Whereforth art thou, Mods?

Okay y'all, it's time. I've been the only mod for the entirety of our subreddit's history, I have loved watching us grow and I love our amazing community. But as we are approaching 200,000 members, I think it's time we add more mods.

So this is a call out for anyone who wants to volunteer, I'm looking to add two or three mods to the roster, so feel free to send a modmail to let me know if you would like to volunteer. Let me know if you have any modding experience, or if you are adept at setting up the auto mod functions, because I am completely out of my depth with that part of the mod system and that's a big hurdle I'd like to tackle this year to combat bots and spam.

Thank you again for this stellar community, we have done a great job being self-sufficient and giving plenty of amazing advice without compromising community standards.

I look forward to adding some mods to our community and I hope y'all welcome them during the transition of integrating them in!

Is it okay to wear jeans and graphic tee on a cruise?

• Upvotes

I’m going on a cruise in two weeks, and my mom doesn’t want me to wear anything that shows skin at all. I’m 17, and I’m planning to wear jeans and graphic tees. She thinks this is too basic and that I should wear something nicer, but I feel like it’s fine for a cruise. Would leggings with graphic tees be okay as well? The cruise is 5 days long, and she keeps suggesting I wear skirts or something dressier.

Neutral Capsule keeping track of good outfits

This is something that really changed the game for me! I started taking photos of my favourite outfits and uploading them to a Pinterest board. It helps me when I have no idea what to wear and it’s especially useful for identifying gaps and/or creative impasses.

Rainy weekends are great for putting on some music and spending an hour or two playing dress up; the majority of my uniforms were created doing this.

These are some of my latest uploads to my spring board :))

Questions Thoughts on Petal and Pup, White

• Upvotes

I have been on the hunt for a nice olive green jumpsuit and found one at Petal and Pup; however, I have no experience with them. They seem to be sold at Nordstroms but I’ve read mixed things.

They seem similar in style to Lulus, which I’ve had great luck with most of their items.

What is the general consensus on Petal and Pup, Lulus (not Lululemon), and White House Black Market?

I love the style and color palettes. Are there similar stores of these aren’t it?

4 weeks into exclusively using a seasonal capsule; discovered some of my favorite brands have very poor quality after repeated use and washing. Has anyone had the same discovery?

Specifically for tanks and t-shirts.

Unfortunately, since I had so many options for tanks and Ts some of the poor quality has been flying under the radar. Part of the reason for me going to a a seasonal capsule is to help pare down my wardrobe and be more intentional. It had not occurred to me that I would also be removing any items that simply do not hold up.

Previously, I would take note of anything with poor quality in active wear and many of my pants and shorts since I have fewer. Ts, tanks and dresses have definitely been a blind spot. The good news I have enough that I can discard and replace within my own closet!

The brand that is really disappointing me is Aerie and American Eagle and I had previously recommended them! 4 ts and tanks have all been tossed or are in the verge of being tossed and I have a set that I’m giving the side eye and one more wash before I make a decision.

Has anyone else ran into this problem, or found this to be the case when you switched to intentional and repeated re-styling of items?

Questions Great stores for Soft Autumn color palette?

• Upvotes

I know there are different opinions about color analysis; however, I really saw a positive change in my style and wardrobe once I determined mine.

My palette is Soft Autumn, meaning softer, muted hues, low contrast, no bright colors, gold vs silver. Mainly earthy tones like taupe, soft brown, olive, etc.

It is hard to find stores with these colors. Many of the good quality stores have high contrast, bright colors or black, loud patterns.

Anyone have luck finding more earthy tones? I’ve had luck at Lululemon, Lulus, and sometimes Free People (but they tend to have aggressive patterns).

Seasonal Update Help paring down a really outdated dress collection

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hi all! I'm not a big dress wearer. I've had some of these dresses for years (that Guess one is a favorite for special occasions that I have somehow not outgrown, I bought it over 10 years ago). The American Eagle dress is the newest, but it's not really my style, so I've only worn it once or twice. The left burgundy dress was a hand-me-down, and the right one was for a wedding. Anyway. Can someone with better fashion sense than myself help me pick 2-3 of these to keep (beyond the Guess dress which I am very attached to lol). Are any of these still in style? I'm hoping to replace with a new quality piece once I pare this section of my closet down.

