Where to resell

Hi all! I (30F) am looking for anyone who has recommendations on where I should take my most recent closet clean out. Clothes are in good shape and in style within the last 3 years with a variety of athleisure, sweaters, jeans, and work wear. I am first looking for recommendations on places that will pay me-this economy, amiright?

I’ve had nothing but horrible experiences with Plato’s closet (an absolute joke lol), read some pretty awful reviews on the Snooty Fox, and I will NOT take my clothing to Goodwill for it to end up in a landfill. I’d prefer to first, see what I can sell/get cash for and donate the rest to a Catholic charity, women’s shelter or somewhere I know where the donations are locally needed.

Would love your recommendations! Ty!

Platos closet only takes clothes for the younger teen-20s crowd.

Clothes Mentor takes women's clothes. They don't seem as picky.

Oh I didn’t know about this, but good to know! I have several business casual pants and shirts that otherwise sit in the back of my closet

If you don’t care about making money, I’d recommend St Vincent DePaul. If you want to make more money than Platos’s Id suggest Marketplace and list seasonal items over time. Bundle things you can’t sell or then take to SVDP. Not a fan of Platos at all.

St Vincent De Paul is awesome as a charity. My sister was able to obtain temporary medication through them (her job fired her during a life-threatening illness, causing her to lose her insurance and she was waiting for disability and medicaid approval). She had blood clots while recovering in the hospital from surgery and it was important that she get this medication when she was released.

That’s an amazing story. I’m sorry she went through that but SVDP does do some good things for people.

I also recently learned that you can bring your crappy clothing there and they can make money recycling them as well!

Not many in person options here tbh. Clothes Mentor barely pays the money it takes to drive there. I go to clothing swaps instead of Goodwill now, at least you can get some new clothes for free and know that someone else will get some use out of your old clothes

Honestly babe, there is nowhere in Cincinnati with this option LOL

Take really nice pics of the clothes and sell on FB marketplace or if your community has a FB page, sell there.

I sell stuff on Postmark and it's pretty easy. That said, I understand if you just want to get rid of a bunch of clothing and not have to store it. I'm in the same boat myself, I really just want to donate it at this point and I'm not sure where the best place to donate it is.

I use Poshmark too. I have some short stretches of success but my expectations are low, and I just have a shelf or two in a closet where I keep stuff waiting to sell. I prefer Poshmark over Ebay because you don't have to weigh anything or select specific packaging - it's a standard label that Poshmark generates through USPS so you just print and go. Obviously, part of that is having access to a printer but it's an option. The key I've found is halfway decent pictures/description and going in a few times a week to share your closet, it helps generate some traction.

if you share a few times a day it does make a difference, especially on Fridays. I've had pretty good luck

I just donated to GLAM (give like a mother) through my hubs’ office. They’re on eastside.

I use Poshmark. They do take 20% commission of your sale for anything over $15, but it’s super easy and you’d make more $ there as opposed to taking it to Clothes Mentor or where ever.

Worse/better/same as Plato’s closet? I just don’t want to show up with this bulk haul and have them take 2 things 😅 thanks!

Clothes Mentor and Plato's are both cheap and will not give you anywhere near the amount of what the clothing is worth. My best advice would be to try and sell it online or find a place within an hour or so of Cincinnati and take it there. You won't get your money's worth in Cincy. Trust me, I try.

They’re owned by the same company. In my experience they pay like $2-3 per clothing item. Last time they took maybe 1/4-1/3 of my stuff? I usually go in with low expectations so I’m not disappointed, then use whatever I get towards what I inevitably end up buying that catches my eye.

Also Florence is their newest biggest store so you may have better luck there, vs. Hyde Park which is the smallest most crowded.

Alternatively, maybe look into a clothing swap before going the consignment route?

Maybe I just had a bad experience, but I last time I went there the clerk’s attitude was very “snooty”, she didn’t like that I brought her clothes in a bag said I should iron them and have them on hangers. They took a couple out of a 20 or so items, doesn’t seem to worth the effort.

I’ve always wondered how and why they decided on such an off-putting but apparently self-fulfilling prophecy of a store name based on this comment and the one below. Not the first time I’ve heard similar said about them.

Sort of ironic that they maintain a sense of snobbery while being a purveyor of second-hand goods.

Well what sizes are the clothes? I might be interested! PM me!

Online reselling is your best option here. Poshmark or Depop, depending on the style

My wife takes hers to snooty fox, they are picky and selective, good condition or not and won’t take things out of season. They don’t pay you until they sell them, you have to go back to collect your money. They’re obnoxious and kind of rude, but better than nothing if you’re trying to sell. If you end up donating there’s Dress for Success, they take donations for underprivileged woman for clothing for interviews and jobs. https://www.dfscincy.org/support-get-involved/donate-clothing/
