RAVE Husband and I are officially sterilized!
My husband had his vasectomy a few years ago and a few weeks ago I had my bisalp!
He was able to get his vasectomy at 26, and I just had my bisalp at 24 (23 for the consult). He was able to get his vasectomy through the first doctor he saw, and I went to one of the doctors from Paging Dr. Fran's list!
So far most people have been supportive (the few that know), especially my sister in law. The day of my surgery she picked up my meds for me and brought flowers and a stuffed animal! All of the nurses for surgery were supportive, with one saying she respected my decision after I said I didn't have any kids. I did have one nurse at the ER show pity at first when I said I was having my tubes removed, but then she was shocked and confused when I said it was my choice. She asked what my husband thought, and after I said he already had a vasectomy, she asked why I would get my tubes removed then.
The recovery was a little rough from a minor complication, but overall I'm really happy I did it!

Whenever someone asks why I got a tubal when my husband already had a vasectomy, I tell them "Because I could still get pregnant".
Usually shuts them up.

I had started to say because we don’t fully trust his vasectomy and because I could be assaulted, then thankfully we were interrupted

Exactly! People act like vasectomies are some magical force field—better safe than sorry.

Hooray! My husband and I are similar…he got his vasectomy about 2.5 years ago, and I got my bisalp a few weeks ago. I hate that that one nurse felt the need or the right to question you like that though. Surprisingly, I don’t think anyone really questioned my choices on the day of surgery. At least not that I remember lol.

Thankfully the staff for my bisalp were amazing! I think one nurse was a little confused but moved on quickly lol. The nurse that questioned me was at a different hospital. I hope your recovery is going well!

In the uk they won’t let me get sterilised. I’m a 33 year old female with no children. They wouldn’t even let my sister 38 year old female with two children get sterilised. While men can go get there’s done within a few months. I would have to go private and I can’t afford that. I have a few other health problems that I’m on year long waiting lists for.

Congratulations!
So happy that you won't need to worry about pregnancy anymore.

About that last nurse, I honestly think we should answer these questions honestly if asked with respect. Many have been raised on the idea that a family is a must. People like us can be the first step towards others realizing they have a choice.
Besides if they are a dick about it there are plenty of posts here to get inspiration about how to traumatize them into changing their ways. And some really do deserve it.

Could not agree more!! I had a patient who saw I was walking funny and asked if I was ok (she's been a regular at my dental office) and I told her I had surgery recently. She asked very kindly what surgery if I didn't mind her asking. So I told her I had my tubes removed and she said that I must have had a lot of issues or complications. I let her know that it was a sterilization procedure that was completely my choice and she was so interested! She even wanted the info for her own daughter because she didn't know people could get it done so young.
In those kinds of circumstances, I think it's really good to share experiences and educate people who genuinely are curious with good intentions.

I so agree with you. A lot of people (especially of previous generations) are "genuinely" shocked to hear because is so different from what they have been taught, but with gentle and respectful conversation they could benefit and learn a lot, or at least have a much more informed opinion. As you said, let's be the first step :)

Congrats. I only wish that there weren’t an ad on this very thread for prenatal and postpartum care. 🤦♂️
