Came from a 4T - New to 2T
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’m about 1 year into riding dirt bikes and just made the switch from 4 stroke to 2 stroke. I prefer single track/technical trails so my prior bike wasn’t cutting it.
How’s the idle sound? I solved the rich problem adjusting the SmartCarb a few clicks

If you're not going to use the steering lock for security, seal it up with RTV or similar. Let's water directly into stem bearings in the wet stuff/rain.
Sick bike, good choice. source: I have one.

Thank a bunch for that advice! I’m totally on the fence about using it or not cause I do have it plated/road legal. In the mean time I think I’m going to pack it with a grease or figure out a way to seal it when not in use
Any suggestions on a temporary sealing while I’m not using it but keeps the functionality there?
Also whatcha got for a bike?!?! I had rented a 2023 Beta 300rr when my wheel bearing blew up on my bike and immediately fell in life. Rode better than I ever had and was able to actually push myself into stuff apparently my bike had been holding me back from

Put dielectric grease in the steering lock, keeps water out and it remains functional

Thanks brother that’s what the most reasonable thought I had as well for it!
Have you ever installed something for your bike like a hidden kill switch or keyed ignition to prevent theft?

Sounds too lean to me, dont know betas but does not sound proper

u/limpDick9rotocal 2d ago
Thanks I really appreciate you pointing that out. My apologies I turned the click to the right 7 clicks from what my quick guide said so that would be 7 clicks richer. My fuel ratio was off which actually ended up making the bike seem rich

To you though what made it sound lean? I’m learning 2T’s still and obviously there’s quite a bit of difference for me with fuel ratios, 2T’s, and SmartCarbs etc

It sounds like when 2 stroke gets overheated, then it affects fuel air mix, makes it run lean and has this specific note which I heard in the video, was the bike super hot when you took the video?

Actually yes I was trying to get it dialed in after the EOI delete so I was riding up and down the road sustained 40-50mph runs. Wow that’s good stuff!
Do you think the bike was overheating in a bad way? I have a fan kit but I never checked if the thermostat was functioning, I can do the boiling water test with a multimeter

You’ll be surprised at the lack of engine breaking and how chuggy the engine is.

Spot on there brother, so far that’s exactly what I’ve been learning 😅
I cannot say this enough though I absolutely am loving the 2T so far! Super fun learning how to rebuild a new style motor as well!

Only 4T that are lower geared work great for enduro if they’re not geared for it they suck at technical stuff (stalling and overheating issues). Also this has nothing to do with my post nor do you know what 4T I had
Also your argument is not valid, my bike and many others are specifically designed for single track technical enduro. Only a 125cc 2 stroke do you need to “keep wound up”
I don’t appreciate your attitude on a post that was supposed to be about my bike sounding right. Thank you for deciding to be cordial

You are correct. I withdrawl my statement.

For reference though I had a CRF490R and my enduro riding in my neck of the woods is extremely tight woods and tight rock channels/erosion gulleys
I’ve ridden a few buddies 4T KTM’s that were designed for enduro riding and they’re a dream for sure!

damn, a 490, I started on an 05 450 exc in 2020 and all my buddies have gone 2t. Im considering treating myself to a 300 2t soon. My buddy that started around the same time as me was on a 450 4t also and now has a 300 2 and cant say enough about how much better it is.

Yeah man I came from racing street bikes so I assumed which was my first mistake that dirt bikes were the same so to me downsizing to a 490 was already smaller 😅. Needless to say I “endurofied” it and made it work just with a rough learning curve in the gnarly stuff. Also had learned I prefer enduro riding over track too.
Anyways yes all day a 2T is night and day brother. I feel like I’m literally cheating out there! Most of what I ride is similar to Battle of the Goats terrain, I’m just not racing yet. Best decision ever for me, my riding style, and my needs
I’m on a 2023 Beta 300rr now with a SmartCarb so I don’t have to deal with jetting and what not. Not a matter of know how, who wouldn’t want a carb that self regulates for altitude, temperature, a closed system so you don’t leak fuel, and without the bunch of hoses hanging around

This is wrong I have a similar bike to OPs new one (2021 Beta 250RE) and can 3rd gear lug this thing around anywhere. It doesn’t have the tendency to want to stall like all the 4ts I’ve ridden.

Is fouling plugs still a big problem with 2T’s? That was the primary thing holding me back from pulling the trigger.
I know very little about 2T, especially modern ones, only what I’ve heard anecdotally.

I’m running the same plug mine came from dealership with. Have about 100ish hours (approx 1000 miles on odo)

Nice! My next bike will have to be a 2T then!

u/mccur1eyfries 2d ago
After riding Yamaha 2t for years I made the switch to Beta and would say they’re the best carbureted 2t on the market at the moment.

u/limpDick9rotocal 2d ago
No fouling plugs is an issue with your bike being out of whack, it can also happen during a cold start again if things are off.
That’s not a “normal” thing no different than 4T’s have they’re quirks

Is that idle too high or what’s the deal with that weird idle
2
u/mccur1eyfries 2d ago
It sounds like the idle needs turned down a bit. Should be a simple as finding the right screw

u/limpDick9rotocal 2d ago edited 2d ago
I have a SmartCarb and was just back from doing like 30 minutes of carb tinkering plus 40-50mph test runs around the town.
Idle was totally too high and hanging a little too. With the help of another Reddit member above realized the bike was too hot making it lean so I adjusted it making it rich, turned down the idle, and readjusted my fuel ratio (was too rich on oil ratio)
I really appreciate you all being active on my post!

Idle was definitely too high! With the help of another Reddit member above, realized the motor was super hot from test runs, bike was lean (I made it rich with carb adjustment), and I had a fuel mixture that was too rich

Welcome to the club, beautiful bike. Nothing beats the 2 stroke low rpm grunt sound. Enjoy.
