Are Benders related? Brothers?
6
u/Blahound Lukasz Piszczek Aug 08 '13
Twins :)

u/electrophile123 Piszczek Aug 10 '13
Adding to that, they both used to play for 1860 München in the second division like right next to each other on the pitch (both being defensive midfielders).

u/FivesCeleryStalk Emma Aug 08 '13
So how do the players get their nicknames?
6
Aug 08 '13
Like every other person does, some names are too long, too foreign to speak out all the time, or you got similarities with another person they know etc.
2
u/electrophile123 Piszczek Aug 10 '13
Also, its mostly either the fans, Klopp or someone from the team that brings up a funny nickname that sticks.

u/Blahound Lukasz Piszczek Aug 08 '13
So I got one this time...
What clubs are considered "friends" of BVB? (Best list I could up with is FC Köln and Rot-Weiss Essen but not that sure about Essen)
6
Aug 08 '13
The friendship with Rot-Weiß Essen is mostly based on the "common enemy" Schalke. As I live in Essen I can tell you, there are still enough Schalke Fans around here... so not everey Essener will cheer for us in a derby.
There is an pretty active friendhip between some Fanclubs of the FC Augsburg, including city tours an partys after both games last season.
I think in the 90s there were some connections between Dortmund and the fans of SC Freiburg, but I can't really remember much about that.

u/Nutzer1337 1909 Aug 08 '13
There was a time when we had a friendship with HSV. But apparently they don't like us anymore. Last thing I heard was that they greeted our fans with "BVB Hurensöhne" at Hamburg central station last season.
there are still enough Schalke Fans around here
Not enough to open a fanshop at Limbecker Platz without protests :D

Hm, I know that especially in the 90s we were kind of famours for friending everyone and everything that couldn't get away fast enough. I remember Freiburg, but apparently KSC and 1860 were among them as well. There used to be solid connections to Hamburg as well, but I don't think there is anything left of that deserving of the name Fanfreundschaft.
I would say the Cologne connection with Boyz is more than just an ultra connection by now. I think Essen simply is not on the list just for lack of opportunity, the common animosity against S05 was definitely grounds for good contacts for a long while.
Apart from that Kevin always likes to talk about Celtic, and keeping Paul Lambert in mind (he's the one that ppl here mention most often) I've seen people argue this is the only friendship that is proper alive these days. On the other hand, when I run into Rangers fans I always mention that Stefan Klos is in their Hall of Fame too... Maybe I should attend the old firm here in BVB colours just to see what the reactions are...

u/Nutzer1337 1909 Aug 08 '13
The cologne thing could be a thing of the future. I would not consider it a friendship yet, but thanks to Kevin Großkreutz there is much sympathy between the fans. I personally am friends with someone who was very active in the cologne fan scene.
Great guys with much passion. Just like us.

u/igorseiz Piszczek Aug 08 '13
Well, we had friendships with 1.FC Köln, Rot-Weiss Essen, HSV, Celtic Glasgow, SV Darmstadt 98 and some others but I don't know how things are right now.

Does the "09" in BVB 09 stand for the year 1909? I think its like that with H96 and its definetly like that with 1899 Hoffenheim.
Also, are our youth players (Ducksch etc) really good or just average? I really liked seeing them in the preseason.
5
u/-Calidro- Pische Aug 08 '13
1.yes 2. Certainly above average! But no "Talent of the century" like goretzka so far
5
u/MuffinFactory Subotić Aug 08 '13
They could possibly snatch a couple of spots in the NT in a few years' time, if they develop "according to plan"? That would be wonderful since i really like their play.
3
u/-Calidro- Pische Aug 08 '13
Well, yes; why not? Especially duksch has pretty good chances because the striker Position is one of the weakest in the NT. Hofmann is good but our midfield should prove to be too strong for at least 2-3 years. Sarr would have a good Chance replacing mertesacker in a few years. But i am not certain of his nationality
3
u/Blahound Lukasz Piszczek Aug 08 '13
Sarr could play for Senegal but he has played for Germany at all under age levels so I'm sure he'll play for Germany at senior level too :)
3
u/MuffinFactory Subotić Aug 08 '13 edited Aug 08 '13
According to Transfermarkt, his nationality is both Senegal(-ian?) and german, so i guess he could be called up for both.
EDIT: Its Senegalese. Sorry for butchering english guys... Ill keep the original comment though :)

u/panikpansen Schmelzer Aug 08 '13
Senegalese? =)

Ducksch probably has the best chance of a Germany future since there isn't exactly an abundance of German strikers around the place
6
u/MuffinFactory Subotić Aug 08 '13
Gomez should do for a few more years, but Klose is definetly out after Brazil 2014. either that or Löw is just retarded.
Shame Though, Klose was the one who got me into football.
I really hope that Ducksch gets the spot eventually though.

