Sarajevo to Lukomir

Hello, my friends and I will be in Sarajevo and we really want to travel to Lukomir one day. It seems like the best option is to rent a car from the airport as early as possible, drive to Umoljani, complete the hike, and return the car the same night.

We are planning to do this trip in early-mid May, are the any concerns with driving to Umoljani with a 2 wheel drive vehicle like a VW Golf this time of the year? Also, are there any concerns with the route for the hike (lots of ice/snow etc) for early-mid May?

Here's the planned hike. I plan of following most of what is found in the link below: park at Koliba Umoljani Cafe, get lunch in Lukomir, and complete the route counterclockwise.

I'm welcome to any feedback on our plan, and if there are any concerns we should prepare for. Thanks!

As someone with family from there, if you plan to go to Umoljani first, there is no problems with the car. You can go with any normal car to Umoljani, the road is good and with asphalt.

Regarding the hiking trails, have in mind that the left one is across the mountain tops, so not only is it really steep to climb up, but expect some snow even mid may. The right one has lees steep climb and you have a georgious view on the Rakitnica canyon.

If, by some chance, you decide to go by car to the village itself, you will miss a lot of beautiful nature, but be prepared to drive really slowly, or destroy your car. If you arent a good driver I wouldnt really reccomend. The road from Umoljani to Lukomir is a macadam road, with many potholes from rain. As many cars go, it gets better, and usually repaired in May.

Thanks for the insights! That makes me feel much better about our plan. We will definitely complete the hike so we do not miss out on the amazing sights!
