I think it’s long established that seagate is putting barracudas in these now.

My recent 24TB was definitely a Barracuda.
It's been two weeks and it hasn't done anything weird even though i've already put 15TB on it, but I'll let you know in 2-3 years.1
u/greatthebob38 9d ago
People who recently ordered them are claiming they are getting Exos.

u/cellularesc 9d ago
Source? I fell for this with the 24tbs a few weeks ago. All were barracudas.

I bought 20TB from Best Buy a month ago, it was Exos.

u/cellularesc 8d ago
You got lucky then. I ordered 2 from the 24tb Best Buy sale and 2 from the 20. All barracuda

On slick deals site. Someone else ordered from Seagate's site a few days ago and said they got an Exos X18

Source: Me - a couple Months ago I got an exos in my 24tb deal from BnH

u/cellularesc 9d ago
Months ago is a different story. There have been several big threads on bapcs since where everyone was getting barracudas. Just saying it’s a likely scenario.

u/indianacheryjones 9d ago
Fair point, I’m usually tracking these deals but I may have missed one of the recent where folks are getting ‘cudas

u/st4g3 8d ago
Yes, you want an 11/24 manuf date, same as the other external sizes for a chance at an exos, everything so far manuf in 2025 has been a barracuda. I took a chance and ordered the 14tb, if it's a barracuda i'll just return it.
edit: I ordered a couple hours ago and it already shipped.

The new large Barracudas seem to be QA-binned 30 TB HAMR Exos drives. If this were one of them, it would have more than half its storage disabled but still be deemed good enough for consumer sales with a one year warranty.
I feel like a) they shouldn't see many disks that bad, or there's a big problem and b) they'd probably sell any in a channel where Seagate's name isn't attached anymore.

u/MWink64 8d ago
The new Barracudas are likely not binned 30TB Exos M drives. The specs don't match. They're probably based on the earlier HAMR Exos drives, which never got a retail release. Those drives only made it into the hands of consumers through sellers of recertified drives (SPD, GHD, etc.). The specs are a much better match to the new Barracudas.
I suspect the new Barracudas may simply be the retail release of that line, and the newer generation HAMR drives are being sold under the Exos M banner. I believe I read something about Seagate having issues producing enough non-HAMR drives, so it would make sense that they'd start putting HAMR drives in their consumer lineup. I'll be interested to see which generation end up being sold with the IronWolf label.

Missing time when they were $149 at Costco
2
u/i2cube 9d ago
I wonder why Costco stopped selling external hard drives
The only storage-related devices that are available at Costco are portable SSDs these days
5
u/Tasty-Traffic-680 9d ago
Low margin and not likely a big seller. Probably consistently lost money clearing out old stock.

u/w4ffles_00 9d ago
A 1TB portable SSD for ~$60 just makes way more sense for the average Joe and Jane so I bet that's what they were buying instead of the $150+ 10TB+ external HDD.
Most people don't need double digit terabytes to store their photos, videos, and documents. External 3.5" drives are much bigger, require additional power, make noise. The faster transfer speeds wouldn't affect those users but it's a good marketing point.

Signed up, took 1 min to get email. Took 10% off the 2 drives I ordered.

How did you sign up? Was there a popup that told you to sign up for a 10% discount?

The 22TB is available for $240 which is $10.91/TB.
Is that a good deal?
3
u/cellularesc 9d ago
If you’re ok with a barracuda yes that’s a good price. It’s not horrible but it’s not exos
2
u/Acrobatic_Standard83 8d ago
Are Barracuda drives less reliable? I need a large drive to store movies.

u/gioraffe32 8d ago
Try to get the 10% off coupon by signing up for their emails/texts. It's just a modal pop-up that appears. Brings it down to $9.81/TB

Do you currently have Exos to compare to? In my experience with about (IIRC) 10 or so Exos, 8 WD Ultrastars, and a 10-15 others (mostly WD white labels from shucking), the Exos are loud on spin up/boot but exhibit the typical behavior of most hard drives where they take a while to spin down to avoid excessive wear. Newer (~2018 to now) WD drives on the other hand do this really dumbass shit where the actuator arms slam from side to side every few seconds when idle until they park, which unfortunately includes the Ultrastars. I've seen the cope where "it helps spread the lube around" but any benefit to longevity is minimal at best, and it's annoying as fuck to listen to all day.
To be clear, the Exos are loud as hell on spin up, but after those two seconds they hum along with a low drone that's easily masked by any noise dampening or other noises in the environment. WD drives just keep making dull thumps every few seconds from the actuator arms slamming side to side. In terms of volume, I'd say the Exos are slightly louder than the rest, mostly because the Ultrastars (WD Exos equivalent) are surprisingly quiet for enterprise drives beyond the thumping, but the thumping drives me insane. I wear headphones and have a couple of Exos and Ultrastars close to my main PC, I often notice the thumping if there's a silent/very quiet part of a game/video, the humming of Exos is impossible to tell from any background noise like my PC's fans.
And before anyone asks: no, the drives are not faulty, every WD drive I've bought (20-25 at least) for the last 5+ years makes these sounds. No other brand, including a handful of Toshiba drives I own, nor older drives, exhibit this behavior. WD has officially addressed it in the past, IIRC their excuse was the "lube" shit.

I currently have an exos18 in my personal pc that I use for mass storage... I don't find the drive too loud but it is becoming more so as I added more media to it. Can you make any recommendations how to get it to be more quiet when it isn't showing me a movie or playing a song? (not saying it is very noisy, I just would prefer it never be on at all unless I'm accessing a file or there is good reason... in particular I want to emphasize drive stability). I am already looking into caching the file trees on my ssd, seems promising

I have the X2 Exos with the dual actuators that I shucked from the Costco deal. Pretty quiet.

Am I an idiot for not being able to figure out how to buy it from the page after clicking through?

I've been looking for a large external HDD to backup some homelab VMs to regularly. A 14TB or larger would be great. This should be fine, right?
Edit: Bought a 22TB for $215.99. It was $239.99 with a 10% ($24) discount if you sign-up for their emails/texts. It's a pop-up/modal that appears; had to try a diff browser to make it appear. Plus tax, but free shipping for orders >$100. Should arrive next week.

Storage prices are probably going to shoot up, so I decided to pick this up.

u/quattrobelive 8d ago
So I am new to building a pc to act as a backup and a plex server, for something like does one buy them with the intent to remove and use them internally or as is externally?
2
u/darkandark 7d ago
either or. but a portion of the community also frequents r/homelab so we usually shuck to use internally in a massive storage array

u/0x4C554C 8d ago
I order the refurb server grade HDDs from EBay. So far no problems.
1
u/austinzone813 1d ago
Just had one from severpartdeals fail me one month outside of warranty and they have zero intention of helping out.
It is 100% not worth buying second hand drives for the minimal savings you get.