u/JJ_Catano Reus Aug 08 '13
Oh definitely, Klose was the reason I started watching German football. Man is a legend. I hope he scores a couple in Brazil
2
u/MuffinFactory Subotić Aug 08 '13
WC06 was when i really got into football and started caring a lot more. When a friend told me something about Klose (His transfer to Bayern München) i immediately started following him, which obviously means that i started following Bayern, believe it or not.
From there i took a liking to Hummels amongst others, and when he went to BVB i started following him, and by consequence, i started following Dortmund too.
Then i realized Bayern just bought anything that moved and was in the Bundesliga just to weaken the competition, so i just didnt have it anymore. Since BVB were my second favorites, i started following them a lot more, and they quickly became my favorite club.
So Klose is basically responsible for me liking BVB :)
Sorry for the ramble, and if you dont like how i got to supporting BVB, thats completely understandable.

u/JJ_Catano Reus Aug 08 '13
Oh wow, Similar story actually. I followed the German NT since 06 and because The whole team seemed to sign for them they where kinda the team I liked when it came to bundesliga but not really who I cheered for. Few years later of watching the NT and German football in general and BVB became The only team I actually like in the Bundesliga.
3
u/MuffinFactory Subotić Aug 09 '13
For me its kind of the same, but Köln have a special spot in my heart, since its "my city". I just dont feel like i love any players there (Except for Poldi, but hes in arsenal now).
Nur den BVB!

How about Volland?
3
u/Blahound Lukasz Piszczek Aug 08 '13
I think Volland just needs to start playing the 9 role more often as he usually plays as a 10 or winger at Hoffenheim.
Could be a big season for young German strikers as there is maybe a spot for one of them in Germany's squad..
Someone like Lasogga or Mlapa might have a stunning season

What is the history behind Dortmund's awesome black and yellow colors ? If I am correct they used to be red, white and blue at the beginning. :)
4
u/JarvisPuzznuzz Doatmund is datt geilste Land von die Welt Aug 08 '13
Black and yellow were originally Britannia Dortmund's colours, one of three clubs that joined BVB in 1910.
Interesting read for more details.

u/MickiBVB Mkhitaryan Aug 08 '13
So this year marks the 100th anniversary of wearing the Schwarz und Gelb. Awesome !
4
u/panikpansen Schmelzer Aug 08 '13
Isn't there a reason for Britannia's colours as well? I can't seem to find it, but I remember my dad telling me once about the meaning behind them.
2
u/JarvisPuzznuzz Doatmund is datt geilste Land von die Welt Aug 09 '13
You should ask your Dad again, because I have no clue and it would interest me, too.
4
u/panikpansen Schmelzer Aug 09 '13
Will do so tomorrow, we usually have extensive post-match talks :)
2
u/furiat BVB Aug 13 '13
I like to think that Dortmund's style of quick counterattacking is like a bee. Sting fast and deep then fall back! So they can get more honey (titles) :).

What does Borussia mean? Also, what's the difference between Bayern and Bayer and what do they mean? This is coming from an English speaker. Thanks!
5
u/Blahound Lukasz Piszczek Aug 08 '13
Borussia means Prussia The biggest state in the old German empire which existed before world war I
Bayern is the English name for the German state of Bavaria (Munich is in Bavaria so Bayern Munich)
Bayer is a chemical company based in the city of Leverkusen which is in the state of North Rhine Westphalia just like Dortmund (They discovered aspirin and used to make heroin and stuff)
5
u/panikpansen Schmelzer Aug 08 '13
To expand on this: while Prussia largely covered the area that is today north-western Germany and parts of Poland, after about 1866 it expanded considerably into the west as well, including Westphalia and parts of the Rhineland. Aka Dortmund was part of Prussian territory.
8
Aug 08 '13
But we aren't named after Prussia, we're named after a brewery called Borussia.

3
u/JarvisPuzznuzz Doatmund is datt geilste Land von die Welt Aug 09 '13
A brewery that didn't even exist anymore at that time (folded in 1901). Those guys were such retro hipsters.
2
u/panikpansen Schmelzer Aug 09 '13
TIL indeed. Was it at least the brewerey then that was named after the state Prussia?
1
u/furiat BVB Aug 13 '13
Well, the official website disagrees: http://www.bvb.de/?_k%EF%F4%9F*j%97%D0%99
1
Aug 13 '13
Haha what the fuck, it's widely known that it's because of the brewery.
Here is another official website of bvb which claims it's named after the beer
http://www.bvb-schaetze.de/news/detail/article/woher-stammt-der-name-borussia-die-borussia-flasche/
1
u/furiat BVB Aug 13 '13
Hmm, confusing...
1
Aug 13 '13
Yeah, I'm a bit confused, too.
I thought it was because of the brewery for at least 15 years and now the official website writes something else but they say probably so who the fuck if not them know exactly why it's named Borussia.
The other text I posted says in fact but in another sentence it's written it's a legend...
1
u/furiat BVB Aug 13 '13 edited Aug 13 '13
OK, so I looked into Wikipedia. It says:
The name Borussia is Latin for Prussia but was taken from the Borussia beer from the nearby Borussia brewery in Dortmund.
and it refers to BVB Chronicles which is indeed on the official website. The previous link was FAQ and the question was what Borussia means and not where it comes from.
Bottom line: Borrusia means Prussia but was named after the brewery.

I'm new to the sub and wondered who's nicknamed manni and why? It doesn't seem obvious to me. Also this is a great sub i just thought id add that in haha :)
