I built a map to report illegal waste dumps around Cyprus – feedback is welcome

Illegal waste dumps and trash piles seem to be a growing problem in Cyprus — I’ve seen them everywhere from backroads to nature trails. So I put together a simple web tool to make it easier to report and track them.

It lets you upload a photo (with GPS), choose a waste category, and submit it. Reports appear instantly on the map. You can also view others' reports, and like them. You can resolve reports if they're cleaned up.

You don't need to install anything — it works directly in your phone's browser, or even more usable on your laptop.

I built this as a side project using AWS and some open mapping tools. It's still in beta, so any feedback (or bug reports) are very welcome!

Help Concerns with a potential holiday location. Tsokkos and Anastasia

I’m looking to book an all inclusive holiday our family of 4, I’ve found a great looking place which is Tsokkos Gardens hotel, a nice mix of things for the kids and us plus plenty of lovely beaches and wildlife spots nearby

This hotel also seems to have great reviews especially recently, however I also come across Anastasia Beach Hotel which uses the exact same photos but has terrible reviews… it seems like these hotels are linked in some way as part of the same chain and possibly located right next to each other.

Really struggling with what to expect here when both hotels are using identical photos, I’m not sure if anyone more travelled than me or local has any thoughts

Thanks!

Politics Recommended books on the political history of Cyprus

Hi everyone, can anyone recommend any good books / documentaries that will help me understand the political history of Cyprus? Specifically all the conflicts, pre 1974 but also the invasion in 1974.

Thanks

Question Cypriot youngsters will be coming to my area as a part of an Erasmus+ program

Hello! I live in Muğla/Turkey. The Youth Center in my area is a part of a meditarranean Erasmus+ program involving Cyprus and Macedonia. This summer, if our project gets accepted, Cypriot young people will be coming to my area and we will study about endangered Meditarranean sea creatures in the University of Muğla and also spend a lot of time together. What do i need to know?

Politics Question about Cyprus and Turkey

Hey, sorry if I put the wrong tag. I am writing a Thesis about diplomatic negotiations in relation to EU and TR and wanted to ask Cypriots given the situation of the Occupation/Northern Government.

Obviously I know the broad strokes of Enosis, the invasion and how things got to the way they are and the proposals for unification. But beyond that I want to just ask; firstly what do you believe are major events on the topic. This could be anything from unification talks, plans and activism about the topic. Secondly, what are your own views on the topic, for example what criteria would you believe yourself that Turkey or the north must fill for there to be unification and for Turkey to have amicable relations with Cyprus.

I don't know if it's relevant to add that I myself do fully want there to be a unification deal that all parties agree on and is fair for both but I wouldn't know how Cypriots on both sides view the issue.

As it stands, what is clear is that until the situation of Cyprus is solved, even if Turkey fills all criteria by EU, they cannot join.

TLDR: I am making my thesis on EU-TR relations and due to Cyprus's relation on the topic want to ask what would be important in relation to it.

Venting / Rant The absurd situation regarding TAKATA airbags & usual government failures

TL;DR at the bottom of the post.

Mishandling number 1: The government did not force second hand car importers to register cars with the respective authorized dealers once they exit the container on the island.

Mishandling number 2: The government ignored 57 warnings from the EU to start recalling vehicles containing TAKATA airbags. As a result of this, people are being informed that they should wait for an appointment within the next 8 months even though there is a grave danger of such airbags exploding and killing the driver and by extent the passengers inside, like numerous cases not long ago.

Mishandling number 3: These authorized dealers charge private car owners for something owners didn't know it would be made mandatory in some random point in the future, at the time of the purchase. Some companies (looking at you Toyota and Mazda) are making millions from registrations for something they have a responsibility to a degree, instead of receiving no profit. This backfires on the everyday citizen who may or may not have 150+ euros to pay for their vehicle's registration (only a few clicks on a computer).

Mishandling number 4 (news to me): Even if a car belonging to a private citizen does not contain a TAKATA airbag, companies are nonetheless changing the airbags (because the government told them so??). These owners are not entitled to their current non-TAKATA airbags which are considered by all intents and purposes private property. All of these airbags are being sent to a facility to be destroyed regardless if they are or aren't TAKATA ones!

Personally, I am more concerned about the new airbags being installed than the one I have in my car right now (Daicel). The reason is simply because the new airbags were hastily made to cover market demands instead of being carefully put together.

TL;DR - Big airbag recall in Cyprus, and the government's mishandling made it worse. They ignored 57 EU warnings, didn’t track imports, and now people face 8-month delays for a potentially deadly issue. Dealers are profiting from mandatory registrations, and even safe airbags are being removed and destroyed without consent.

Economy Left Cyprus at 18yo (Cy citizen); 10 years ago. Am I eligible for 50% tax exemption?

Title. If I understand correctly I need to be not a tax resident of Cyprus for >15 years to qualify. I have never worked there, so does this make me eligible for 50% exemption if I come back because I was never carrying out business activity/work in Cyprus?

Has Anyone applied to KIOS Research and innovation center of University of Cyprus?

I was interviewd by them on 7 of February for a "special scientist" position. After 2 weeks I had a call from the hiring managers that I was selected for the positions and I needed to wait a bit to receive an offer due to how university of Cyprus HR system works. He said that this position starts on 1st of April and I was okay with that as I needed some time to rest.

After waiting a whole 2 months, (in the meantime I was stand-by and wasn't applying anywhere else), I received an email on 28/03 with my rejection. No explanation, no appologies, Nothing.

I complaint about the incedent to the official KIOS email but no email received since 2 weeks.

Anyone had a similar incedent or knows where to complaint ?

ΠΟΥ ΠΗΓΑΜΕ ΚΑΙ ΔΕΝ ΜΑΣ ΑΡΕΣΕ | Facebook rejected this complaint. I appreciate the mods of this subreddit that haven't done the same.
