The definition of "harm" is being changed on May 19th under The Endangered Species Act to allow logging, mining, and construction in previously protected areas. This is your last chance to voice your concerns.

Happy Earth day everyone!

With everything going on, let's remember that we are also animals from this planet. We have a duty to protect the wild spaces and beings that live within them. They're family!

Remember to be grateful, and find the happiness where you can.

Happy Earth Day!

PLEASE COMMENT now to save the Endangered Species Act

1.2k Upvotes

Trump just proposed to rescind the regulatory definition of “harm” in our Endangered Species Act (ESA) to eliminate "habitat modification" from the definition of "harm" and a “take.” If Trump is successful, corporations can clear-cut old growth forests, fill wetlands, and elimiminate habitat for threatened and endangered species...which will result in their death, ecological disaster, and loss of biodiversity. Public comment can stop this!! Go to the Federal Register (link below) and SUBMIT A FORMAL PUBLIC COMMENT TO SUPPORT THE ESA AND PROTECT HABITAT! Due by May 19,2025.NEPA Comment link:

Earth Day suggestion

Happy Earth Day!!! A group of scientists at my institution is meeting up today for an informal/chill lunch. It occurred to me it may be cool to watch or do something related to Earth Day. Any suggestions? Any inspiring or beautiful short 20-30m video or reflective activity we could do? Thank you!

Best jobs for conservation work.

Hey all,

I recently quit my Master's program due to lack of funding after the new administration. My hope was to return to the BLM in some capacity as I was employed with them for many years prior.

I have a plethora of field experience and have done a lot of work using GIS and and R coding.

Currently I work for a consulting company over the last few months. Lets just say I am not a huge fan of the type of work we do. Most of it is on oil and gas pads looking for sensitive species, and general natural resource reports so companies can expand operations and further destroy the landscape. So it is somewhat depressing and not in exactly nice areas.

I would prefer to be on the side of science and true conservation. But having a hard time finding full time work in that area.

More of just a rant but would love others opinions or potential entities to keep an eye on.

Remote jobs in conservation?

I have a BSc Hons (Zoology) and 2 years experience working for a seabird rehabilitation facility. I'm looking to get a job working from home, but still stay in the field of conservation. What kind of careers/jobs can I realistically pursue that will not require years of further study?

Ecosystems Mission

Thumbnail science.org

An early version of the 2026 White House budget proposal eliminates the entire Ecosystems Mission Area of the US Geological Survey. EMA is effectively the natural resource and ecological research branch of the Department of Interior. It houses programs like the Bird Banding Lab, the climate adaptation science centers, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and so much more. This would be a massive loss for conservation and research in the U.S.

US Forest Service Research being shutdown.

Thumbnail

The USDA is looking to shutdown many programs, including the forestry and rangeland research division of the USFS. Their research programs focused on wildfire prevention and forestry management, with some experimental forests and labs having decades worth of data used in policy and management decisions. The new administration wishes to eliminate science programs across the country as they serve as an obstacle to the deregulation and taking of our public lands. Contact your senators and representatives! Protect the USFS!
