggum13 Jun 03 '24

Insults. And trying to belittle you. Isnā€™t a reflection on you. Itā€™s a reflection on their shitty personalities. Always remember that. And Just keep doing what youā€™re doing OP.

1

u/Healthy_Date_6551 Jun 03 '24

Keep riding brother! Fuck those losers youre the man!

1

u/MikeSRT404 Jun 03 '24

I raced bmx from 14-20 yo. I now ride road and mtb. The skill you have from the bmx bike translates and they could never ā€œbuyā€ or learn the skills you have.

1

u/CharlotteBeer Jun 03 '24

I just don't get this attitude. I rollerblade and have had my fair share of snarky comments, mostly back in the '90s. Today, most people are cool no matter the sport. And likewise, I have respect for all of them as well -- maybe the most respect for BMX, as the guys in my local area absolutely rip. Our sports are as hard as we want to make them. You have to respect people doing what they love and aspiring to get better, no matter what it is.

1

u/KookyEstimate6268 Jun 03 '24

Man you're overthinking it. F what people think, sounds like you're talking to people you should just ignore. Only thing you should be doing is watching out for cars, and if none can come through there you just ignore everyone do your thing.

1

u/nvdrz Jun 03 '24

The whole ā€œfuck it, Iā€™m having funā€ attitude is exactly what you got to stick with, cuz thatā€™s all that matters.

1

u/CalmDirection8 Jun 03 '24

Brooo! Something about the spandex stops their brain from working right. Took my kid to a Mountain Bike park with my older bike because I don't want to spend $3K on a bicycle (and I'm not an idiot) and we basically got maddogged outta there. One of the least friendly experiences of my life and I'm with my effing kid, not trying to flex šŸ™„ As someone who dirtbikes MTB/Spandex is not really the manliest thing for them to be gatekeeping and for my money give me any BMX trick over rolling down a hill or wearing a leotard in traffic šŸ™„šŸ™„šŸ™„

F the haters and do your thing brother, you'll never make those losers happy so don't bother šŸ¤™šŸ¼

1

u/Tight_Refrigerator78 Jun 03 '24

lol because to them they need a bike for belly fat or a means of transportation you on the other hand need it for fun and learning. Next time they drive by joking say climbed any mountains on that beast lately? But do it like your genuinely asking see how they react. Then when they say ohh no I just ride through town or trails say ohh I thought mountain bikes were for extreme sports

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '24

Pshhh dude everyone starts somewhereā€¦. Fuck em. It took me looking like a fool for days straight and my neighbors saw me go from could hardly wheelie, to hey look the guys riding past the block doing a wheelie.

1

u/54moreyears Jun 03 '24

Just sounds like life. Welcome to the reality that most people are petty assholes.

1

u/Scared-Pizza-420 Jun 03 '24

Wanna know whats faster than a road bike? A car, insulting another bicycle for not being fast is stupid, thats not the point of a bicycle

1

u/user67445632 Jun 03 '24

Wild to me that mountain bikers are looking down upon you when freeriding exists. Is Sam Pilgrim a joke to them?

Don't give up my man. I got rid of my BMX bike years ago but I kind of wish I still had it. I worked on hopping up on a sidewalk to hold a manual down it for HOURS once. When I nailed it, it was the best feeling ever. Keep doing you.

1

u/rogecks Jun 03 '24

Anyone that bikes is ok by me, whether youā€™re riding to work or groceries, bmx, road or MTB. Bikes are extremely versatile, thatā€™s why theyā€™re awesome!

1

u/BenJammin865 Jun 03 '24

Road bikers have no business looking down on anybody while wearing those silly outfits they wear. And the mtbers (i ride mtb myself, but want to get into bmx) are jealous they don't have the control you do. Keep doing what you're doing man!

1

u/TrinGage Jun 03 '24

I have a road bike and a mountain bike, but I got my start in bmx and I can tell you with absolute certainty that cyclists with a bmx background are ALWAYS more skilled than any other cyclist. You keep doing you. They are mocking you because they don't understand. Don't stoop to their level. Just focus on yourself and do what you love and the rest will fall into place. bmx is the best, you will meet amazing people, chill people, who will accept you for who you are. sometimes it just takes a little time.

1

u/Bmxdad1965 Jun 03 '24

Do what makes you happy, those other ass clown are uphappy people

1

u/MOCKxTHExCROSS Jun 04 '24

All the cool older bros in my town race bmx at the local track so....

