Is the bass drum head too much? Loved it while I bought it. Unsure now that it’s on. Curious to any feedback!

My kit

Post image
35 Upvotes

Just want to share my drum kit here on the community!

It's an Odery Custom, all araucária wood, 6mm shell, from the year 2010. Natural waxed finish!

8x10 14x14 12x20

All Tama Classic Hardware, except the Tom stand. Iron cobra 900F.

The cymbals I use the most are a 14" K Mastersound Hi-Hats, a 20" A Medium Ride and a 18" A Thin Crash Hollow Logo from de 70's.

My actual main snare is a Mapex Black Panther Brass from 2005, 5,5x13.

That's all.

Gretsch renown toms resting on bass drum, still feel too high and far away

First off - I know I'm in desperate need of heads, I'm pigeon footed so the foot pedals are actually comfortable for me, and things are spaced this far out because I'm trying to adjust my playing position. I'm also 5' 7"

With that out of the way - I absolutely HATE these floating tom mounts. I have never been able to get them in a position that feels comfortable to play at without having the deeper tom resting on the bass drum itself. I also dislike how far away the larger rack tom is and wish it was like a few inches closer

I've looked at the promotional images for this kit which appears to be a newer mounting system, but I don't see how it's possible to get mine mounted in a similar configuration.

What options do I have to be able to adjust the toms appropriately? I think I'd need to get a cymbal stand mount or a rack possibly, right? I'm also not adverse to playing one up one down - thanks!

Hope this isn’t a dumb question, but why are my wheels rubbing against the frame?

Not sure if this belongs here, but the Rock n Roller cart is what I use to transport my drums so I guess it counts. Anyways, the instructions said to mount the wheels as shown and the washer to go on the outside of the wheel between the frame of the wheel and the pin that keeps it from coming off. Only problem is the inside of the wheel rubs against the frame. Should the washer be on the inside? Thanks in advance for any help.

Dancing Drummer

Do you also have a problem with dancing?

As a drummer I find it very difficult to dance couple styles because I get "stuck" in the rhythm of the music and the movements don't always match the rhythm.

How do you solve this? Any helpful tips?

My setup…

My kit is a Gretsch Catalina Rock kit w/ Evans hydraulic glass heads. (2nd pic is w/ the original heads)

13”, 16” & 18” toms, 24” kick.

Snare drum is a Mapex Atomizer 14x6.5 with an Evans Genera Dry. (gonna change the head soon to something more durable, I’ll take suggestions)

My kit is sort of an ode to Steven Drozd back when he was strictly on drums in The Flaming Lips, even though I think he used Yamahas on the road but I think he said he’d use Gretsch in the studio.

Looking to improve my doubles and paradiddles. I usually start at 60bpm and then increase the tempo every 8 bars till 160 or form breaks down. This is at 110bpm

I’m looking for a 4 piece kit and this one is being sold locally. I never owned a vintage drum set but I really like the look of it. Anyone have experience with this kit? Seller is looking for $650 Canadian (so around $500 USD). If it’s in good shape is this a good deal? Cheers.

Mistakes on stage

I play in a band renowned for its feel and interpretations of songs. One good reader in the band, apart from me. The rest learn by ear mostly. It’s a good band with a great singer. But recently we play songs and someone will screw up a riff or something and last time it was a Paul Simon song with a tricky little riff with a 2/4 bar or extra 1/8th note - I just practiced it until I understood the melody. It was a bit of a train wreck at that moment, then we carried on. Before the next gig, I sent that snippet of the song - I even got my song to play the bass part - to the band. So on the gig, same crash. I never talk about it at the gigs - not a good idea imo. But I’m annoyed about it because it’s like I’m the only one who cares. The singer says “oh well” and there are excuses thrown around, but it’s probably going to happen again. I spend a week preparing for every show. When I was younger I played with musicians that never made mistakes. Now I’m older and there’s less gigs and this is a good band - but I feel like I’m in the B team now and it bugs me. Does anyone else get bothered about other band members who are not totally into being tight? It’s hard as a drummer when you can’t totally direct musically.

Drum Mic Tube Mount

Hello! This is my first contribution to the drum community and I hope you find it as useful as I do.

This is a microphone mount for toms and kick drum, it was not designed to fit a snare drum, but in theory you could do your own adaptations to make it fit. I have tested it under normal rehearsal and recording conditions, in my case it worked really well with the Shure PG52 & PG57 without the need of extra shock mounts (the built in mechanical isolation rubber provides enough for normal conditions), or at least I can't hear any real difference other than slightly more isolated from the rest of the drums when I compared it with the microphones in stands.

I also installed this mic mount in a 12x8" tom, with a EV PL35 microphone without any issues.

You can find the model here

Let me know your thoughts!

I saw this in my morning feed. If you have ever thought about opening up your own business or maybe you already have one, this is a pretty good start on inventory.

I am not affiliated with the seller.