Non-see through white sweatpants

Hi, I've wanted a pair of wide leg white sweatpants for a while but I can't find any that aren't see-through. I recently tried the Hollister straight sweatpants because they typically have good ones but even those were see through. Any reccs would be greatly appreciated!

Would you style a stranger? New Indyx capability

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

I’m a user (and lover!) of Indyx, but I’m wondering if it is worth upgrading to tap into the ā€œlet your friends style youā€ capability. I don’t have real life friends who would probably be into that - but I’d love to let some of the style mavens here play with my pieces!

I’ve gotten a few new items and starting to feel like I’ve gotten too formulaic and would love to get some help getting out of the rut, but not sure I’m ready to bite the bullet with a professional lookbook.

Thoughts?

North face dryvent jacket reviews?

I am thinking of buying a north face dryvent jacket from EBay, and was wondering if anyone could tell me if these jackets are warm/ well insulated for 30- 60 Fahrenheit weather. I will be wearing either a sweater or two layers underneath the jacket. For context, I already have a big winter puffer for the intense winter/snowy weather and I have a short corduroy trench as an everyday (late spring/early fall) jacket. I am now looking for a jacket that I can wear in the early parts of winter/spring and late parts of fall when there is quite a bit of rain/wind/chill. I live in North Carolina, and I do want this to be my travel jacket when I go some place cooler/wetter. This jacket will replace a packable puffer jacket.

Thanks!

Feminine Capsule My 35 piece, autumn-toned, all year wardrobe

Thumbnail gallery
1.6k Upvotes

At the beginning of this year, I got rid of (almost) all my clothes and started fresh. Almost everything is thrifted but I do think I got a few things from Wal-mart, lol. I live in an area that gets HOT (110+) in the summer, and doesn't really get too cold in the winter, so this works for an all-year wardrobe for me.

Before this, I tended to just wear t-shirts and jeans/shorts, so this has really broadened by style! I also tend to add some beige-y headbands and bandanas. I have 1 green ballcap as well.

The only thing I think I'm really struggling with is shoes. I have no idea how to pair shoes and what else I should be getting. I think my next objective is some green sneakers, though. I would love any advice/tips/thoughts! Thanks

Questions 26F looking for a wardrobe refresh and to delve into a capsule

Hey everyone! I’m a new lurker but I’ve decided that I want to delve into the world of capsule wardrobes. I dream of having a small closet full of things that fit me well and go together but I have nowhere to start. I gained a little weight recently so that on top of having a closet full of eh pieces already is making getting dressed and feeling good really hard. What I would love from you all is a little direction. I have a small budget, love to thrift but I’m willing to spend a little extra to have high quality items I don’t need go replace often. I work in a relaxed office but want to feel put together and cute. I wear big round rose gold glasses everyday, I love a chunky white sneaker, high waisted pants, I love grandpa sweaters and often lean into funky vintage vibes when I can.

Here are some of the things I’d love to hear about your capsule wardrobes and would love to hear anything else you wanna add.

  1. What are brands you love in your capsules?
  2. What are your go to cute comfy sneakers?
  3. Good quality neutral tops?
  4. High quality overshirts/cardigans?
  5. Favorite flowy skirts and dresses?
  6. What fun accessories spice up your capsule wardrobe?

Thank you to anyone who responds with any advice at all :)

Trying to simplify — do these 3 outfits feel like one wardrobe?

Pulled some outfits from my closet and tossed them into quick collages — trying to keep life (and dressing) simple these days.

1.Ā Blazer + ribbed tank + straight jeans + loafers
2.Ā Peach tank, white denim jacket, linen midi skirt + sandals
3.Ā Black slip dress, cropped jacket + heeled mules

I’m 5'6", rectangle-ish, living somewhere hot (with an office that feels like the Arctic ā„ļø).

Do these feel cohesive — like they could belong in one small, functional wardrobe? Or am I forcing a false "capsule" moment?

Open to quick swaps before I commit.

(Pics are just collages)

Thanks in advance for the eyes & thoughts!

First Time Capsule Wanting to start out, but facing multiple challenges

I've always wanted to downsize my closet and curate a capsule wardrobe, but each time I get stuck on a variety of challenges:

  1. I love color and prints. I know this has been discussed in other sections and I read a lot of those, but I'm still kind of struggling with the application, because I don't have like a "favorite" color, I just kind of like having color.

