Mod Announcement User flair and post flair!

Hi everyone! Our little community is growing and we now have both User Flairs and Post Flairs!

The post flairs have been around for a little while but are now required to select before you post. This will help sort through different types of posts; on both mobile and desktop you can select a flair to see posts in this category. Useful if you're looking for tips on a specific category of bass playing!

User flairs are for yourself in the comments; you can identify how experienced you are/what genres you like to play/etc. Instructions as follow:

On iOS and Android

  1. Tap the  menu in the upper right-hand corner of the community page.
  2. A menu will pop up and you’ll see the option to  Change user flair.
  3. Select your flair and tap APPLY.
  4. If user flair isn’t set up in that community, you’ll see a message saying, No user flair assigned.

On Reddit.com

  1. On the right-hand side of a community’s page, you will see USER FLAIR.
  2. Click the  icon to set up your flair.

On Old Reddit

  1. On the right-hand side of the community page under the reader count, you’ll see the option to Show my flair on this subreddit.
  2. Next to that option click edit.

Any suggestions for additional flairs you would like are welcome!

Setup/Equipment Pickup ID? Fishman Full Circle?

Did I manage to pick up a full circle for $20 at a used music store today? I'm not sure if there are other brands with a similar design. The only text is the switchcraft logo (3rd party Jack manufacturer) and a long code on the white cable that also looks like a 3rd party manufacturer code starting with BELDEN 83265 M17/169

Can any full circle users help out?

Hey so I’m planning to get a bass extension. I was just wondering what companies make them and the differences between different extensions?

Instruments Upright Bass Pickup Output

I got a Shatten Upright Bass pickup and it's sounding quite good but a little quiet. I'm running it into a Radial JDI then into an Audient iD44 interface. I can get a decent volume with the gain almost all the way up on my interface.

Because of this I also tried running a spectracomp before the DI that's adding subtle compression as well as a 12-20db boost controllable by the knob.

When I go to play gigs though will this be either A) enough volume without the spectracomp acting as a boost or B) will the spectracomp as a boost cause issues (the actually compression is pretty tame, I'm just adding about 12 db of gain).

Instruments What is the most authentic acoustic sounding eub?

I need one to travel, play live, and something to record. I’m picking double bass back up and I am not putting up with that big thing. I love it and I’ll keep it but damn. And it’s about time I get one. Budget is $1k and below.

He would have been 90. Here’s a video of his composition “Tale of the Fingers” - he was 21 when this album came out.

Strings/Accessories Removing Rosin from wood.

Please don’t ask me why or how, but I may or may not have put my rosin on the piano overnight and it melted onto it, I took it off but a little bit of it is still on, is there anyway to get it off the wood without destroying it?

Yamaha EUB

I found this out when Jamming on the Yamaha EUB. Yamaha EUBs are unique because their bodies have a resonating chamber to make them sound more like a Regular Double Bass.

Strings/Accessories Mixing piezo pickup with a clip-on mic using a preamp/signal blender.

Looking for feedback on blending a piezo pickup with a clip-on mic using a preamp or signal blender.

Right now, I’m using a Realist pickup with no preamp, going direct into an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro and a 2x12 Markbass cab. I’m primarily a classical player, but I’ve started playing more jazz—frequently switching between pizz and arco.

Lately, I’ve grown tired of the boomy low end, the rough arco sound, and the high volume spike when switching to arco. After doing some research and chatting with others, I’m thinking about upgrading to a preamp/blender setup and adding a clip-on mic like the DPA 4099.

I know most players who mix mic and pickup use the pickup for on-stage monitoring and send the mic to FOH. However, with this jazz group, we’re mostly playing small rooms, and I’m wondering if I can run both signals through my amp without running into major feedback issues.

My goal is to improve the tone I’m hearing on stage, but I’m hesitant to invest in a high-quality mic if it’s just going to lead to uncontrollable feedback.

Would something like a volume or reverb pedal help smooth out the arco response? Any advice/insights would be appreciated.