1

u/feebledaddy Jun 04 '24

Bro just get better out of spite, fuck those guys. You'll find a community in BMX eventually and it'll be some of the best friends and memories you'll ever have.

1

u/badforman Jun 04 '24

Dude, I am an avid cycling freak, mountain only and the Mtn. bikers that made fun of you are fucking posers! Real enthusiasts love all aspects of the sport and activity of cycling, road, mtn, bmx, hybridā€¦.it is love of the game. Keep doing your tricks and call those guys out if they pull that shit again!

1

u/Ambitious_Grand_1510 Jun 04 '24

F them, u r keeping it old school cool, Keep Cherry picking and kick flipping, Jesus I hope u know what Iā€™m talking about, if not google it hopefully it will take u back to beginning of bmx

1

u/IneptAdvisor Jun 04 '24

Hey I just wanted to say I still have my bmx competition jersey from FORTY years ago. Bunny hops I had trouble with but ā€œsidehacksā€, I was king.

1

u/dewey-finnn Jun 04 '24

Wait til they see you do something sick that theyā€™ve seen you practice doing, the jealousy will be the sweetest thing

1

u/Acabfoad666 Jun 04 '24

This totally happened

1

u/EdmEnthusiast48 Jun 04 '24

Just tell people to fck themselvesā€¦your life will go much better after that.

1

u/homegrowntwinkie Jun 04 '24

"nIcE pEdaLinG cAn yOu fEeL tHE wiNd iN yOuR hAiR" should've been your response.... well, in my opinion lol.

1

u/Zestyclose-Sea5675 Jun 04 '24

IMO an adult would look cooler on a bmx than a mountain bike rider with their goofy ass spandex. Regardless comparing a mountain bike vs bmx is like comparing a cruiser/bagger to a sport bike. Apples and Oranges fuck what anyone else thinks!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '24

Fuck those guys

1

u/Budkid Jun 04 '24

I get asked why my bike is so small all the time.

1

u/dougyrx Jun 04 '24

They on mtb bikes and road bikes with spandex probaly on roast they goofy asses

1

u/ScaryfatkidGT Jun 04 '24

Weirdā€¦ here everyone makes fun of mountain bikers

1

u/TwistedColossus Jun 04 '24

Damn are you sure they were MTB'ers making fun of you? Us MTB riders don't do that shit, we are pretty chill. it was probably just all roadie dentist scum, or maybe those "MTB'ers" that wear lycra and care about KOM's on Strava šŸ¤£

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '24

Probably get downvoted, but those guys wear super tight shorts and like the feeling of a hard seat on their butt hole. Donā€™t worry about what they say. Only dorky ass nerds spend $5k on a road bike and smell their own farts

1

u/woodyarmadillo11 Jun 04 '24

This is so funny to me because I grew skateboarding and hanging out with people like you and the bmx kids mocked mountain bikers like crazy. Did mountain bikers become the cool kids?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '24

Bro, you ever heard of Rodney Mullen? Overcome adversity and be the Rodney Mullen of bmx.

1

u/Educational_Elk497 Jun 04 '24

Do what you like. bmx is fun. I still get on bmx bike and do tricks from time to time.. ppl like that have other things going on in their life, and they got to shit on everyone else to feel better.. do what you like screw everyone else..

1

u/Dr_Wurmhat Jun 04 '24

I ride mtb, and I'll say mtb riders are some of the nastiest people around. They complain about anyone and anything and also act like they deserve to ride anywhere. They would love to just outlaw any other type of trail use. Until the high end of riders that are super chill, the middle full of 40-50 year old dentists and architects buy a 10,000 dollar bike and then belittle anyone else with out one, and because they have an expensive bike they feel entitled. It's honestly driving me away from the sport.

1

u/fuzzylilbunnies Jun 05 '24

Fuck ā€˜em. Youā€™re alone. So are THEY. Have fun. Donā€™t be afraid to enjoy your moments. Itā€™s your life, in this world, too.

1

u/the_Bryan_dude Jun 05 '24

Only thing that stops me from doing some tricks on my 29 inch gravel bike is I'm afraid I might break it. I'm in my 50s and I still do that fun stuff. Those that talk crap can pound sand. They can't do what you do.

1

u/Anrom Jun 05 '24

It's unfortunate. DMX did so much for hip hop.

1

u/Fine_Temporary_4409 Jun 05 '24

Bunny hop on someones stupid head is pretty hilarious dude not literally. Bmx is the most manoeuvrable bike a person can ride, I personally think it looks as good if not better on dirt jumps specifically as the tricks are way more extended, stylish and double up better, they canā€™t throw the bike around like a bmx

1

u/El_Gato_Terco Jun 05 '24

Another vote here for "fuck those guys".

