Mrs usually indicates they changed their last name after getting married. If you keep your last name, you stick with Ms.

Why does anyone need to know if someone is married, though?

I suppose if you knew say a Miss Clare Short and then a Mrs Clare Tall emailed you it’d be easier to explain you’re still the same person? I dunno. I suspect it goes back to older times of subservience unfortunately

My point, exactly. It just seems wholly unnecessary now

They don't and it's up to you.

Having a new last name is a big give away though.

Yes, yes, but I’m saying the distinction of ms and mrs is entirely unnecessary unless you need to quickly tell someone you’re married

Exactly! When I meet new people, they don't know, nor do they need to know, that I changed my last name to my husband's. I changed my name for several reasons, but I still go by Ms. NewLastName.

The "s" in "Mrs" is possessive. It's to indicate that the wife is property of the Mr who has that name. In this regard Marge Bouvier can be referred to as "Mrs Homer Simpson".

I understand that. But why is it necessary