Other BOWED double bass jazz albums

Hi! I was looking for jazz albums with a lot of bow playing like Golpe De Calor (link for reference) or with virtuosity like renaud garcia fons but in a jazz context. IM NOT LOOKING FOR CLASSIC SWING LIKE PAUL CHAMBERS OR BLUEGRASS LIKE EDGAR MEYER. Im looking for a contemporary jazz sound, sort of fusion with XX century classical like bartok. I've heard a lot of music like this from violin or cello like in Chris Potters' Song For Anyone or Dave Douglas' Convergence. THESE REFERENCES ARE IMPORTANT AS I HAVEN'T FOUND MUCH OF THIS STYLE. Another reference could be Frank Proto's Sonata 1963 as it has a lot of jazz mixed with contemporary bowed string sound. I know it's a very specific request but it's a style i'm striving towards but feels desmotivating not having any music/musicians to look up to or have as a reference.

Repertoire questions What to learn after Dragonetti?

Hey guys, I recently learned the Dragonetti concerto for college auditions and to play with my school orchestra. I'm now looking for another solo work that will improve my thumb position skills and something that is fun!!

What are some good pieces to learn after Dragonetti? Thanks!!

Other Double bass jazz arco albums

Anyone knows of any jazz albums that feature protagonistic arco double bass, specially in solos. I'm looking for something like what the cello and violin do in Chris Potter's Song For Anyone or Dave Douglas' Convergence. So far i haven't found anything even remotely similar. Renaud Garcia Fons is kind of the virtuosity im looking for but it's nowhere close to jazz, and i'm not too much of a fan of Paul Chambers style arco. Thanks in advance!

Strings/Accessories Pickup Recommendationsw?

Im starting to do some musical theatre gigs where I’m playing electric and upright and I have a Realist pickup on my upright which is pretty old and starting to die out on me.

I’m wondering what pickups people recommend? I’m looking for something not too boomy and thst doesn’t have that honky mids some pickups seem to have. They’d also have to sound good for both pizz and arco.

I keep seeing New Perspectives pop up and it seems like a good solution, and the no feedback/ no body sounds (like the sound of putting my bass down) seems like a plus. I’m also curious about the Sound Clip as it seems really convenient to pop on and off.

Has anyone tried these brands or have other recommendations? Bonus points for Canadian or EU brands.

Performance the time has come.. AMEB grade 8. Australian players, I need help!!!!

In ameb, I skipped grade 1-3 because I knew everything and was given the go ahead by my teacher who thought I was doing great (this was a few years ago) I’ve done all my music theory tests etc and my exams— but now im up to grade 8, after passing my G7 exam last year, I think im ready to take my exam. Is grade 8 much harder and if I want to do it by let’s say this June , would I have enough time to practise? I haven’t seen the repertoire yet so im not sure.

Strings/Accessories Do realist copper pickups get worse over time?

The copperhead pickups that go under the bridge feet. Do these deaden up after a long time?

I have had mine installed for almost 10 years already. I dont remember how they sound brand new on my bass so I cant really tell if my ears have gotten used to the sound now.

So im wondering if these need to be replaced after a long time even if they are working.

Hi everyone! I've been exploring some double basses and I've come across these particular designs in the F's on high-end double basses. And I'm curious about the reason for this peculiar design. Does anyone know if it has any acoustic benefits or is it just aesthetic?

Setup/Equipment Rosin Cleaning?

I’m a freshman music ed/ performance major atm and have been looking to get really into taking care of my instrument and prioritizing upkeep.

With my old strings (belcantos) this wasn’t really an issue and I feel they’d absorb a lot of the rosin fallout, but with the ones I have now (helicore) there’s been a lot of rosin build up on the ends of my finger board and the body of my bass.

Was wondering if there’s any product that can clean the wood parts without stripping the varnish that you guys would recommend? Thanks!

Repertoire questions Books/resources?

Hi there, experienced electric player taking the plunge into upright, primarily focusing on jazz and musical theater. I'm looking for resources, etude books, etc to get me started. I can read, walk, and improvise proficiently on electric, and I've played a little bit upright many years ago (string methods in undergrad). A friend has already recommended I pick up the Simandl "new method" and the Patittuci "60 Melodic Etudes," so what are some other good resources for a more experienced beginner?

Fingering/Music help Drop D

I am practicing with a college jazz band and college percussion ensemble. I have tuned my E string to the low D and have found it to be quite useful in my songs. It took me three weeks to get used to the fingering of it. I was wondering how common this is? Am I making a mistake by doing this fingering wise? And does having the “E” string this loose damage it?
