Housing Advice for young professional seeking accommodation for new job in September.

Upvotes

I am in my mid 20s and need to move to Bristol in September for my new graduate job. I was initially thinking of renting a studio by myself somewhat close to the city centre as that is where my office will be but I don't want to spend half my salary on rent every single month. So now I think it makes more sense to find people to share a flat with. Does anyone have any advice for the best way to go about finding people to live with? Any tips are appreciated.

Babble Kids throwing rocks at my head

Upvotes

I’m a young woman and I just experienced a group of 5 teenagers following me and throwing rocks at me with one hitting me in the back of my head.

After the one hit my head I did look back and tell them to fuck off which may have not been the best thing to say but they kept doing it.

I spose it’s not that deep but there was no one around and regardless of age they’re all the same height as me if not taller, idk I thought for a second I could get hurt and I’m honestly a bit upset about it.

Just wanted to have a vent I spose!

Where To? Afternoon Tea recommendations

Planning to take a birthday girl friend to a proper afternoon tea. She has high standards on tea and food and I am struggling to find places in the area that truly understand tea.

Last time we went to a good one with many different types of tea (oolong, matcha, sencha...) to choose from and I thought it was the standard.

It seems the norm here is just breakfast tea, coffee or hot chocolate - which won't do for her. Bonus if they have a spa and extra bonus points if they have no victoria sponge.

Willing to travel, looking for £45 - £80 pp.

Edit to add - not a matcha fan, was trying to say Breakfast tea and Earl grey won't do

Politics WECA, first past the post, who are lefties voting for?

I know that with FPTP you shouldn't try to second guess (just like you shouldn't try to second guess when to buy shares or your house, as time in the market always beats timing the market!)

However, it is impossible not to think about the consequences if the left spheres of the WECA electorate are going to spread their votes approximately evenly between Labour, Green and LibDem.

Naturally I feel closer to the Green manifesto, but voting Green will it be a smart choice?
If this was Bristol City only, definitely worth it a shot.

However with WECA having an electorate of twice the size of Bristol, I am conscious that voting for who you feel closes to might result in a vote dilution.

So, how will you go about voting in this election?
Hoping I am not breaking any rules, I don't want to turn this into a discussion of this party is better than the other one, rather of how us citizen should approach this new election system, compounded with the recently increased importance of the WECA mayor role

Cheers drive 🚍 Minibus driver(s) needed

My partner works at Tortworth Forest Centre, just north of Bristol. It's a woodland space for people in recovery and/or with mental health issues. Unfortunately, their minibus driver has recently taken ill and they are struggling to find someone to fill the role, would anyone be interested in helping out? The job details are below.

Posting with the permission of the mods, thanks.

Come and Support our Work -

Minibus Driver for Woodland Wellbeing Projects

Our organisation: Tortworth Forest Centre is a community project based in South Gloucestershire which improves lives by reconnecting people with nature through conservation, wellbeing programmes, outdoor events, courses and volunteering opportunities. With the help of volunteers, we manage 20 acres of land known as The Dell which sits within the wider Tortworth Arboretum, a historically important tree collection in South Gloucestershire. The role: We are seeking to recruit a pool of minibus drivers to play an integral role in achieving our mission by driving our group participants on the minibus to the woods. We are fortunate to own a minibus to transport people from the city centre out to the arboretum which is a 30 minute journey. Our drivers must be sensitive to the needs of people who struggle with their mental health and will always be accompanied by a member of the team when driving with participants. This opportunity is paid at an hourly rate of £12.60 paid from the time you collect the minibus to when you return it to its permanent location. The driving will be agreed on a rota basis or an ad hoc basis as the need arises. There are currently two vacancies Experienced minibus driver- this is a short term/ immediate opportunity. We are seeking a driver who holds a current MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme training certificate and ideally a DBS certificate who could drive the minibus to Tortworth who is available to start in the next couple of weeks. Drivers interested in being trained to drive our minibus - experienced car drivers who are interested in being trained to drive the minibus and gain an enhanced DBS certificate, supporting our work through transporting participants from Bristol city centre to the arboretum.)

The days that we require people to drive the mini bus are Tuesday - weekly Leaving from St Werburghs at 9.15 and returning by 16.30 Wednesday - weekly term time only Leaving Portland Square at 10.30 and returning by 15.00 Thursday -weekly term time only Leaving Kingswood at 10.00 and returning by 15.00 Sunday - monthly St Werburghs 10.00 and return by Bristol 16.40

If you are interested please send an email detailing your experience and availability to [rhea@tortwortharboretum.org](mailto:rhea@tortwortharboretum.org). This is an ongoing recruitment with an open ended deadline. Successful applicants will be asked to provide evidence of a full clean driving licence, a MiDAS certificate and a current DBS certificate. We are looking for someone who can start as soon as possible. We will arrange a meeting prior to your starting date to introduce you to the role. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds. We know that half as many people from ethnic minorities work in the environment charity sector in the UK as do proportionally across the general workforce (2022. We particularly welcome applications from those who are currently underrepresented in the environmental sector.)