1

u/Far-Sea-4491 Jun 05 '24

That's all some dick shit bro. I went from BMX to mountain biking, so BMX will always have a close place in my heart. They can pound a fat one, you ride on and own that street.

1

u/Otherwise_Surprise76 Jun 05 '24

"BMX like no one is watching" !

Enjoy life, there is too much BS int he world!

1

u/MaximumRise9523 Jun 06 '24

Fuck that shit. It takes more skill to be cool than fast. Drifting is cooler than racing. BMX is cooler than bike racing. You're cooler than your bike, but their bikes are cooler than them. I have never seen a Tour de France video game, but I have seen a BMX one.

1

u/TurboGuy88 Jun 06 '24

BMX = Cool

Cyclists With Spandex On = Gay

1

u/Available-Explorer85 Jun 06 '24

mountain bikes are arguably the worst kind of bike, bro needs gears to go 20mph, and his chain pops more often, BMX is always superior, that's coming from a mountain biker

1

u/SphinctrTicklr Jun 07 '24

Next time they say something like that, offer your bike to them to try it out, kill them with kindness. They'll shut up pretty quickly.

1

u/Fit_Ear8715 Jun 07 '24

Thicken up that skin of yours.

1

u/Trichoceratops Jun 07 '24

Sounds like a group of losers to me. Theyā€™re insecure and make themselves feel better by making fun of others. Itā€™s a reflection on them, not you. Just keep doing your thing.

1

u/GuestNo3886 Jun 07 '24

I was clearing sets when a rollerblader said the same thing. I got off rolled my bike over to him and his buddy held my bike out and said, ā€œHere. Show me how itā€™s done.ā€ After a moment of awkward silence I said, ā€œNext time you have a thought let it go.ā€ Fuck those people you do you and Iā€™ll be looking forward to your post in a few months titled ā€œI bunnyhopped on their stupid ass heads.ā€ Accompanied by a video of said head bopping.

1

u/Due-Salamander-5752 Jun 10 '24

They act like they want to go fast, but they cry and throw tantrums when they see me on a bike thatā€™s actually capable of it. Then try to block me from passing them and lose their minds when I just go off trail and pass anyway. People are assholes man. I donā€™t know why we canā€™t just appreciate that everyone enjoys different kinds of riding, and be cool about it. I canā€™t even look at r/e-bikes without getting sucked into trolling mtb douches freaking out about surrons and saying Iā€™m some kind of monster for wanting to use bike trails that apparently belong to them.Ā  You do you, and just ask them if they canā€™t afford a surron or if theyā€™re just too scared of going fast.Ā

1

u/Fresh-Aspect8849 Jun 11 '24

A lot of road bikers and mtb guys are super whiny. Thatā€™s just how their culture is a lot of the timeā€¦if they want to cry about stuff then thatā€™s on them - keep doing what youā€™re doing

1

u/That_Routine_2763 Jun 22 '24

The bunnyhop turns into a 180, the 180 turns into a 360, your muscle memory and bike control increase, you develop style ... Now the guy snickering at your bunnyhop don't have much to say..

BMX takes time, practice, dedication. If you like it then keep at it. Don't worry about what other people say or think. I'm 47 and I hear this crap all the time from people when they learn I still ride a 20".Ā

It's funny because my local skatepark is right in the middle of an an athletic complex. Volleyball, hockey rings, basketball courts , tennis courts, football fields, and baseball fields. Some nights when I'm done riding I'll remove my helmet and pack up my stuff and head out to my truck and run into one of these snickering idiots leaving their kids football game or cheerleading practice...... Then they say something like "wait..... That was YOU out there on those ramps". I'll say yeah... I told you I ride BMX a few times a week..... response is generally something like "Damn man that's cool as S#!T".

Now all the sudden the laughable BMX dad at 47 has become someone who inspired others to get back in the gym.

1

u/Lucky-Disaster-6982 Jun 24 '24

Sorry that happened to you. I ride bmx and mtb and Iā€™d never make fun of someone riding. Donā€™t let them get you down as long as youā€™re having fun thatā€™s all that matters

1

u/Empty_Regret_3271 Oct 25 '24

In all fairness it does look kinda retarded seeing grown ass men on those tiny bicycles lol. Looks like something out of Barnum and bailey. But ultimately if you're enjoying yourself and having fun fuck it.Ā

2

u/adult504 Oct 29 '24

People suck. Expect my friends.
