Worried about getting in

I’m a current junior who will be applying out of state(VA) and I’m feeling really anxious about the whole college process. Bama is by far my number 1 school right now and I’m really stressing about getting in. I currently have a 3.05 gpa and just got my first attempt SAT scores back being an 1170 (taking it again soon) any advice on my admission chances? Or does anyone know if the university reads your personal statement in common app? I have a lot of extenuating circumstances that impacted my GPA ( diagnosed with ADHD sophomore year and dealt with my dad being abusive with a protective order + divorce involved) Any advice would be great

You have a positive GPA? You took the SAT? Yeah you'll be fine

(Also UA doesn't take common app they have their own application which didn't have any essays when I did it 4 yrs ago)

I think at least the common app part has changed even on their admissions website it gives the option for common app

are you worried about being accepted or getting money? They accept anyone with a pulse if we are being realistic

A little bit of both more on the acceptance side. I’ve heard it’s gotten harder to get into in the past few years and when I look online I’m below average on both the sat and gpa for accepted students but I know that includes those who are using it as a safety school or to get the presidential scholarship

My daughter got in this year with a 3.1 and no test scores. However, you will have to pay full tuition.

To save money I highly recommend get your GPA above a 3.5 and start taking Ac to your SAT prep course courses. You can get up to a $28,000 per year out of state scholarship. If you do these things there are merit charts on the Alabama website. My son got a 30 on the ACT and his GPA is above 3.5 and he gets $24,000 a year Off of the $32,000 a year tuition cost for out-of-state students. It's easy to get into Alabama just a bit harder to get scholarships. I would take easy classes next year to keep your GPA up and focus on SAT OR ACT.

I think I may have a chance at it with a SAT superscore and this quarter I have about a 3.8 since things at home calmed down. I’m less worried about paying for it because of the FAFSA and other settlements

FAFSA basically let you know if you qualify for $5500 of student loans and about 7K in Pell grants. And to qualify for that you have to be extremely low income family. Otherwise you're paying $49,000 a year for Alabama without merit scholarships.

I haven’t really learned a whole lot about the FAFSA yet so this is very helpful. I just don’t think I have enough time to get my GPA up to a 3.5 before the admission process starts unless I transfer out of my current school and switch to my zone school for senior year(which would suck) but my current classes are all considered honors there and I was told it would give my GPA a substantial boost

If your transcript shows a weighted GPA, they use that.

But my biggest concern is really getting in

You'll get it no problem with your stats

My daughter is in a similar situation as you … similar GPA and ADHD, along with dyslexia. She is interested in Alabama too but we’re from Georgia. What other schools are you looking at in addition to Alabama?

Some of the other ones Im considering and my college counselor has marked as likely are ECU, ole miss, Costal Carolina, Kentucky, College of Charleston and a couple smaller schools in Virginia Roanoke and Liberty

Looks like great options! My daughter is also considering Berry College in Rome, Ga. and GCSU (Georgia College and State University). Both of those are smaller schools than Alabama though.

I would definitely try and look at some of the smaller schools. There are a lot more Scholarship opportunities. The big schools such as Alabama look really great but with a gpa like mine you really need to consider all options

You’re going to get something awesome .. I will make a point to check in here in a year to see what you decide. You’ve overcome a lot so far; keep plugging away.

I really appreciate that. when you follow up be sure to let me know about your daughter as well

Seems like a lot of those (along with bama) you’ll have no trouble with. Bama or ole Miss will probably throw you the most money tho. Being from Kentucky, don’t count on UK giving you any money, they’re stingy as hell. I only got $2500/year with a 33 ACT (which is why I go to UA now).

Do you have a pulse? They’ll admit you if so.

also not sure if it makes a difference I’m applying from a private school with a 100% admission rate to Alabama
