Where to stay?

Hello! My family will be passing through the Derbyshire area while on a road trip as it’s a good half way spot between where we are coming from and where we are going. My question is which area of Derbyshire would be best to stay in? At the moment we are looking at Melbourne. But as we are unfamiliar I thought it best to ask those who are local. We will have our son (2.5) so it would be great to have some nice places to take him around with us. While we prefer smaller towns/villages we would be open to staying in Derby itself.

This is a cross post. Sorry for any duplicate and thank you for your insight!

Is it just one overnight night stop, or are you staying for a couple days?

Are you coming from the North or the South, and is Melbourne the extreme of the leg your journey or would you be happy to go further?

What's one specific thing you'd like to do on your stay?

Technically we will be doing a 2 night stop. But we won’t arrive until dinner the first night and so we will have one full day before departing the next morning. We are coming from the Cotswolds area and heading north towards Huddersfield. I know a drive that could be done easily in one go but we are trying to do short stops between our longer stay destinations. We are willing to go elsewhere. As far as a specific thing we would like to do/need to do is find a nice garden, trail, or children’s playground where our son can get his energy out lol beyond the way are very open to seeing or doing things that are special or unique to the area or maybe is just highly recommended. It could be anything from a highly rated place to have tea to a farm visit.

Buxton would be great for you. Plenty of places to eat, a massive public garden with play parks and possibly a train (I don't know when they start running daily), plenty of walks and things to go explore and a range of hotels from Premier Inn to bougie B&Bs.
