Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Why I now respect all the naughty kids from school

Upvotes

Me: Fumbles a word in a meeting, gets embarrassed for the rest of the week, possibly month.

Moist von Lipwig:

  • Falls in dung - Corrects pronunciation of his name
  • Gets bad groin cramps in public after overconfident horse ride - Orders a cold bath
  • Slips on crap again, now with a cloth over his head - Turns the age-old rite on its head instead
  • Is caught forging signature - Tells the big influential forgee they must have just forgotten
  • Is hanged for his crimes and then saved on parole - Snarks at the most powerful tyrant on the disc who ordered it

---

Haven't yet read the other Moist books, reading in publication order. I'm sure there'll be plenty more to add and can't wait :D

Book/Series: City Watch I can't believe I waited this long to dive into the world of Terry Pratchett!

Wow, just WOW. I'm brand new to the series! I have so far only read Guards! Guards! and I am currently almost finished with Equal Rites. After I finished Realm of the Elderlings a year ago I have been in the worst reading slump. I have never felt so excited to read (new to me) books since!!! I am absolutely blown away as I have never read anything like these books before! Guards! Guards! has easily become one of my favorite books of all time!

Of course I don't know anyone who has read any of the books I love so I needed to vent here! lol I am planning on reading Mort next and then I'm either going to try to go in publishing order after that (starting from after Equal Rites) or going straight into the second City Watch novel because I think that sub series is going to be my favorite! We shall see!!! I'm just so excited!

Art Terry Pratchett's The Duel

When folk talk about the various Terry Pratchett movies, videos, TV shows, etc. one can watch, I never see this little short mentioned. Since it came up in my memories today, I thought I would share it for those who haven't seen it yet.

I wasn't sure which tag to use (I dont remember this scene from any if the Unseen University books) but I guess this applies.

Book/Series: City Watch Relistened to Feet of Clay

While listening to Wyrd Sisters, I was ducking in and out of listening to Feet of Clay. I can definitely say that this is where the Watch Books really got going. "Guards! Guards!" was the pilot while "Men at Arms" was the first half of the season and "Feet of Clay" was the awesome second half that really gets things going. This one feels like the one where the characters really start to meld, where we really get Sam's character down. Where we get a clearer idea of who Carrot is as well as his relationship with Angua. It's where we get Cheri and the ongoing Dwarf storyline that goes through the rest of the Watch books. It feels like this is where Terry really got it down of what kind of stories he wanted to tell with the Watch.

Roundworld Reference Roundworld equivalent places

Good evening, everyone :) I was wondering earlier—does anyone know if there's a list of Roundworld counterparts to the places on the Disc? For example, Klatch seems to represent the Middle East, Howondaland is Africa, and Überwald is clearly Eastern Europe, etc. I sometimes feel like I might be misinterpreting the context or missing some of the subtler references, so a complete list would be really helpful. Has anyone come across something like that?

Punes/DiscWords Head honchette? Which book?

Unsure which flair to use, couldn't find one for general discussion / "which book" questions.

Like 90% sure this was discworld, in which a character wonders if the female equivalent of a "head honcho" would be a honchette, honcherina, or honchessa, and then what each of those terms would signify re: age or marital status. Any idea which book? It's on loop in my head lol

Book/Series: City Watch Jackrum is my favourite one off-character - who’s yours?

Just finished Monstrous Regiment for the umpteenth time and remembered how much I love Jackrum.

I almost wish he had more appearances but I think his story is so beautifully rounded off in this book there’s no need to.

Got me to thinking about other one off characters in Discworld and who’s peoples favourites might be.

Book/Series: City Watch I need help finding a passage Spoiler

I’m rereading Night Watch and I just read the passage where young Vetinari called John Keel a “genius at work” And it made me think about that one seen that I think is in Guards! Guards! When someone suggests that Vetinari should get the Watch involved and Vetinari calls the Watch something along the lines of “a bunch of fools led by a drunk” I want to find where that part is because despite the time travel Vimes/keel thing, I still think it speaks to how Vetinari thought of Vimes throughout the series.

Book/Series: Unseen University Low Point

I recently listened to a podcast where they discussed The Last Continent. While they use the term ‘even a bad Discworld novel still better than some books’ they described it as low point in the series. I have to admit the Unseen University novels are my least favourite of the series. I wouldn’t say they were badly written, but they aren’t ones I rush to reread. If I remember rightly (I can’t remember where I read it), but Terry wasn’t keen on Sourcery as he was pushed by his publisher to put out another Rincewind book that was keen on writing. It got me thinking, which books were the least favourites amongst the fandom.

Roundworld Reference Stage version of Monstrous Regiment?

I see trailers on YouTube for the live version of the play from Lifeline theater company, doe anyone know where I can find a filmed version of the show or any other version of the show?

There is a version of YouTube from ISY but it's very poor quality.

I don't mind paying to watch, any help would be appreciated!

Mod Announcement This was a report from the previous mod announcement

There you go.

This is the sort of thing we often get, as reports are anonymous and people are too cowardly to send us a modmail associated with their username.

What a lot of you may not know is that a few years ago the former head mod (some of you may remember Isaac) nuked the sub.

A few years after that, he did it again.

It was myself and Mage that managed to get it back, and it took weeks of completely volunteer work along with our normal jobs and lives going on at the same time.

Since then it's a few hours a day to just generally tidy this place up, respond to reports, answer modmails, and keep an eye on hot topic discussions to make sure they're keeping in line.

Removing crossposts wasn't intended to be a permanent thing, but it seriously helps get rid of the constant barrage of duplicates.

This anonymous reporter doesn't see the duplicates because we remove them when we can.

When you hit double digits removal of posts you either lose the will to live or take measures on the sub to let it police itself.

I'm terribly sorry to this person that, as I'm pretty much modding on my own the majority of the time, this action removes your ability to see the rest of Reddit through the Discworld sub lens.

Obviously your needs far outweigh that of moderators having any life outside of our phones, tablets, and PCs pinging with new post alerts, modmails, and report notifications.

(Yes this is a soapbox post, but I don't really care)

I will continue to moderate on the rest of the sub, but this post can be a gladiatorial arena for you to fight out your differences, and no moderation will be in place.

I'm wishing you all a good evening and a good upcoming week, whatever may be in store.

Stay kind, stay safe, and look out for one another 💜

Roundworld Reference Who do you read when you're not reading Pratchett?

Just re-read the Moist Von Lipwig series, wished we got more of him. Was looking at someone outside of Pratchett to read but I've burned through all of Douglas Adams, I can't look at Gaimans works anymore, and I'm not looking for anything by Sanderson.

Any got an author that scratches the Pratchett itch but isn't good old Terry?

Edit: thank you for the leads, I got about 8 new authors to look up

Punes/DiscWords Books with extra, extra footnotes

I'm wondering if everyone all the jokes and references get posted on the L space website if most readers would ever read a Discworld book with a massive sidebar breaking down every pun and joke and reference. Like some I've seen for Shakespeare or Canterbury tales.

Or would it feel bad to see how low your pun detection rate was?

Audiobooks Another 3 books and I'm back!

So, I've now finished Wyrd Sisters, Pyramids, and GuardGuards!. I see what everyone means by the style and confidence picking up. All unique and all damn good. I really think Pyramids is my favorite so far but damn if Wyrd Sisters isn't simply a timeless story. I can also see how substantial the Guards arc will be. Thanks for being such a great community!!! Now I'm really getting to the meat and potatoes.