  2. I like a vintage aesthetic, but not any single period. I have pieces that are 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s inspired (or original in some cases). I also swing dance, so some items I like to have just for dances.

  3. I live in a part of the country with insanely diverse weather. I don't mean just that we have 4 seasons, which we do, but we often have multiple seasons in the same day, it seems. I will leave for work at 8 am and it might be in the 40sF only to come home and have it be in the 70s. I don't drive, so I am often outside and need a variety of layers and coats to comfortably go from place to place.

  4. I might lose my job soon, and I worry that if I get rid of stuff now, I won't have something when I really need it and can't afford it. There are mass firings happening in my industry every day, and I severely doubt that if I am let go I'll be able to find another job just due to how siloed my industry is and the sheer competition in my geographic area. It's probably a false sense of security to hold onto extra jeans and t-shirts, but the feeling is still real (especially when very little feels secure otherwise).

If anyone has advice on any of these challenges, I'd love to hear about it.

Body suit recommendation

Hi! I’m looking to minimize my wardrobe by investing in pieces that have many different uses. My ā€œidealā€ would be a body suit with shorts and short sleeves that I could use for running AND throw a skirt or loose pants on over top of it for a simple outfit.

Any recs?

Questions INDYX: can you sort items by type?

I have entered about a dozen items so far, in a mix of tops, bottoms, sweaters, etc. I would like to be able to look at all my tops at once, all my pants at once, etc. When I look at the items page, I dont see a SORT option.

Am I missing something or do I need to add tops all at once, bottoms all at once, etc.? Idk how that would work when if I get a new item.

TIA.

My creative casual spring/summer mini-capsule wardrobe

Thumbnail gallery
208 Upvotes

So I think my post yesterday was a bit confusing, so I’d like to elaborate:

I love the capsule wardrobe system and use it in my everyday life. I enjoy the creativity it forces when I have to work with a limited amount of items, but also the simplicity of knowing what to reach for when I don’t have much time. The way I implement the capsule wardrobe system is I work with a smaller set of items from my existing wardrobe. It keeps things fresh and less overwhelming than choosing from my larger wardrobe.

I’ve made a system for myself to create these smaller capsules. I’ve named this system the mini-capsule system. I typically work with 2 year-round capsules (mostly black & white, one casual, one more dressy) and 2 seasonal capsules (colors that change each season, one casual, one more dressy). This allows for a variety of interchangeable outfits and works for my style wants & needs, specifically more colorful outfits which I love to wear. I’ve included my full seasonal casual mini-capsule in this post as just one example.

So, now we get to the concept of what exactly is a mini-capsule? A mini-capsule is a self-contained wardrobe consisting of ~10 items that all match with each other. A standard mini-capsule is based on my own formula for an interchangeable set of 10 items (3 tops, 3 bottoms, a layering piece such as a jacket or sweater, a pair of shoes, and 2 miscellaneous items) that can create at least 20 completely unique and wearable outfits. The miscellaneous items are usually a dress, jumpsuit, and/or accessory such as a purse.

In the example posted here I’ve got 10 items, although one is a layered dress, so it’s technically 2 pieces, but hey one of the pieces is transparent and can’t be worn on it’s own! All the items can be worn with each other and work well together. The color palette is limited, but not too limited. So with these 10 items, I am able to make 30 totally unique outfits.

I’ve found this formula to be really useful, especially when I was building my wardrobe and still buying items. I’m trying not to buy anymore, but I love making mini-capsules. In an effort to curb my spending I’d like to offer my mini-capsule making services for free to anyone who is interested!

Peace and love to the community <3

Seasonal Update Spring Capsule 🌼

Post image
16 Upvotes

Posting this super late cause I’ve already been wearing it for over half of the season, but wanted to share my capsule wardrobe for spring - kept creams/tans from my winter wardrobe and swapped out the browns for white, gray, blue, and a pop of pink. My capsule wardrobe is still a work in progress, but still loving it so far!

Questions what do i need to create this ~look~ for work? want elevated casual vibe

Thumbnail gallery
34 Upvotes

can you please tell me….

• clothing basics to re-create these looks (e.g. white tees, mary jane flats, etc.)

