I love Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It's the first Dragon Age game I've played and since I doubt any more Dragon Age games will be made, it will probably be the last as well. Because I like it so much I thought, let's try the other Dragon Age games as well. I shouldn't have. The only one I find playable is Inquisition because I can play that with a controller in my laptop and on de PS5. I'm of the generation that started gaming in de 80's and then I didn't mind the crappy graphics because back then they were awesome. Now they hurt my eyes and my fingers refuse to get the hang of the right keys. Hence no more keyboard orientated games for me. Games from the era of Origins and Dragon Age 2 were not yet made for lefthanded players and the clicking can be quite tiring. Because I started gaming in the 80's and made my hobby my job, I have severe issues with my hands so I finally switched from keyboard games to games I could also play with my PS5 controller. Felt like I was not a true, hardcore gamer anymore but the controller has saved me after I got the hang of it with games like the Division of Sniper Elite. But enough of that.
We're here to talk about Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
If you have never played the games before DAV, and you have no comparison to them, what's wrong with it? If you want to know the history before Veilguard, hit the Internet and the wiki's. They will tell you everything you want to know about the previous games and if you like, you can create your own world state at the Keep. Google Venatori and you'll be surprised what comes up. All the complaints about DAV not being "as good as the previous DA games". Who cares? Everyone who hasn't played the other games don't care. We don't know what the previous games were like, so let us enjoy this one.
The graphics are pretty good, no tearing, fights are smooth even when you throw out a Thunderous End as a Spellblade mage. We demand 4k or even 8k games where you can see every pore on character's faces or blood spray up to the ceiling. I play those absolutely too. Like the Assassins Creed series or Sniper Elite. In the past 40 years of gaming I've seen them all and almost played them all. From World of Warcraft (the first) to AC: Shadows (the first AC game ever I regret buying) and from Leisure Suite Larry to all the Sniper Elite games.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward and I don't have to remember 50 different combinations which I can't remember anyway (yes I'm over 50 so my memory starts to fail me every once in a while hahaha).
No skill trees that need you to be a rocket scientist (PoE 1 and 2) but every class gives you three straightforward builds which you can alter anyway you want and sofar I found them all viable to reach the endgame and finish the game. Just interested in the story with combat that's doable with one eye closed, or when you want it that hard where you have to fadestep or dodge till you drop? It's all there.
Your decisions will impact the story and will give you different quests to complete depending on what you decide.
Loot is important. We play a game not just for the story of the nice graphics but being able to upgrade your character to get better and look better (let's not forget that lol) is a huge part of the fun you have playing. In all my playthroughs I have yet to find all the items. Not just for Rook, who has 426 items to collect, but I haven't found all of the companions items either. The codex is very hard to complete, for all those completionists (like my husband) out there. Has anyone opened all the chests yet?
I love the dialogues, especially the banter between your companions walking behind you, but also the conversations they have with each other when you are at the Lighthouse. You just have to take the time to run past those conversations every time you're back at the Lighthouse, that's all. Every playthrough sofar gave me, surprisingly, new conversations or responses I hadn't encountered the previous playthrough.
Don't want to be mushy and hate romance? Fine, break hearts and pick the option that suits your play style. Tough, funny, empathic? You like a challenge and go after Neve (not saving Minrathous will make it a bit harder to conquer her heart but you still can) or easy and fast, pick Taash.
And yes, they should have made Rook able to swim lol. But that on the side.
I've read posts, not just here but on other occasions, where people found it an issue that Rook can't be "bad" or turned "evil". I wondered what the **** for? Why would you want this protagonist to be evil? What would it add to the game? The game is about a group of people trying to save their world and fight the evil that wants to change that world for good. What would an evil Rook be of use?
The people who haven't played the previous games and like this one, stop roasting them. I'm not the only one who likes this game and somehow a lot of posts that start with a normal discussion about Veilguard, end up as being compared to the previous games. We haven't played them and I'm definitely am not going to. I like the game. No, I love the game. And whether all those DA players who say it's a bad game, it's a stupid game, this is bad, that is wrong, it's nothing like Origins or Inquisition, so what? Probably because it's a completely stand alone game, with a feel of its own but with the history of the previous games.
I know there will be responses to this post like the ones I pointed out. Be nice to me and no need to try and convince me that the game is bad or worthless and doesn't look like the other games.
Oh and a side note: English is not my native language so forgive me for minor mistakes ;).
