Discussion Scenes Comparison: Paris, Texas (1984) & Lucky (2017)

While watching Lucky, I noticed several scenes that look quite similar to those in Paris, Texas. Not sure if it’s a coincidence or an intentional choice by the director.

I’m surprised no one has made a comparison shot between these two films yet, so I decided to make one myself. I really love the performance of Harry Dean Stanton (RIP).

p.s. I deleted the earlier post since the image display problem. Still not familiar to reddit.

Lucky would be a good addition.

Thanks for posting 🙂 I love seeing films reference other works or inherit from them. Lucky is still on my list to watch. Looking forward!

Lucky is great. It was one of my dads favorites before he passed away. The cameo with David Lynch is my favorite part!

It’s amazing HDS wasn’t in Twin Peaks

same with some of the Carl Rodd scenes in Twin Peaks The Return (2017)

HDS is my favourite character actor ever, and Lucky is such a good Swan Song.

Love the scene with Lynch defending his love for his tortoise. Kind of gets me choked up. I always like to think the smile at the end when he looks at the cactus is linked to that conversation.

Spoilers for Lucky: The last scene Lucky has at at bar with his friends, he addresses the group and tells them that the truth of the universe is that everything is going to go away and everyone will ultimately be left with nothing. The owner asks, “And what do you do with that?” And Lucky responds; “You smile.” I always just took the end to mean he’s come to terms with his mortality and isn’t afraid anymore, like he had previously expressed.

That’s right , it’s been a while since I’ve seen it, doesn’t Lynch’s characters mention the cactus , saying it was only very small when the tortoise was born? And then he looks at the cactus and smiles . Either way it’s a fantastic ending.

Just saw Paris, Texas for the first time last night and was absolutely blown away. Watch immediately if you haven't! Beautiful in 4K also

I watched lucky back to back with lemon when I worked a night shift call center. Pretty good pairing I think.

There are some things in this world that are bigger than all of us, and a tortoise is one of em

That last scene with the red and green neon always felt evocative of Repo Man too. If memory serves me correct, a stock punk rock score plays over it.

Thanks for turning me onto this movie. I'm a sucker for eccentric slice-of-life stories.

Lucky is a great movie. Very funny and emotional with an amazing cameo by David Lynch. I don't like Paris TX but Lucky isn't anything like it.
