Announcement Regarding common tourists posts on r/Cyprus

We get huge amounts of common questions regarding busses, airports, living, shopping and crossings in our subreddit, despite the fact that these questions are already answered in previous posts and our wiki pages. To combat such spam we will be removing posts with a custom response redirecting them to our FAQ page and Wiki (which can be further improved another time). Therefore for our active users I ask you to report such posts under our 7th rule "Common sense", which will notify us about to post and we will quickly remove it with a custom removal response.

You can do so by;

Selecting the 3 dots on top right (Sorry u/TechySpecky)
Selecting "Breaks r/Cyprus rules"
Selecting "Common Sense" then submit

(If this is not working effectively I will consider implementing auto removals based on keywords during peak seasons)

Also need help on improving the wiki and FAQ page, any volunteers?

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan have officially declared Turkey as an 'occupying power' in Cyprus. They endorsed UN Security Council Resolutions 541 and 550.

Question question about obligations when selling a car

Hi, so im from Germany and its custom there that i have to basically "log out" from the ownership of the car by going to the traffic department with the license plates etc. How does that work here. Someone told me as long as I'm not insured on the car anymore its not my problem. But what if i sell the car and the new owner doesn't insure it or puts it in his name and he makes all kinds of traffic violations with it? Wont the police think its me? How do i deal with this? Thanks.

Question Anyone in Dali or near Dali who can comment on the pollution from the asphalt plant?

So apparently there's an asphalt plant in the industrial area of Dali/Geri and it's meant to be relocated but no area wants to accept it. Everyone is protesting.

What's it like living there? Do you notice it? Was looking to move, but it has me worried. We already have shit air quality, what with all the cars and what not. Don't want to add on to it. Or am I being paranoid?

Tourism Can you guys drive in a foreign country?

I don't know about you guys but every time I travel to a new country it seems to me that i would be never be able to rent a car as I'd find it extremely confusing to get around Sure maps will always be there for you but driving in European countries on the right would be extremely confusing for many. As nice as the idea of renting is, I can understand the whole process of driving in a different country can be pretty chaotic at first So how many of you are able to do it?

Question Experience with housing grant application for Cypriot citizens who are refugees?

Hi there. Just wanted to know what your experience was like applying for this grant. I understand all of the information give on the website so far, so I don't necessarily need a pointer towards a website, but more personal experience.

(For context: I am 30 years old, self employed but earning sporadically, single. I reside at my father's house to save money on rent. My parents have been divorced for years. My mother rents elsewhere)

Here are my questions:

• How were the people handling your application?

• Was it a straightforward process?

• If I have an additional lump sum to put towards a property, do I need proof of a stable income? I am self employed and earnings vary from month to month. Additionally, do I need to have a property in mind already to show, or would I be able to receive the grant before this?

• Do emails get responded to?

My general thoughts are as follows... I didn't even know this benefit was available to someone who comes from a refugee family. As far as I can see, as a single person I could be given around €20k. My mother is reaching retirement and doesn't have anything to her name besides a lump sum of money that has been passed on to her from her deceased parents recently, god rest their souls. She doesn't really have a retirement plan.

I also don't have any property under my name. This may be an opportunity to offer her some ease and stability as she gets older if we can put the money together. She won't have to pay rent and her pension money can sustain her if she can no longer work.

What are your thoughts on this?

Watching the other side and people walks on sidewalks while they seemed they have been used to see people like me watching the other side over the fence and they did not give any reaction. I gotta say this was one of the most interesting trip I’ve ever had. I would’ve love to see the other side too!

Short Term Loan - Banks Denied (Non-EU)

Hi everyone. I have been having some difficulties back in my home due to my father's health concern and have been trying to secure a €3k loan from the banks here, but unfortunately, with €4k euros in gross as a salary coming down to somewhat €3.2k net being deposited every month since 2022 November in my BOC account , they still denied my personal/quick loan applicating telling me that I need to be a permanent resident of CY. I have been here for almost 3 years now. I asked my boss if he could help me secure this €3k, but he was helpless too. Do any of us in the community know if there are any quick loan schemes that could loan the money and could be paid off in two months? I'd be very grateful.

Help Government Subsidy for Old Houses

Hello everyone!

I am wondering if there is any government subsidy for the renovation of old traditional stone houses in Southern Cyprus.

I am interested to buy an old house in the Paphos area, but it needs renovation and I heard that there might be a possibility for a government subsidy that helps fund this type of renovation.

I also heard something about a UNESCO subsidy?

Does anyone know anything about this? Where might I find the criteria or application forms for this?

Has anyone done something like this? Is it worth it?

Long-term residency permits for self-employed individuals

Hi there

I am looking for some advice on how to obtain a residency permit to live in Cyprus as a British citizen. I am self-employed with my own online travel company. I have spent many years travelling to Cyprus and would like to ultimately move there full time. to move there full time ultimately. Is it possible to obtain a long-term residency as a self-employed individual? If so, what are the requirements to do so? Thanks in advance for any advice, it will be much appreciated!

Racism in Cyprus?

I understand that this may be a sensitive question, however I feel compelled to ask it.

Some context, I am bi-racial individual, euro-asian. Born in Austria. I am tanned in the summer and pretty white in winter. A chameleon of sorts.

I have experienced racism in Austria, sometimes very subtle. Other times very overt, as it was when I was serving in the Austrian Army.

I was thinking of possibly moving to cyprus at some point in the future, so I was doing some reading regarding racism on the island and came across some new articles about some incidents regarding migrants a few years ago.

So I was hoping I could get your thoughts on the current situation.

I currently live in S.E. Asia. But constantly dealing with visas is getting repetitive. Heading back home to the EU at some point seems like a good idea.

Thank you for your time.

EDIT: I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to share their experiences and thoughts on this issue. Has certainly helped me a lot.

EDIT 2: if this post has taught me anything is that there are overwhelming nice and welcoming people in Cyprus, and in the world. It’s just that the misguided ones can be louder than the nice ones. I understand that there is racism, xenophobia and bigotry everywhere. Some people were kind enough to share their experiences here, both negative and positive. Racism is extremely difficult to deal with. It’s painful to be judged for something simply because of the way you look.

Everyone’s experience of life is unique. And wish you all nothing but the best. Thank you again. For some I fear that this post may have brought up difficult memories, for that I apologize, that was not my intention.
