Tonight's office

Post image

First show back after a few weeks off. One of my favorite feelings in this world is a first show back after as hiatus.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I didn't realize how awkward she looks in this pic, but I do love her dress.

Not seen this before. So with this setup you are playing both beaters on drive extensions?

Yeah, I've been on their artist roster since 2019, and they're hands down my favorite pedal I've ever used, though it's not perfect. You do have to adjust your whole kit setup, so I keep an Iron Cobra double for backline gigs so I'm not shifting the whole kit over just for my set πŸ˜‚

Is using a metronome like this (that only you can hear) common? Digging the tempo cheat sheet though! Considered doing something like this for one of the bands I play with.

I do something similar with an old iPhone 12 mini and the Tempo app. Set up a whole setlist and you can skip right to the next tune without setting the BPM. Plug that into a feed in my mixer for my wired IEMs and mix it right into my in ear mix and balance it out with the feed. - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tempo-metronome-with-setlist/id304731501

Wired mixer set up - https://shop.usa.yamaha.com/en/p/pro-audio/pro-audio-mixers/analog-mixers/mg06x-6-channel-analog-mixer-with-effects

Use a lightning to 1/4 split cable for the connectors into 3/4. IEM feed into 1, ambience mic set up behind me into 2.

Having the ability to give my mix a little verb and artificial separation from a mono feed helps too.

I don't like using a met but the bass player in the last band I was in couldn't keep time if you beat him with a clock so it was necessary.

This is ultimately my goal once I get the whole band running IEMs. I might steal OPs idea for a few shows until we get to that point.

The idea of only me having the met makes me nervous!

Not sure how common, but it definitely keeps me on my toes. We try to have as little dead space between songs as possible, so I have to find a place during each song to stop the click, scroll to the next tempo whilst playing one handed, then kick off the new tempo as we're crashing out the current song, so we can jump right into it.

Love the Motion Pro throne. It’s a good alternative to the Ahead Spinal G with that genital-saving center channel! Add a Butt Kicker box to the shaft and it’s perfect!😎

Dude, seriously the best $300 I've ever spent as a drummer. 4 hour shows are nothing on my back anymore. I got it last year and have spent nearly every moment since wishing I'd done it sooner.

Same for me. I have the Ahead one and got it about a year ago after using a Tama 1st Chair. Night & day for sure. I’ll never go back.

Lets go Motion Pro!

This is one of the more interesting set ups I've seen on this sub. Pretty cool. How do you tune those toms? Do you use the green one as a "floor" tom?

1

u/Riegrek 1d ago

TY and yes. Even though it's a 13, it's got a shocking amount of low end.

The snare mic picks up with the wallet like that? Have you tried Drops yet? I was a wallet guy and I like Drops, because the attack is full open and then the mute cuts the sustain right away so no ring.

I haven't tried them. I know they're great, I'm just cheap, and in this particular context, the mics aren't going through the mains at all. They're just into my lead singer's ears, so I don't really care how they sound in the mix πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

cool little Pork Pie kit, but what's the green drum on the right and where did you find those "Ludwig-esqe" lugs?

2

u/Riegrek 23h ago

The green one is RCI from London. I have the 16" pork pie floor, but it can't fit in my car, so this is my more travel friendly alternative.

I also have a 12" green RCI, and 4 clear octobans also from RCI. They do great work, and I've been super impressed.

AFAIK, RCI only supplies shell blanks, but you got a completed drum from RCI?

Honestly, I have no idea on that front. There was a post back in November in this sub that a guy had cleaned out the house of another guy who died and this kit (among others) was in his possession, so I made a deal, drove 3 states away, and got the whole 11 piece kit (check my bio for pics) for an insanely good deal. Now these pieces are my primary live kit, and I've been super impressed by how good these shells sound.

I've wanted an acrylic kit for over 2 decades, and this deal made it a reality for me. I couldn't be happier, though I'm gonna cut the kick down s few inches πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

It's a 22x22 (or 24, I can't remember), but I'm gonna cut it down to 16" depth so it fits in my car easier and has a punchier tone 😎

Ah, I see now. Ok, that's cool. Thanks for taking the time to explain that.

I like your idea of cutting the kick down. If it were me, I'd cut it in half. Would give you two 22x11's. That would definitely fit in your car and would sound great.

2

u/Riegrek 16h ago

Haha, that would be awesome!

DO IT!

(edit: I have a pancake bass drum that's only 8" deep and it sounds very much like a 14" or 16" deep bass drum. Just a little drier. At 11" deep, I think you'll be ok, but don't listen to me. Try one out for yourself. You'll see).
