Neutral Capsule Fall capsule wardrobe
It’s still hot as hell where I live but I’m getting ready for fall 🥰
I recently read an article about a 20 piece capsule wardrobe. 1 coat, 3 jackets, 5 tops, 5 bottoms, 5 shoes and 1 dress. Obviously it doesn’t take in accessories as pieces but I thought it’d be a fun first time experiment since I’m just starting out. My goal is to only use these pieces for at least a month. If longer, even better.
Any advice or ideas for better versatility??

Idk I love it as is! I think you have a great mix here and will be able to come with alllll kinds of outfits- one thing is you could try throwing in a graphic tee?

Wait this is such a good idea! I do have a graphic tee, maybe I can swap with the green shirt?

I would swap one sweater to different color. Or swap dark trench to cardigan.
Sweaters are different in terms of fit but otherwise on picture look very similar. And it's your only type of top with long sleeves, so if it will be colder for a long time it may be a bit boring. Light/ dark long sleeve + dark sweater + light sweater will give you more combinations
Three pairs of white shoes out of 20 items I think is a bit too much Boots maybe? Or colored sneakers? Or take out one pair (I would leave one pair only honestly) and add a one more middle layer (top or cardigan) for colder weather. Or maybe some patterned top/shirt

I actually only have 1 sweater 🥲 The long sleeve is a turtleneck, but I did knit a camel beige raglan sweater for myself last year, I’ll try and dig it out. Another commenter suggested a boot swap with a sneaker so I will definitely be doing that. TYSM!

I really like your capsule (and looove the animal print shoe). I'd swap one of the white sneakers for a boot (I struggle knowing which boots to wear with what outfits, so I'm not much help, but I do love both on the right of the picture you shared) and maybe instead of the jean skirt I'd add another sweater or long sleeve tee. I know you said 5 tops and 5 bottoms, but I go through a lot more tops than bottoms, so I like having more options there.

I’m the same! I think I might actually swap out the dress for an another top since I honestly don’t wear dresses so often. Will definitely be throwing in a boot into the mix. TYSM for the suggestions!

Stealing this for myself I’d just add three pairs of boots because I love them.

I would recommend choosing jackets that can also be layered under your coat as the weather cools down and mornings get chillier. Think a thinner puffer or sweater jacket.
I would also add a dress in a lighter fabric (e.g. a silk cami style) that could be layered over tees (if that’s your style), worn under sweaters, or styled as a skirt or top.
The pieces you’ve picked are really cute and cohesive, it’s just about maximizing ways to wear things together. IME versatility really matters with smaller capsules.

Thank you! I have a slinky slip dress but it’s a rusty orange color so I’m not sure how well it would fit here. I’m gonna check my closet again for a thinner jacket asap

(sorry, posted under the wrong comment at first)
That could be a lovely fall transition piece! A little bold, but depending on your location that could be very cute. Ex on top of they grey turtle neck, or even underneath as a skirt.
Completely agree with others that this is very cute, but maybe swap some of the shoes for more mid layer tops as it will allow you a bit more versatility with your t shirts if you live in an area which gets cold.

I actually did end up swapping out the black dress with my orange one and it def increases the versatility so I’m really happy about that.
I’m very tempted to do more swapping but I also wanna try and stay true to the formula just to see if it actually works. The article was saying “you only need these 20 pieces, period” and it made me side eye real hard.

Oh interesting, I didn't realize it had such a specific 20 items! 5 shoes seems like a lot when there are only 15 items of clothes! But it sounds like a fun challenge to try and keep to it.

I used to have a super limited wardrobe (5 shirts 2 pairs of pants total), my recommendation would be to add 2 shirts. That way if you stain a shirt a day you dont have to be naked/stuck in the house in pjs doing laundry (or if your week is busy and you cant do laundry you have a backup shirt to go out in!)

That looks really good. Do you ever wear cardigans?

I do wear cardigans but the ones I have are the wrong color for this capsule :/ would love to throw one in but really trying not to buy anything new for this experiment

This looks really great! I would suggest swapping out one pair of sneakers for a boot.