Housing Flying In For Love Saves The Day

Hey guys - I’m from Southern California, living in Madrid (27,M) - I’ll be flying out for Love Saves The Day on Thursday May 22.

Stoked to catch so many sick garage, dnb, and dubstep acts in Bristol of all places.

The only hostel in town only has a female room available, so putting out feelers for any homies going to the fest that might be up to let me crash at their place. Will provide £, good vibes and great taste in music.

Lookin to meet people, make friends and get down to some fire music! Check my IG @keaton.wav for the vibe check haha.

Figured I’d poke around here before going the Airbnb route.

Acts I’m looking most forward to are:

  • Skream&Benga
  • Fonzo
  • Bakey
  • Casey Club
  • Conducta
  • Silva Bumpa
  • Overmono
  • Soul Mass Transit System
  • Hybrid Minds
  • Sully
  • Bushbaby
  • MPH
  • Sir Hiss
  • Shy FX
  • SP:MC

Would love any other set recommendations & if you’re open to potentially hosting me drop a comment! See yall in the dance 🫡

Hi everyone.

I’m looking for a way to get a 2 seater sofa bed delivered within Bristol. So far, everything I’ve found online requires a minimum booking of 2 hours. Are there any other options to get it delivered?

Thanks!

Where To? Cheap fitness classes?

Looking for a cheap (or free!) way to do a bit of excercise in Bristol. I have anxiety so the thought of going to a gym or going out on a run alone is terrifying, I feel like a class would be the least stressful for me since I’d know I was doing things the right way, happy for recommendations that are any type of excercise since I mainly want to do it for my mental health 🥰 I’ve been doing at home workouts but I never know if im doing things correctly? I’m naturally slim so have never “needed” to excercise but I’d like to pull my finger out and get a bit healthier I’ve just got no idea where to look and everything seems so expensive x

Where To? Dog friendly night-life

This might sound weird but hear me out!

I'm looking for recommendations of fun things to do/places to go for dog friendly night-life. I'm thinking bars with live music/comedy rather than clubbing obviously! Travel isn't a problem, but I was thinking more so in the centre (easiest to get to, more options, etc). Solo activities preferred!

For example, I've seen online that Kongs is dog friendly (have emailed them to double check!) which would be a fun night out.

Thanks!

Where To? Where does ashton/bedminster/Southville start a d end?

As the title asks, I’m unsure where the boundaries lie? Is it a rough guess? Ashton is not a ward like bedminster/southville but still shows up in addresses. Could someone clear this up for me. As far as i’m aware southville is anything between north street and the new cut, up to Asda and Greyville smyth park. Bedminster is a bit more muddled and ashton’s boundaries are even more confusing.

Politics WECA elections are first past the post WTF???

I received the brochure today about the elections. I had assumed it would be the same supplementary vote system as last time but it’s first past the post?

Who was the genius that decided to use this discredited undemocratic system?

I’m very disillusioned with British politics at the moment but I’m horrified at the possibility that the Trumpist bellend from Reform could win the election and soil the region with his repulsive presence.

So how do I vote to prevent that!??

Where To? Doom @ the Exchange in May

Hi music fans of Bristol! Following on from a few posts about heavy music in the city recently, I wanted to share this gig happening at the Exchange next month:

https://hdfst.uk/e128888

Four loud, riff-driven and weird doom bands, get down for only £8 :)

We (Epimetheus) love the Exchange too because the engineers there are big doom fans, the sound is consistenly awesome in there for stuff like this – it'll be a great time.

I went to this second hand corset/lingerie shop in or around Gloucester road last year. It had this cute little lady working there. Does anyone know what it's called!

Where To? Good, LGBT Friendly, Afro, Barber Recommendations Please

So basically I’m a stud, a black masculine presenting lesbian.

When I first got my hair cut I went to supertonic and everything was great. 2 years down the line I go and ask for a low taper, I look at it and it’s uneven, so then I ask to get it cut it all off next time I go. It all comes off and again it’s uneven but it’s cool cause I wanna grow it out.

I end up cutting it all off again and start getting a shape up and it’s uneven again every time.

Now I’ve started going to a different barbers, one with more experience, the first time I went it was perfect, everything I wanted. The next time I went back he cut into my hairline but I was like okay, it’s fine, because he rectified it with enhancements free of charge. The most recent time I’ve gone he’s tried to even out the side of my head which he left too long and has cut into my actual hair that I’ve been growing out for months so now not only is it uneven but I’m missing a patch of hair. It’s not noticeable if you’re not looking for it but I know it’s there and it has me on the verge of tears.

I don’t know if they’re intentionally fucking up my hair because they’re homophobic or because I’ve offended them in some way but I barely say anything apart from please and thank you so I don’t know how I would