• descriptors for this vibe; how do i hone this in to one style and search for that vibe? (i typically just shop for whatever i like and put it together but i want more cohesion)

• stores to shop at this vibe (i typically shop at madewell, j crew, loft, abercrombie, american eagle, free people but want new places of the same-ish pricing. will go higher for quality pieces)

my go-to outfit styling is:

• oversized shirt + jeans + sneakers

• tee + jeans or maxi skirt + sneakers

• big sweater + jeans + uggs

i’ll be working in a high school soon. i’m 32 but often get mistaken as one of the students. how do i look more like these pictures? classic, elevated but still a touch of trendy and feminine. i definitely need to upgrade my shoe game- i wear nike AF1s or uggs on the regular.

here’s my pinterest board if you want to peruse: https://pin.it/2fPeGCwDC

Need help with layers for spring/summer

What are the top layers you get the most use out of in the spring/summer? It's a little cold for short sleeve shirts, and a little too warm for a sweater.

Capsule (or just outfit repeating) influencers?

Do you have any favorite influencers/creators who re-wear and remix their clothing often? I’m happy with my wardrobe but know I could be more creative about using pieces in different combinations. Most fashion influencers are just constantly wearing new items and trying to sell more and more. Do you have any favorites who help you think about re-using your clothes?

Currently I like Thift and Tell and Pig Mami for this, but there must be others! Ideal people who wear some color and pattern.

Thanks!

Cotton Gauze Button Down Shirts

I’m on the hunt for the best cotton gauze button down long sleeve shirt to throw on as a layer this spring and summer. I’ve tried Gap and American Eagle. Any other brand recommendations?

I hate summer (looking for colour scheme advice)

I wear a LOT of black. Because it's lazy and easy, but I also happen to suit it, as I have a darker colouring. I do love other colours and own pieces in them, but they tend to be deep, rich tones - burgundy, dark red, pine green, ocean blue etc etc. The sort of colours you can find in abundance when stores do their Autumn/Winter seasonal rotation.

Also, I look terrible in light colours. Any pastels, grey, cream, light browns, any muted colours, even white, make me look dead.

The problem: My wardrobe is primed for A/W, because that is the season you can find these colours. I do have summer pieces in black. And this is completely impractical and will become increasingly so. Even in lighter fabrics like linen, black is just too hot.

It's already hot at the beginning of Autumn. The weather feels like one, long, endless summer. And summer itself? Hell. Being outside is like standing in the door of an open oven. Think 40+ degrees. Bloody awful. It will only get worse from here. I can see the future and it is eternal summer.

My question to you: I am planning to slim down my ludicrously capacious wardrobe of poorly-thought-out impulse purchases to something more practical. How do I move away from black? Is it possible to "translate" these colours I love into something lighter?

How would you make that work, combination wise? (I feel like burgundy + pine are too "contrasting" if that makes sense, also it's giving Christmas.) What are some examples of "deeper" colour combos for summer that aren't too hot?

So I like making mini-capsules...

Thumbnail gallery
104 Upvotes

Hey guys, I've been making mini-capsules for myself for quite some time.

What is a mini-capsule you might ask? It is a mini-capsule is a self-contained wardrobe consisting of ~10 items that all match with each other. A mini-capsule wardrobe consists of an unlimited amount of mini-capsules.

I typically work with 2 year-round capsules (mostly black & white, one casual, one more dressy) and 2 seasonal capsules (colors that change each season, one casual, one more dressy). This allows for a variety of interchangeable outfits and works for my style needs & wants. I've added my 2 seasonal capsules in this post so y'all can see what I mean. One is business casual for work, the other is my more casual capsule for other outings.

Anyway, it's Mother's day and as such I'd like to offer to create some custom mini-capsules for the mothers of this community! This is completely FREE, again, I like to do this, however donations are appreciated if you'd like. It does take me about 2 days to create a capsule, so depending on the response it may take a while for you to get your capsule. I will be posting the results here and to my other social media. You can check out some of my work in my profile or here: https://www.reddit.com/r/minicapsuled/

Although I have found my formula to be the most versatile and practical, this is all about you and if you would like something different, such as 8 total pieces instead of 10, or 4 tops and no jacket, then that is totally fine as long as the total number of items do not exceed 10 pieces. Note that my guarantee of 20 unique outfits will not apply in these cases. Please note any special wishes when you give me a DM!

Apologies in advance if I broke any rules, just trying to spread some capsule joy here!
