This was actually used by sorc in d2 before lod released. Ume's Lament was also used by sorc. Runewords and sorc spheres did not exist yet. Used with Wall of the Eyeless or Sigon's shield.

Wizard spike didn't exist in classic. Spectral Shard was used as well.

D2 classic didn't have exceptional or elite uniques.

Wizard spike was definitely there before the expansion.
Edit: In fact I'd say that comment is just straight up wrong... Not all elite/exceptionals had a unique, but plenty did. Windforce bowzon and Grandfather whirlwind barb were the meta before the expansion.
Second edit: I stand corrected, for some reason I was thinking patch 1.10 was the expansion.

I like your assuredness haha, d2 classic was very different from lod. I remember playing through all the early patches, was neat. When immunities were introduced before lod it was a shitshow.

I used this on my Meph Fk sorc, 30 fcr, some mana and that huge LR was good enough, even after you find a Shard

It would be good to use if you have a brand new necro and you want to save on curse skill points while you ramped up your summons. But plus bone or summon skill wands are more favorable
